Direct vote on short-term payroll extension likely to be scrapped
(CNN) - House GOP sources tell CNN they are now likely to scrap a planned vote to directly defeat a bill to extend the payroll tax for two months, and vote instead to simply instruct House negotiators to back a year long extension.
The expected change, which developed after a two hour meeting of House Republicans, appears to reflect how wary House Republicans are of casting a vote that could be seen as a tax increase.
One House GOP leadership aide conceded to CNN that it is a "cleaner message" to simply vote to affirm the House position on extending the payroll tax cut for a year, instead of opposing a two-month extension.
Another GOP aide said they now believe it makes more sense for them to have an "affirmative vote" instead of a "negative one."
House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi told reporters Democrats on the Rules Committee told her there would not be a vote on the Senate bill.
She said, "My guess is that they are afraid that their members are not going to stick with them."

I hope the voters are paying attention to the awful job the tea party gop controlled House is doing. They do not deserve the power they are abusing. they are the ones who should be "scrapped"and not the bill.

I would really like direct voting on all laws and just skip the waste of time on Representatives who don't represent me. They represent party, big money, lobbies, but not me. Think of all the money the USA could save by getting rid of politicians.
The GOP quick to give tax break to the rich , but not us the working class. There toast come election time!!
I guess that they don't want to keep the payroll tax cut. If they were to do this (approve it), it would be a win for Obama in their eyes.

This is just a riot. The GOP doesn"t know come here, from sickum. No tax increase on the rich, but lets increase it on the rest of the country. They argue that it is not an increase, but the old tax cut just expired. Isn't that what happened to the tax break for the rich? It just expired. Time for it and the GOP to expire.

Good. Scrap the payroll reduction. Leave Social Security alone. It is already an extremely progressive taxation system. Funding it with general tax collections will make it even more so. The Democrats want to turn it into a Welfare system with their plans to means test Social Security benefits.
