Gingrich demands TV stations pull ad

(CNN) - Newt Gingrich's campaign sent letters to certain TV stations Friday warning them against airing a commercial paid for by a super PAC supporting Mitt Romney.

According to the letter, the campaign claims the ad is "fundamentally NOT TRUE."

Produced by the group Restore Our Future, the commercial is set to air in Georgia, a state Gingrich formerly represented as congressman, as well as other Super Tuesday states.

The spot claims Gingrich co-sponsored a 1989 bill with then-Rep. Nancy Pelosi "that would have given $60 million a year to a U.N. program supporting China's brutal one-child policy."

But the former House speaker claimed the ad is "unequivocally false."

Titled "Global Warming Prevention Act," the bill at issue was introduced while Gingrich was still a congressman but never passed. Along with supporting stricter fuel standards for cars and alternative energy, the legislation also called for sending money to developing countries to promote clean energy standards.

The bill proposed sending money to the U.N. Population Fund, some of which would go to China, but one section in the bill stipulated that no funds should go towards backing involuntary sterilization, abortion, or family planning coercion.

And while it's true Gingrich co-sponsored the legislation with Pelosi, there were a total of 144 House members who also sponsored the bill, according to PolitiFact.

On Friday, the campaign demanded the TV stations immediately refuse or cease airing the ads and "refrain from broadcasting their content until such time as the libelous statements have been removed."

The letter warned if the stations broadcast the ad after receiving the letter, they will be knowingly airing a "false statement" and potentially liable for defamatory communication.

Last month, Team Gingrich made a similar move and called on TV stations to ban another ad by Restore Our Future that claimed Gingrich was fined for an ethics violation during his tenure as speaker. Gingrich maintained he was forced to pay a "reimbursement," not a fine.

The candidate has long pushed back against negative ads from the super PAC, as well as Romney's campaign. Since placing second in Florida's primary last month, Gingrich has largely attributed negative ads for his recent decline in the polls and disappointing finishes in other contests.

Actually, Newt has a point. Lots of these ads are way over the top and those that are blatantly false should be pulled. We already have laws against speech involving deliberate lies, so I don't see this as a free speech issue. These ads decrease the effectiveness of our political system, so kudos to Newt.

  6. Whatever

If this sort of thing were made light of regarding Ron Paul, it wouldn't be made light of. Of course, it's all BS regarding Ron Paul, but still, good or bad, the msm doesn't even mention the name Ron Paul. They can't afford for even one more person to learn of his existence.

You mean they make attack adds that aren't true? Next thing you'll tell me that the politicians themselves lie.

Cry baby Newt is at it again, how dare they, how dare they show this ad that is using the truth as their facts, What were they thinking?!? Newt claims the ad is a lie because other people sponsored it as well. It's a simple question and not one that is "fundamentally NOT TRUE" as the Newt claims. So hear it is Newt, were you a co-sponsor of this bill or not? Yes or No??? Obviously the answer is YES. While I'm no fan of Mittens, the Newtster is just a plain liar who is always bothered by those "inconvenient truths" as he likes to term things lately. The American people are really tired of hearing newts lies, please go home Newt and cry by yourself. don't invite us along for the ride because we're not going to join in your pitty party.

Newt let the courts handle it but keep up the pressure or things will never change. These folks criticizing you have no clue and live for the status quo. Keep in mind Obama did the same thing to Hillary a few years ago. How soon they forget. What a joke

Newt is too pathetic for words.
Where was he when the GOP was slamming Kerry, and Obama, and Clinton, and Gore, and Mondale?
It's okay for Newt to do – but, not for others to do it to Newt.
Is this what anyone thinks is good for a leader? You really must be kidding. It would be the decline and fall of the U.S.
    Just pathetic.

Mitt Romney's super PAC lie. Oh goodness, whatever will we do? The sad truth is, lies (aka deceptive spin) have been a Romney staple throughout his business and political careers. He lies about his opponents. He lies about the facts. He even lies about himself. Now, this is probably a case of the pot calling the kettle black, but that just means neither the pot nor the kettle are fit for the Presidency.

Gingrich is worse than Obama and that's really bad. Romney is Obama and Santorum is a nut that wants a Judeo christian version of Shari'a law! Barack Obama doesn't care one bit about the working class. Take it from this broke UAW member and steward, it's time to elect an honest man and get this monolithic government out of our lives. For freedom and restoration of the rule of law, Ron Paul in 2012!

No debates this week so Spkr. Gingrich has to find another way to remind voters that he is the official angry candidate. After making this statement he went home and yelled at those dang kids to get off of his lawn.
