Friend of Cain accuser recounts allegations

(CNN) - A longtime friend of one of Herman Cain's unnamed accusers tells CNN that Cain dangled a job promotion in front of the accuser at the same time he "made her very uncomfortable" with sexual "innuendo and overtures."

This woman told CNN she spoke extensively with her friend about Cain's conduct in 1998 at the time the accuser was allegedly being harassed by Cain while they both worked at the National Restaurant Association.

Cain has vehemently denied committing sexual harassment while he headed the association.

The friend tells CNN the accuser would sometimes "come home in tears, and it would all come pouring out how upset she was."

The friend, who recounted her conversations with the accuser during a telephone interview with CNN on Tuesday, asked that her name not be used because the accuser has decided not to come forward publicly and revealing her name could help identity the accuser.

According to the friend, the accuser worked in government relations for the restaurant association at the time of the incidents. Her friend described it as "well-known" in 1998 that Cain behaved badly. This friend recalls that the accuser only got up the nerve to talk to superiors about Cain after someone else had.

"When one started complaining, it helped the others," this woman says. "There definitely was somebody else [who had experienced the same behavior], and it led her to speak up."

At one point, the friend recounts, "They [association members] went to a conference in Chicago and I remember her coming back and mentioning some things that he had said, along with the innuendo of job promotion." In the end, the friend adds, the woman did not get the promotion. "I think she was up for something and didn't get it," she said, adding that her friend worried it was because she had rebuffed Cain.

Eventually, the Cain accuser went to her bosses and explained what was going on, the friend said.

"She didn't want to leave her job," her friend recalls. "They gave her options. They offered her money. She didn't ask for money. It seems like the Restaurant Association was saying, 'Let's get control of this.' "

Ultimately, the friend said, the accuser accepted a settlement offer from the National Restaurant Association and left her job.

I agree with Dean that Obama is an idiot; but I also believe Cain harrassed these women. When 4 woman claim the same behavior, they don't know eachother and settlements were paid; something happened. Romeny 2012!

We need to see the details of that, to evaluate whether the accusations can withstand scrutiny or not.

It is my understanding, the person who settled with the NRA, did not file her complaint until a month after Cain left......which raises serious questions about the accusations. That simply isn't consistent with filing complaints.

Don't knock those of us with a GED. After all, I went to high school in Az. I could get the GED in a matter of an afternoon or stay in public school with the parolees and drug dealers. Brewer was our Sec. of Education then.

Give me a break, the typical libs are at it again. They will stop at nothing to stay in power. They are pathetic. The only reason the lifer politictions are fabricating this stuff is because they are bought by union minions and the such..

I recall when the accusers came out against Clinton and the right called him GUILTY as soon as they heard it. Of course in some cases he WAS guilty but these same folks are running to the defense of Herman Cain. It just proves to me that the right protects the right, the left protects the left and they both blame and point fingers at each other when this kind of stuff comes up. Bottom line is SOMEBODY is lying.

Wire (great business card, BTW), since when do rightwingers bother reading an article before furiously jerking that knee?

Case in point: Kenneth the VI of Minneapolis "So, it appears that this person discussed the case with a third party in violation of the terms of the payment. She also went to the newspapers. This is out of control.....someone will be sued.
    November 8, 2011 01:58 pm at 1:58 pm"

The article clearly states she discussed this with her friend at the time Cain was using his position to try to have sex with her, when she was trying to decide how to deal with the problem, not after she decided she couldn't comfortably work there anymore and accepted the settlement.

For all the people not able to make the connection to Obama, The lady who made the allegations was from chicago and was connected to Axlerod a close aid of obama who dropped charges against her in september 2011. She had 2 bankruptcies, 13 jobs since 1990 with the longest job for 3 years. She had a paternal lawsuit against her in 2001. Now she comes out at the time Mr. Cain is leading in polls. And for cnn who analyzed cains reaction to allegations using micro expressions, do the same to her video and you will find she is blatantly lying. I am an independent and not a fan of republicans or cain, but the way he is targeted is not fair.

No one brings up the possibility that Cain himself has started these stories and that ultimately he will survive by proving the allegations false and there by strengthening his candidacy. Something to consider.

The bimbo and the trash shark. As the saying goes "birds of a feather flock together." This white trash bimbo will do anything to make a buck with allegations that suposedly took place 14 years ago. These shameless women have no decency at all.

Once is a happenstance, twice is a coincidence, thrice is a habit.

What does that make the fourth? One he could claim as false, but at what point do we just accept that maybe there's a problem here? Either way, methinks he's done for. Not that he started particularly strong, but still.

Please ignore Dean, and all of his aliases as well! And, sad, to say, there's more than one of him/her. (Must be a paid group of them.) By now, you should know who they are by the pathetic, say-nothing one liners against Obama.

Cain is saying "I didn't do it" and the accusers are being verified by witnesses. I'm not sure how it works in Cainland, Home of the Koch machine, but in America the side with the witnesses generally wins out.

    Just saying.

This just keeps getting better and better. Herman's not afraid of losing the nomination. He knew going in that it was impossible. Now, he's more afraid of losing book sales. Fox News won't give a damn about this scandal. It gives him more street cred with the tGOP.

    @Kenneth the VI of Minneapolis
According to the article, the friend who says she was harrassed by Cain talked to her friend who is quoted for this article WHEN THE HARRASSING WAS ONGOING. The article ends with "she accepted a settlement and left the job." Any confidentiality agreement would then apply AFTER signing.... not to conversations that occured BEFORE signing.....

Mr. Cain needs to go home, and run his business, there in no where in the world, he needs to be in a public office, and maybe not in a private office, if he is guilty, of what he is being accused of........

All of these women can't be lying.......If it were just one woman accusing him, then I might give Mr. Cain the benefit of the doubt, but too many women have come forward, with this.........So he needs to step up, and tell the truth.
If the tea party baggers, put this man in the most important office, in the world, then we are lost............all I can say is, I will be voting for President Obama.......for the second time around..........peace out.

  25. Joe from CT, not Lieberman

I don't like Cain very much, but it amazes me that none of these allegations started to surface until after he supplanted Perry and Romney in the polls. As the one candidate that President Obama does NOT want to face is Mitt Romney, I cannot see the democrats doing anything that would tank the chances of a potentially weaker candidate from winning the Republican nomination. This smear unfortunately has the Karl Rove touch all over it. I find it especially amusing that all of a sudden, that publicity hound Gloria Allred found the time to get involved when there is obviously more money to be made with the Kim Kardashian divorce! Someone must be paying her big time for this one.
