What does ‘suspending’ mean?

(CNN) –- With news Saturday that Herman Cain is suspending his bid for the 2012 GOP nomination, many are wondering what the move means for his future.

Federal law doesn’t have a specific definition for “suspending” a political campaign, meaning Cain is still legally considered a candidate.

Because he did not officially drop out of the race, Cain will still be allowed to raise and spend campaign funds as if he were still seeking the nomination.

If he had told supporters Saturday he was ending his bid for the White House, Cain would have been permitted only to raise funds to retire debts accrued on the campaign trail.

Cain will still be required to file financial disclosure reports with the Federal Election Commission at the end of each fund-raising quarter.

–CNN Political Research Director Robert Yoon contributed to this report.

    Two questions:
    1. Does he still get Secret Service protection ?
    2. Can he withdraw his suspension anytime before the convention if he sees a window of opportunity?

It also means that Cain can still barter himself (and his supporters) to any of the other candidates.
That is why, we suddenly heard New, Bachman, and others claiming how much Cain has contributed to Conservatives causes.

They kept mentioning the 999 plan.... ugh!

It means he is not adult enough to won up to his own lies and mistakes. He thinks by laying low he can come back to an appointment in a GOP run congress.

As with all but one of the Republican.Tea Party candidates, they glitter a bit when we know nothing about them. From then on, the more they talk and the more we learn, they're revealed as the unqualified clowns that they are. Romney is their only reasonable candidate, and they don't trust him. And the irony is that they should not trust him because as a President he would, indeed, turn his back on the simple-minded Tea Party types. Which, unless he pulls a stunt as stupid as did McCain by trying to run with, say Bachmann, makes him a Republican indepents might well vote for.

So we now have the answer. He is now a political PT Barnum, separating money from the gullible while he heads to the egress.

By not officially dropping out he is still permitted to raise funds to retire debts. A smart move. Herman Cain also provided a tremendous service to the GOP by being the first to offer up his vision for America (his 9-9-9 plan) for the entire political and media world to attack or embrace. By doing so, he provided much needed cover and time for the other candidates to restructure their own plans so as to keep away from those areas that were shown to be at risk or rejected. Because, what would their plans call for that President Obama hasn't already tried or attempted? No one wanted to be first. Always easier to tear someone else down than to set forth and defend your own plan. For this our nation and the remaining GOP candidates owe Herman Cain a great deal of thanks. He got them off the dime, for a while at least.

CNN update on "suspending" failed to note that Cain can still claim federal matching funds. This can be considerable. Would help if CNN "Political Unit" would try to note such effects. Follow the money trail!!

Suspending his campaign means he wants to have his cake and eat it too, i.e. try to trick others into thinking he is done so the pressure will come off while staying in the game. Just more arrogance from this numbskull

Herman is so arrogant he thinks people will demand he come back and run. Truth is the Republican Party is thrilled to be rid of this egomaniac xexual predator and serial adulterer. He knows nothing about keadership. Knows nothing about economics, Amercan history, how our government works, or even what the President does. All he knows is how great he thinks he is and that all women would want him, His wife can't be stupid enough to beleve his lies, Run away Gloria!

It's just as wishywashy as everything the man said. It's a shame for comedians though, he was a real jokester.

It means that if someone suspends their campaign there is probably an underlying reason. Hint: It's not because he's "hurt."

So donating to his book tour is still legally a tax deductible campaign contribution and he can still pocket any funds remaining when he officially withdraws or after the Republican convention. Sounds like a business man to me.

'Suspend' is a way to say 'I quit' without actually saying it.

"SUSPENDS" is code for I am really a damn buffoon hoping that I can hoodwink and rap my way offstage without appearing to have-my-tail-between-my-legs. Agree? If you don't agree ask yourself or anyone else where is Ross Perot? Not quite sure who sponsored Mr. Cain but it is obvious now that they didn't pick the right horse and they really didn't give a damn about Mr. Cain, family, loved ones, mistresses, or the lives impacted by his fall from grace. Truly none of you out there really ever thought this guy could be POTUS. I mean, come on??? And NO it is not about skin color nor "plantation"class, as Mr. Cain calls it, nor tea party, Sarah Palin nor Ms Bachman. I am mortified that this is the pool of candidates that we have to select from. People need to wake up.....

"Suspend" means Herb can continue to milk his supporters for more money, so he can continue to fund his extramarital affairs.
