(CNN) - President Barack Obama on Wednesday challenged Republicans to "fight as hard for middle-class families as you do for those who are more fortunate," telling a Pennsylvania crowd to push Congress to extend the payroll tax cut enacted a year ago.
Obama met with a family in Scranton, the birthplace of Vice President Joe Biden, then spoke at a nearby high school in what will be a battleground state in next year's presidential election.

Thursday the House of Representatives will vote on a resolution to memorialize the aide to Arizona Rep. Gabby Giffords by naming a meeting room in the Capitol complex after him.
The thirty-year-old aide was slain in January after alleged gunman Jared Loughner opened fire on a "Congress on your Corner" event at a Tucson grocery store where constituents gathered to meet with Giffords.

Greenville, South Carolina (CNN) – Republican presidential candidate Newt Gingrich defended his professional record and embraced being labeled a "lifelong politician" by frontrunner rival Mitt Romney Wednesday.

Concord, New Hampshire (CNN) - The New Hampshire house of representatives failed Wednesday to override a veto of right-to-work legislation that has drawn the passing support of several GOP presidential candidates.
Supporters could not muster enough votes to block the state's Democratic governor's veto of the bill, which would prevent unions from collecting dues from non-members.
