(CNN) - Republican presidential hopeful Rick Santorum raised more than $1 million since finishing second in Tuesday night's Iowa caucuses, a source close to the campaign said.
Former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney edged out Santorum by only eight votes on Tuesday in the closest ever GOP presidential contest.

In the week before the caucuses, Santorum's campaign raised more money than in the past six months of online fundraising, a senior Santorum adviser told CNN.
The new-found cash helped the campaign air advertising in the days before Iowa's contest, and presumably would support buys in New Hampshire, which votes Tuesday, and in South Carolina, which votes later in January.
The campaign also has seven staff members in New Hampshire and said dozens of out-of-state supporters were paying their own way to New Hampshire for the final push.
Third quarter financial disclosures show that Santorum raised $704,199 in the three-month period ending with September. The campaign reported about $70,000 in debt and spent $743,757 in the same period.
CNN's Rachel Streitfeld and Kevin Liptak contributed to this report.

That's great! There is still a 75% majority of Republicans who do not want Romney. Maybe Santorum can launch a credible charge if he can get over his fear of discussing economic issues and his limited knowledge of foreign policy. Has anyone heard Santorum discuss anything besides Israel or Iran? Does anyone recall Santorum's false start of an economic plan that he had named "0-0-0"? He claims he wasn't going to charge the wealthy any taxes.
He will need about 10 more days like that to run with the big dogs Mitt and Rick.
Santorum raises 1 million dollars, then mistakenly thinks he can keep the money for himself.
1 million is a lot of froth!
Bright lights and big city...going to Santorum's head!!
Didn't Ron Paul raised 5x this amount in a single day a few weeks ago? Where was the CNN coverage for RP?
Suddenly the GOP runs out of non-Rmoneys for the front of their clown car and then they take one more look under the rock.....and loe and behold there way in the backward – it's Satanorum!
One more religiously radical smooth-brain to hoist up for the teeth-gnashing frothing at the mouth GOP base.
Anyone care to guess how this works out? How pittiful can the GOP get?
Yet they fail to mention that Ron Paul has raised more than $1 million in one day multiple times. Way to go MSM.
You against the republican establishment. LOL. Good luck.
When you cannot even hold your own Senate seat in your own state ,with your own party ,how do you expect to even drean you have a chance on a national ticket. If you really believe that that your fantasy world will soon blow up in New Hampshire ,South Carolina and Florida.
Romney has corporations and wall street execs funding his super-PACs. The only one that can match that is PRESDENT BARACK OBAMA.
Obama/Biden 2012 Elizabeth Warren 2016
Santorum will hit the wall when he enters the states with voters who expect more than Bible-thumping and radical positions on hot-button issues. This guy is packaged to appeal to the Tea Party radicals – like all of the clown car full of candidates the Republicans offer.
God save us from extremists like you, Rick! This Catholic mom is voting for OBAMA!
Typical... Won't pay taxes, but WILL throw a ton of cash away supporting this unelectable clown...
This isn't news, Ron Paul raises more than this in a single day several times just this year.
He raised a million over night? Who were the donors, the Taliban? Their belief system and ideology seems to be similar to santorums.
A WHOLE MILLION!?!?!?!?
Haha, amatuer...not to mention they are all max donations from a handful of bundlers seeking influence.
