Source: Santorum to receive Secret Service protection

(CNN) - Republican presidential candidate Rick Santorum will receive Secret Service protection this week, a source familiar with the situation told CNN.

At this time, GOP presidential rival Mitt Romney is the sole candidate granted protection.

A spokesman for the Secret Service declined to comment on the matter when contacted by CNN.

Meanwhile, a source with Newt Gingrich's campaign confirmed the former House speaker also requested protection. The source did not know when the paperwork was submitted but said discussions about putting in the request began last week.

Gingrich's campaign has not yet received a response from the Secret Service, the source said.

- CNN's Kevin Bohn and Shawna Shepherd contributed to this report.

What a waste of our money. These losers spout their hateful rhetoric, and now we the people are supposed to pay for it.

He is worried about getting glitter-bombed. You don't really get beaten for being straight... but you may end up dead just for going out in public for being gay. What does merit Secret Service protection is human dignity not hate.

Huh. Isn't Secret Service paid by the Federal government? And doesn't Rick Santorum say he wants to cut the Federal government down to the bare minimum? Well then I say no Secret Service for him... If someone comes after him, then he can stun them with his arguments about how evil the government is.

I have no problem with this. I would like to know if Ron Paul would accept it if he became the nominee? I don't want anyone hurt or killed over being a candidate.

Who pays for this? Hope its not my tax dollars. They don't want tax dollars paying for birth control, but they can get protection!! It is a mans world after all.

Ron Paul doesn't have to worry though. The fact that he's still in the running proves that he's just a crazy OLD man..

Does the Secret Service even employ the number of agents it would take to form a circle around Gingrich?

I wonder if Ron Paul is politically opposed to Secret Service protection. Wonder how he feels about this in time of war (say the U.S. was attacked).

It looks like all the two faced small government proponents want some big government protection. They're all pro second amendment, have them carry their own protection.

Is it just me or does the connotation of the SS (secret service?) sort of look like the nazis are running this country anyways? Next we'll have a 'Blitzkrieg' ? Already do, in the Mid-East, LOL

I feel so sorry for the poor secret service agents that have to hang around all day with the likes of either of these annoying imbeciles, Santorum or Gingerich!

Why bother? Nothing can penetrate the bubble of 1950 that Santorum lives in.

The Secret Service can protect him from assassins, but can they protect Santorum from himself?
