(CNN) - Newt Gingrich's campaign admitted Wednesday night the former House speaker was inaccurate when he claimed his team offered several witnesses to ABC News to refute statements made by Gingrich's second wife in a controversial interview aired last week.
CNN Chief National Correspondent John King reported the campaign said it only recommended Gingrich's two daughters from his first marriage, who wrote a letter discouraging ABC to release the interview.

Marianne Gingrich claimed in the ABC interview that her husband asked for an open marriage while he was having an extramarital affair with his current wife, Callista Gingrich.
"The story was false. Every personal friend I have who knew us in that period says the story is false. We offered several of them to ABC to prove it was false. They weren't interested," Gingrich said at a CNN debate last week.
In an interview on Tuesday, King pressed Gingrich on those claims, saying ABC News insisted no such witnesses were put forward.
Gingrich said ABC's defense was "just plain baloney."
"If they're saying that, then they're not being honest," Gingrich said. "We had several people prepared to be very clear and very aggressive in their dispute about that, and (ABC News) wasn't interested."
On Wednesday, however, the campaign conceded the candidate was wrong, both in his debate answer and in his interview with CNN on Tuesday.
R.C. Hammond, the campaign's press secretary, told CNN the only people the campaign offered to ABC were the speaker's two daughters, Jackie Cushman and Kathy Gingrich Lubbers, who make regular appearances for their father on the campaign trail.

The Newt lied to his wife for SIX years before she caught him. He's good!
And, are we surprised? Humm.... from this guy? I think not.
This single situation involved a dramatic web of lies, not just one "oops, our candidate made an error". He's said: 1) my ex-wife lied. 2) every personal friend I had at that time says she lied, 3) I've offered people to ABC who will refute her statement, and 4) ABC wasn't interested in talking to such people. My God, what an expert liar he is. No wonder the GOP runs the other way from him. I'm sure we'll see people bailing from his campaign very soon,
Newt used his daughters from his first wife, whom he ask for a divorce while she lay in the hospital with cancer, to convince everyone that his second wife, whom he was cheating on with his first wife, was lying about his third wife, whom he was cheating with on his second wife. You got to admit the SOB has chutspah.
As the Bible says, a man's marriage to a woman who is not a virgin is without founding. They should ask Santorum and Gingrich if their first wives were virgins when they married and how soon are they going to divorce them to get their lives in line with the Bible. Newt should also be asked about gluttony.
First lie. Then, when caught, lie again and aggressively blame the "liberal media", and then when they present proof, quietly concede a mistake four days later. I can't believe there are people willing to vote for this guy.
Gingrich lied? Unheard of! I mean it's not like it's been proven already that a staggering 86% of his answers are either half lies or full lies.. More leaning to them being 100% blatant lies usually. the man is a habitual liar, a cheater and a lobbyist for Fanny Mae and Freddy Mac.
He's as much of a POS as there could possibly be. If you ever wanted to know whats wrong withn America, look at Gingrich, he embodies EVERYTHING that is wrong with this country. Pieces of Shi! like him, who rapes us citizens, every single chance they get. Nice bonus that he ends up a millionaire for it, while thousands get tossed out into the street? That is NOT what a president should be. Gingrich is garbage..
Wait a minute!
Do you mean to tell me that a politician was dishonest?
No way!
To tell such a bold lie to the American people with such seeming conviction smacks of someone who is not only profoundly dishonest by nature, but who uses dishonestly as a way to win arguments.
i guess newts asking god for forgivness does not include being a seriaL liar. he is not to be trusted, why is the gop offering him up as the president of the united states? what are they thinking. it is a good thing newt is godless, he has to know lying about coming over to god is a deal killer for someone who TRULY believes
"Rudy NYC
The first amendment gives the right to tell outright half-truths and lies. Remember that."
No, it doesn't and folks can be held liable for the lies and half-truths that they tell.
Democrats for a Gingrich-Romney ticket! Or a Romney-Gingrich ticket! It doesn't matter baby!
When Clinton lied nobody died.
So is CNN and Fox going to have a debate before each state votes in the primary. Never heard of such a thing, but then the republicans who control the 25 conservative publishing medias can do anything the want. I tell you one thing the public is so sick of Romney and Gingrich they are just about ready to vote for a billy goat.
Back-peddle Back-peddle.
Now I know why many of the soaps are going off the air. We all know they are ficticious. Besides, who needs them when we can get the same entertainment watching politicians, and the networks don't have to pay them a dime.
So Newt lies, but then sends his campaign secretary to claim he was inaccurate. Well inaccurate means inexact or imprecise, not totally and completely untrue. His statements were patently untrue, not inaccurate.
He is a cheater of life time. Seeing he and his mistress of 6 yrs in the public just make me want to vomit. If he is nominee I will stay home.
"On Wednesday, however, the campaign conceded the candidate was wrong, both in his debate answer and in his interview with CNN on Tuesday."
IOW, he lied. Twice.
Gingrich recently admitted (with a sly grin) that he does not speak French. That might be true, but he does have a French name, LeRoy, or Le Roi in French, the King in English. Perhaps that explains the size of the ego and arrogance of this man, who thinks he is divinely mandated to rule over us peasants, and that therefore the normal rules of civilized behavior do not apply to him.
Whenever Newt is moving his lips hes telling a lie. There are sheeple out there who would rather not investigate their candidate, If a candidate says something they like they believe him/her on blind faith, but in the instance of Newt hes been caught lying repeatedly for about the last 13 years. Why would you vote for someone you know is a habitual liar? I mean arent there other GOP candidates running for POTUS who have been more forth right where the truth is concerned other than Newt?
Now that the lie that won South Carolina for Gingrich is exposed, he has a new line. He now says he can relate better to normal people and he is more normal because he had affairs while his wives were sick and then divorced them. He implies people like Romney, Santorum, Paul and Obama can't relate to normal people because they've only had one wife each. But, he says it with a straight face so there will be a group that will believes it.
Admits error? How about reporting the headline correctly CNN and saying "Gingrich has yet to admit lie." which is what everyone knows it was...the answer was simply a way of temporarily jamming the gears of the negative publicity machine until he could say a week later (when it is all blown over) he didn't have anyone to corroborate.
Of course he was 'mistaken'. It is the hallmark of the inveterate liar. Just keep repeating the lie to stall until the next shiny object pops up, and then use the old "Ok, I was 'mistaken', but... LOOK OVER THERE!" line and run like heck to the next lie.
Gingrich characterized ABC's defense as 'just plain baloney'. Newt, every other word out of your mouth is not only baloney, but baloney left in the hot sun for several hours. Just take a look at Politifact... Newt shows up with "Pants on fire" with regularity.
