Washington (CNNMoney) - A Senate panel passed a bipartisan deal to save the U.S. Postal Service.
The Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee voted 9-to-1 to pass the deal, which buys out some employees, cuts worker compensation benefits for some retirees and maintains Saturday mail service for two more years.

That sounds like kicking the can down the road. The real issue, is that the PO does not cover the cost of bulk mail, by the fees charged, and until they do that, they will continue to lose money.
Rick, we all know you and facts are like oil and water, but the post office has been generating a profit for awhile now. The reason they were facing extinction is because the right-wing wanted the post office to put aside billions of dollars toward paying pensions deep into the future, thus breaking them and robbing them of any profit, a totally unrealistic feat to place on any company.
Why not just reverse the law that requires the post office to pay benefits 10 years in advance?
Close down the post office and put mail delivery into the private sector otherwise it will always be an albatross around the taxpayer's neck.
the money will disappear just like the social security money if the republicans get their hands on it
Sandy: because the rep will never let it go through a filibuster. They want to privatize it so it will cost us more and service will suffer.
Are u sure the Senate passed something? Say it's not so!
Privatize the Post Office. Fools never learn do they. The fact of the matter is the P.O. have been working just fine. Salaries is not the issue....Internet and the special taxes the P.O pays to our government each year is taking a toll.
Steve: They should at least propose reversing the law. That will be another strike against republicans for putting forth this law that cripples the post office. I never even knew about this law that required that huge payment until a few months ago. My guess is that most people don't know the cause of the the post office's troubles.
saturday mail needs to be drop now....
The government will do anything to protect the US MAIL leaders of mail is same as government gave a price hike for mail because they were in trouble same day price went up post master general got 39% pay raise so much for postal help in gas retirement and so on
