(CNN) - The Republican National Committee announced Thursday it raised $27 million in the fourth quarter of 2011, $3 million more than its Democratic counterpart.
The Democratic National Committee announced earlier Thursday it pulled in $24 million in the last three months of the year, and also heralded fundraising from President Barack Obama's reelection effort. The Obama campaign took in $42 million in the fourth quarter.

Columbia, South Carolina (CNN) - The chairman of the South Carolina Republican Party came to Mitt Romney's defense on Thursday after Romney's corporate past came under fire from two of his rivals in the GOP presidential race.
"I would like to see this all shake out where Republicans stick by Republican ideals," state party chairman Chad Connelly told CNN. "I am a big proponent of the free market even though it's harsh sometimes. Nobody likes to lose jobs."

(CNN) - GOP presidential frontrunner Mitt Romney on Thursday aggressively defended his tenure as head of Bain Capital, asserting again that his private-equity career resulted in the net creation of over 100,000 jobs while also calling any job losses an unfortunate fact of life in the private sector.

(CNN) – President Obama formally asked Congress Thursday to raise the nation’s debt ceiling, stating the country’s debts have fallen within $100 billion of the current debt limit and an increase is needed to meet “existing commitments.”
The request came Thursday in a letter from the president to House Speaker John Boehner.
