The Detroit News endorses Romney

(CNN) – The Detroit News, one of the largest newspapers in Mitt Romney's native state of Michigan, endorsed the Republican presidential candidate on Wednesday, just days before the state's critical primary.

"Mitt Romney stands alone among the Republican primary field as the candidate capable of winning the White House, and more importantly, of leading the nation to a prosperous future," the editorial read.

The former Massachusetts governor has planted his flag in the Wolverine State, where his father once served as governor. His campaign and a pro-Romney super PAC have purchased major ad buys to combat his chief rival, Rick Santorum, who has enjoyed a recent surge in popularity. Several polls show the two candidates in a heated race in the state.

The newspaper comes as a boost for Romney before Michigan voters head to the polls on Tuesday.

The editorial praised Romney as the most qualified and electable candidate, citing his corporate experience at Bain Capital, a private equity firm.

While the editorial board took issue with Romney's 2008 opposition to the so-called auto bailouts–funds the newspaper deemed "absolutely essential to the survival" of the auto industry–the board said it was not a "differentiator issue," as all four of the remaining GOP candidates opposed the bailouts.

"But if America is to avoid financial catastrophe, the next president must be willing to downsize government, jettison some of its operations and slash a federal work force that has grown by 12 percent over the past four years," the board said. "Romney is best equipped for that task."

As for Santorum, the paper said Republicans are "delusional" if they think the former Pennsylvania senator could defeat President Barack Obama in November.

Pointing to his failed re-election bid in 2006 and his recent rhetoric on social issues, the editorial board said "nothing in his background suggests he has the skills to unify Americans behind his banner and become the leader of the free world."

the board said it was not a "differentiator issue,"
The auto bailout should be the only issue. If any of the GOBP candidates were President in 2008, we would not have an auto industry today.

Right. Just what the US needs, Romney wwould do to the US Treasury what he and Bain Capital did to Dynamic Steel. Fire Americans, shut the doors, liquidate assets and raid the pension fund. That will get the US on track eh!

How much $$$ did the Romney campaign have to dish out to get this endorsement?

"The editorial praised Romney as the most qualified and electable candidate, citing his corporate experience at Bain Capital, a private equity firm."

What exactly did Romney do at Bain that he has so much experience? We know that he fired people and profited the money leaving the employees with no severence pay and unemployed. If that is the experience that Detroit, Michigan, and the rest of the country are looking for then Romney is your man. Now if you are looking for someone who has been honest this election process whether you agree with him or not, vote Rick Santorum. Honesty+Conservatism+Faith=Santorum

Besides make a lot of money for himself, can anyone tell me what exactly Mitt Romney did at Bain to create "100,000 jobs" as he has claimed. At best, I think Romney is counting jobs created *after* he left the company.

That is just the solution - cut government that people need to survive until there is that job that they are trained for. I have to say that I don't think that these candidates really know what they are doing. It is cut this and that without really looking to do something that creates growth as best I can tell.

Romney undercuts Republican message! "If you just cut - if all you're thinking about is just cutting spending - why as you cut spending you'll slow down the economy, so you have to at the same time create pro-growth tax policies."

So he agrees with Obama and disagrees with the GOP that you can't just cut your way out of a recession, right? LMAO!

The article states "downsize government, jettison some of it's operations and slash a federal work force" and " Romney is best equipped for the task". Indeed, Romney has a proven history of busting down companies and firing people. And, now Romney wants to implement this business tactic on a national level.
