Blame exchanged over Cain missing meeting with paper

Nashua, New Hampshire (CNN) - Days after the release of a video showing GOP presidential candidate Herman Cain stumbling over a foreign policy question while meeting with a Milwaukee newspaper editorial board, Cain again found himself at the center of controversy - this time with a New Hampshire newspaper.

Both Cain and the influential New Hampshire Union Leader pointed fingers at each other Thursday after Cain did not attend a scheduled meeting with the paper's publisher and other journalists.

Perry says 'privileged' Obama can't relate

(CNN) – Texas Gov. Rick Perry backed up his "pathetic" criticism of President Obama late Thursday, saying the incumbent's thinking is based on his background.

"He grew up in a privileged way," Perry said while explaining his ad attack that decries President Obama's description of America as being "a little bit lazy over the last couple of decades."

Santorum: Republicans 'ignore some realities' on economy

Coralville, Iowa (CNN) - Republican presidential candidate Rick Santorum, one of the more conservative White House contenders in the race, told a crowd of Iowans on Thursday that he is "not a big fan" of the Occupy Movement that began on Wall Street two months ago to send a message to the country about income inequality.

But Santorum says they have a point.

Cain: How do you say that in 'Cuban?'

(CNN) - While campaigning in Miami on Wednesday, Republican presidential candidate Herman Cain, who's taken heat over his knowledge of foreign policy, dodged questions on issues related to Cuba.

Asked by a reporter if he supported the "wet-foot, dry-foot policy," which allows Cuban immigrants to stay in the United States once they get in, Cain responded: "Wet-foot, dry-foot policy?"

BORGER: When are GOP candidates going to take on Herman Cain?

Editor's note: Gloria Borger is CNN's chief political analyst, appearing regularly on shows such as "AC360," "The Situation Room," "John King USA" and "State of the Union."

Washington (CNN) - It's hard to remember a presidential candidate who seemed more, er, unacquainted with the national dialogue - or presidential prerequisites - than Herman Cain.

At first, he seemed a likable enough fellow. With exactly one idea: a 9-9-9 tax system. Not a truly GOP-minted plan, since it includes a national sales tax, which Republicans loathe. But never mind. He was genial and a welcome addition to those early debates in which some of his fellow contenders seemed so humorless, angry and, in some cases, downright unfriendly.

Debt committee: Market reaction a big unknown

NEW YORK (CNNMoney) - Given how volatile markets have become, predicting how traders will react to the congressional debt committee next week is a dicey undertaking.

Two themes emerged in conversations with stock and bond strategists. First, Wall Street never expected much from the committee, thanks to the disastrous debt ceiling debate. Second, markets don't expect lawmakers to make meaningful decisions on fiscal reform until after the 2012 election.

Deficit talks shift toward blame game

Washington (CNN) - Six days before the deadline for a deal, House leaders on Thursday blamed each other's party for the inability of a special congressional committee to reach agreement on tax and entitlement reforms as part of a possible deficit reduction agreement.

The comments at successive news conferences by House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio, and Democratic leader Rep. Nancy Pelosi of California escalated the rhetoric over possible failure by the committee created as part of the debt ceiling agreement earlier this year
