Des Moines, Iowa (CNN) - Mitt Romney's campaign has opened its first 2012 presidential campaign headquarters in Iowa.
Dave Kochel, the top strategist in the state for the Republican presidential candidate, said the office opened last week in Des Moines.
"We moved into a little bit bigger space several days ago," Kochel said. He explained that the new office is between 3,000 to 4,000 square feet with a street entrance.
Staffers quietly opened the space with virtually no fanfare.
"It's not an earth-shattering thing. We were kind of cramped in one room of my little office in town," Kochel said, referring to himself and the four other Romney Iowa staffers working in his consulting office.
Yet the office opening is significant. It suggests the former Massachusetts governor may ramp up his campaign activities in the Hawkeye state. He's only visited the state a handful of times in the current presidential cycle, far less than some of his rivals.
Kochel downplayed the office's significance.
"It suggests that the caucuses are getting a little closer. We have more volunteer activity than we did a couple of months ago."

He doesn't want to lose Iowa again like he did 4 years ago. I can't blame him.. The problem Romney has is that he isn't getting lots of people. He only has his core. Many conservatives still don't trust him. They are waivering on everyone else at this point.
Can he be crazy enough for Iowa? Sure. He changes with the wind direction – the ultimate flip-flopper.
too little, too late
