Voters back Gingrich, but say there's a 'chance' for Romney

(CNN) - Another day, another poll showing former House Speaker Newt Gingrich ahead of his closest rival, former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney.

The survey, released Tuesday from the Pew Research Center, shows Gingrich leading Romney 35%-21% among Republican or likely Republican voters nationwide. The poll was taken Dec. 7-11.

The poll does contain glimmers of hope for Romney, however. Forty percent of voters surveyed said there was a "chance" they would support him at the polls, while 35% said there was a chance they'd go for Gingrich.

Higher numbers of voters said there was "no chance" they'd vote for other candidates in the race, including Texas Gov. Rick Perry and Texas Rep. Ron Paul.

Romney also saw higher rates of support among women, though he still trailed Gingrich percentage-wise. Twenty-nine percent of Republican or Republican-leaning women backed Gingrich, and 22% supported Romney. That's compared to 40% of Republican men who chose Gingrich and 19% who named Romney.

Voters displayed lukewarm support for both candidates, with majorities saying they supported Gingrich or Romney "only moderately," compared to supporting the candidates "strongly."

Among voters who said they agree with the tea party movement, 35% back Gingrich and 20% back Romney. The next closest candidate was Minnesota Rep. Michele Bachmann, who had backing from 10% of respondents.

In electability ratings, Gingrich also fared well. Thirty-five percent of Republican voters said the former House speaker had the best chance of defeating Pres. Barack Obama in a general election, while 29% said Romney's odds were best. No other candidate rose above 2% in this metric.

The Pew Research Center poll was taken by phone from 504 Republican or likely Republican voters across the United States. The sampling error was plus or minus 5.5 percentage points.

Whether it's Romney or GIngrich, the American people will rally behind them to help save this country from Obama and his merry band of socialists/"progressives"/commies. Four more years of the Obama nightmare and we'll ALL be unemployed and on food stamps.

Don't forget, "There is always room for jello." Jello is what best describes the elitist rich brat, Mittens, at this point.

wow, this is shameful ambiguous non-article
504 repub or likely repub voters apparently have failed to catch up to the rest of us here in 2011
thanks for nothing cnn, yet again – the revolution will not be televised indeed, but the more discerning of your viewers know this already
so keep up whatever it is you're paid to do, the rest of us have a country to save

If we use Rasmussen polling techniques, Mittens has a disapproval rating of negative 58 amongst only republicans. (21 – 79)

GOP hates anything that has to do with our not-for-profit government. Electing GOP to any govt position would be like putting a rapist in charge of Planned Parenthood.

The American people know the GOP only cares about the rich...except for the sheep who habitually follow fox & rushball.

Democrats answer to everything, TAX THE RICH, TAX BUSINESS, no, they won't rally behind Mittens or the Grinch because they bring no compelling reason as to why they should be president. I mean, really, a 1-term governor who opted not to run for re-eelection because his approval ratings would not crack 40% and who runs from his signature accomplishment to please the foaming mob that runs his party, and a moral trainwreck who's own lieutenants won't endorse him for the presidency because he could not manage his caucus. Newt was an undisciplined disaster who was " a crisis a day, and usually of his own making", according to Rep. Peter King. If this is the best the GOP can manage, than Obama will win a cakewalk, taking the House and holding the Senate. Your lot can't legislate it's way out of a wet paper bag, they are so incompetant.

I find it very disheartening the CNN interviewers are not taking their GOP guess to task on these issues. Especially Wolf, all he says We have breaking news and repeats the same questions over and over also he follow up with reverent comment concerning these questions

Obama is going to be walking the same walk nearly 70 Democrats in the House walked in the 2010 elections... a walk right out the door and back to his corrupt Chicago.

BTW, PLENTY of bills being passed in the Republican House. How many bills is the Democrat Senate debating, considering, or doing ANYTHING with??? Harry Reid has shown America who the REAL obstructionist is. HIM. But of course he's only shielding the dolt in the Whitehouse from himself. He probably doesn't have time to sign anything with all those vacations, golf ouitings and campaign fund raisers with millionaires.

EXACTLY. In the past the posts have been nothing more than vapid trash. Calling this dimwit a monkey's behind would be a slight to all monkeys.

But I do love the fact that the witless righhtwing primary voters now treasure someone who they know is running around with a political grenade in his belly. When will it go off? As Pelosi pointed out a week or so ago, if Newt's [R] opponents don't have the brains to pull the pin, the [D]s surely do.

A word to the wise, Governor Romney, on the very unlikely chance this comment ever gets back to you When a Vietnam veteran asks you a question, (even if that question concerns gay marriage), you be sure to thank that veteran for his service to our country, which I never saw you do in the video!

    Ooops....CNN also misses the news:

    Public Policy Polling in Iowa:

    Newt Gingrich 22%
    Ron Paul 21%
    Mitt Romney 16%
    Michele Bachmann 11%
    Rick Perry 9%
    Rick Santorum 8%
    Jon Huntsman 5%
    Gary Johnson 1%

Ron Paul will soon pass Newt in Iowa. Maybe CNN will start writing about him when he does?

If the Kochs and big oil cannot buy this election, what will the right wingers on the supreme court do, name the president? Oh yes, that worked so well when they did that in 2000.

Neither will win because Gingrich is too strong (nasty) and Romney is too weak (spineless). Both equal win for Obama.

    @Sandy and @John,

Just another worthless post from someone who obviously has problems. What can you say, except that I hope he keeps posting, because it reminds all the moderates (both liberal and conservative) just how wacky the far right is. He can only push people toward supporting the President in the end.
