Biden hits Romney, Gingrich in speech

(CNN) - In a rare moment, Vice President Joe Biden on Friday unleashed criticism of the Republican presidential frontrunners, blasting Mitt Romney and Newt Gingrich by name for their campaign rhetoric.

Biden, who has largely refrained from commenting on the race, specifically targeted the two candidates while speaking at a Democratic retreat in Maryland.

Arguing that while House Republicans are merely "obstructing the president's agenda," the GOP candidates genuinely "believe what they are saying" on the campaign trail.

"I think it is not just political theater but a tactic I really think they believe in," Biden said. "I think they are committed to it."

He made references to controversial positions taken by each candidate, including Romney's opposition to the auto bailouts in which the former Massachusetts governor penned a 2008 column titled "Let Detroit go bankrupt."

Biden also cited Gingrich's popular attack line that President Barack Obama is the "food stamp president," as well as the former House speaker's argument that children in urban areas have poor work ethics.

"I don't want to get going on these guys because it is not appropriate," Biden said. "I think it ends on January 20th of next year–Barack and I once again standing up with a majority in the Congress being sworn in as president and vice president."

Calling all Dems and Independents! Don't be complacent about this election; we need to all get out and vote to re-elect President Obama (and a majority in the House and Senate). If the improving economy and greater national security doesn't move you to do so, consider these two words: Supreme Court.

Whoever is in the White House come January 2013 will nominate at least 1 and possibly up to 3 Supreme Court Justices. If you think the Citizens United ruling and that all the rollbacks on a woman's right to choose on the state level are bad, then just imagine what a solid majority right wing Supreme Court would do to our country.

So get out and VOTE Democratic in November!

All the GOP has is rhetoric. Facts, data and details are used by the Democrats.

He is absolutely correct. It will be Obama/Biden 2012. The Republicans are pathetic and dishonest, with such vitriol dripping from them towards the president. Yet they are the ones talking about being a christians. I would like them to think of Gideon in the bible. He was the least of all but God used him mightily.

Obama and the Dems have got to build some excitement around the possibility of a majority in the House and a filibuster proof Senate! We can finally get the country running strong again. Obama has been dragging a rusty anchor the last two years and deserves a chance to do his thing. We finally have a President with the guts to make decisions that are sensible. I want more.

@Yikes – This will truly be a good day. This country needs time to heal from the GOP regimes of the past, or we will become a third-world nation.

That’s “cool” Mr. VP but “please” don’t overreach
Besides, our comments right now can be kind of “low key”
We have enough on “all” of them and in the General we shall see!!!

As an independent I can see Joe's point. However with the US propping up GM to create a government sponsored car like the volt and it failing to make any sales target that was set is where I think the Obama administration is wrong. No one wants a $40000 cruze. Its like Solyndra. The US people spoke. Green energy is a good idea but doesnt need government backing to make it happen. We shouldnt fund things that people dont want.
