Gingrich grabs backing from influential Iowa radio talk show host

Des Moines, Iowa (CNN) - A popular social conservative radio talk show host whose program is heard statewide in Iowa is backing Newt Gingrich for president.

Steve Deace's endorsement comes four days before the Hawkeye State's January 3 caucuses, which kick off the Republican presidential primary and caucus calendar.

Paul to hit the airwaves in South Carolina

(CNN) - Ron Paul's campaign expanded an ad buy Friday, taking spots already released in New Hampshire and Iowa and airing them in South Carolina, a state that holds the nation's first-in-the-South primary.

The commercials tout the Texas congressman's anti-abortion credentials and record on veterans' issues.

Ohio congressman will not seek another term

(CNN) - Following a redistricting battle in Ohio, Republican Rep. Steve Austria announced Friday he will not run for re-election in 2012.

The two-term congressman cited the state's new redistricting map for his departure, expressing disappointment over the Ohio legislature's move to divvy up the 7th Congressional District and merge it with three different districts.

One Gingrich supporter steadfast despite polls

(CNN) - When business owner Brad Utter got a phone call two weeks ago asking him to host an event for Newt Gingrich, he immediately said yes and started recruiting people to attend the event the next Monday in Davenport.

At the time, Utter was leaning towards supporting Gingrich and is now planning on voting for him at Tuesday's caucuses.

Matt Romney backs off birth certificate quip

(CNN) – Mitt Romney's second-oldest son, Matt, made his first foray into the Twitterverse Friday with a mea culpa for tying the release of his father's tax returns to President Barack Obama's birth certificate.

Thursday Matt Romney responded to a question at a Concord, New Hampshire event about whether his father would release federal tax returns.

Pro-Huntsman super PAC calls Romney a 'chameleon'

Cedar Rapids, Iowa (CNN) - A super PAC supportive of Jon Huntsman is scheduled Tuesday to go up with a new television ad in New Hampshire calling front-runner Mitt Romney a "chameleon."

A source from Our Destiny PAC said the committee had put more than $300,000 into the ad buy in the run-up to New Hampshire's Jan. 10 primary.

NH paper rips Paul and his supporters

(CNN) - New Hampshire's most influential newspaper took the knives out for Ron Paul Friday, calling the GOP hopeful "dangerous" and labeling his supporters the "lunatic fringe."

Joseph McQuaid, publisher of the Union Leader, lamented that reporters more interested in chasing the latest political developments have largely ignored Paul's views on foreign policy.

(CNN) - Ron Paul will hit the trail in Iowa on Monday with his son, Republican Sen. Rand Paul of Kentucky, to make a final pitch to caucus goers in the Hawkeye State.

The father-son duo will embark on a whistle-stop tour, visiting five counties one day before the nation's first Republican nominating contest on Tuesday.

Gingrich tears up remembering his mother

Des Moines, Iowa (CNN) - Newt Gingrich teared up at a campaign stop in Iowa Friday, openly weeping while talking about his mother, who suffered from bipolar disorder and depression.

The moment was sparked by a question from GOP political consultant Frank Luntz, who was moderating a forum targeted to mothers at a local coffee shop Java Joe's in downtown Des Moines.
