Giuliani: Obama owns Occupy Wall Street movement

(CNN) - President Barack Obama is responsible for the start of the Occupy Wall Street movement, according to former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani.

"It would not have happened but for his class warfare," Giuliani said in Washington on Friday. "And remember, as it gets worse and worse - because it's going to get worse and worse - where it came from: Barack Obama."

Giuliani's remarks came while speaking at a summit sponsored by Americans for Prosperity, a conservative organization with deep ties to the tea party movement.

Presidential front-runners Mitt Romney and Herman Cain also spoke at the event.

Giuliani said Obama's economic philosophy–which the former mayor describes as the need to "redistribute the wealth"–closely lines up with the message of the growing movement.

The movement started out as a group of demonstrators on Wall Street upset over unemployment and the economy. It has since expanded to cover a variety of issues, including the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. Similar protests have popped up in cities around the world, some of which have been marked by violence.

One faction of the movement even proposed occupying the offices of presidential candidates in Iowa ahead of the caucuses and primary season, which starts January 3.

"I believe this will be the millstone around Barack Obama's neck that will take his presidency down," Giuliani said.

Obama commented on the booming movement in October, saying it "expresses the frustrations that the American people feel."

"People are frustrated and the protesters are giving voice to a more broad-based frustration about how our financial system works," Obama said while taking questions at a news conference about his jobs plan.

The president highlighted the financial regulation bill passed in 2010 as an example of government working to ensure a fair, rule-abiding financial sector.

"The American people understand that not everybody's been following the rules," he said. "That Wall Street is an example of that."

According to an ORC International Poll released Thursday, more Americans say they support the movement as it progresses. Thirty-six percent say they agree with the overall positions of Occupy Wall Street, up from 27% when the survey was last conducted in early October.

Giuliani flirted with a presidential bid for much of the year but announced his decision against running last month.

"Class warefare", I ask the former Gov. the same question I asked my Republican Senator and the offices of Sen. McConnel, Rep. Boehner & Rep. Cantor "Tell us exactly how has all the no votes and filibusters helped us?" I would also ask. If OWS is because of class warefare, what have Congressional Republicans done to defend us from this so called class warefare? Why have Republicans called OWS un-American, a mob instead of supporting them. His statement is rejected as GOP deflection of their accountability.

Nice try on the logic there Rudy!! There have been no tax increases (yet) under this administration. To the degree there is some class warfare aspects of this, it is because the middle class can no longer afford the life our parents had. Huge college debt, underpaying jobs, limited retirement prospects, you name it. To blame Obama is as absurd as it is ridiculous. We have problems in this country, you should be talking solutions, not blame!

If any group is responsible, it's the republican congress. Sorry to say Rudy, but again you are wrong, and when election time comes, it's a good bet that the American people, are going to remember the do nothing, party politic playing republicans. They alone are responsible for the sabotage of the economy, and no one with half a brain can deny it.

A remarkable and unprecedented thing occurred in this article. Rudy Juliani actually spoke to the press without saying the words "9-11".

Bravo, it's about time people begin to wake up and see what is happening. To Obama, the end justifies the means. Since the mid 60's the liberal progressives have been infiltrating society. Every year we send our children off to liberal colleges where they are fed a steady diet of liberal drivel at our cost. We see Obama look up to terrorists like Ayers and allow ACORN to flourish. This is real, this isn't a passing phase.

Most Occupiers, as I am one (here in Philly), aren't the biggest fans of Obama. Many of us liked Obama the community organizer, but Obama the president is down-right terrible. His policies are little different from Bush's and he revolves are corporate America. Obama doesn't give a crap about the Left. I'm not saying the guy hasn't tried doing a few small things here and there that will help Americans, but largely he is just a neo-con in a progressive suit. We aren't Obama's puppets! We never will be. We aren't like those Tea Baggers who bow down at the feet of Sarah Palin.

I am one of the 99 percent! The OWS protesters backed by Union thugs DO NOT SPEAK for me!!! Stop representing the fact that 99 percent of Americans are in your corner! The US is clearly divided. One half of American adults pay no taxes! Obama clearly strives to divide the Country by social class. At the end of the day, it's all about power and votes. Simple Question... How many successful people live on food stamps and free government housing? Why have generations of Black Families remained poor? Answer: Democrats keeping them under their thumb to maintain votes! I for one prefer the freedom to work hard and prosper vs. Obama's handouts and hidden chains!!!

Well, by Rudy's logic, he, as Mayor of New York, owned 911. Why didn't he nailed terrorists when he was mayor? Was he responsible for these people died in the twin tower. Rudy, when you say something, think. Your credibility dropped like fall leaves

Occupy wall street comes from the GOP stealing from the poor and giving it to the rich, let's be real Clown!

    November 5, 2011 09:14 pm at 9:14 pm |

And Mr. a noun, a verb and 911 owns nothing! He'll stay with the standard GOP talking points all the way as they drive off the cliff.

The only way to send wall street a message is to hit them where it hurts them most, their pocketbook
If the protesters and everyone who agrees with them refuses to go to the stores and spend like they are expecting us to during november and december we can make a statement that will heard in every boardroom in the country.
If this year we buy only basic needs we can shake up the top 1% in a way that demonstrations can never do.

  19. GOP = Greed Over People

So to recap, my choice of evil can be heartless "christian" GOP teabaggers that want to cut funds to starve poor children OR OWS that wants to take.7 tenths of one percent from the rich after they were rewarded by the "trickle down" mantra from the GOP which will be used to keep feed the poor children?

I will stand in the "footsteps of Jesus" on Wall Street, since that is simply the 21st century version of the temple being desecrated by the money changers!

You GOP "christians" keep your schekels for now...

Giuliani has now lost all connection with real life and real America.
He should take a basic course in sociology and learn something about income and asset inequality.
He is a ridiculous, embarrassing, irrelevant old man.

From the other side of planet, I tell you for a fact we put you Mr Giuliani and Mr Obama in the same boat. For too long our government has followed the dictates your's has set. Obama, Bush, Clinton all have encouraged "free markets" for our imports while maintaining massive tarrifs on us. Now you're finding out you can't force the same blatant hypocrisy on your own people anymore. Good on OWS for demanding their democracy back it's about bloody time.
