Fluke on Limbaugh comment: 'I'm not going to be silenced'

(CNN) – The Georgetown law student targeted by Rush Limbaugh for her position on contraceptives said Friday she was "upset and outraged" when she first heard the radio talk show host had called her a "slut."

"I felt probably the way many women do when they are called those types of names," Sandra Fluke told CNN. "Initially hurt and then very quickly upset and outraged because somebody is trying to silence you."

Fluke, who advocated last week in a Democratic hearing for the Obama policy requiring employers provide free contraception coverage, said she was sitting at a computer Wednesday when she read online that Limbaugh had personally attacked her during his radio show.

Calling her a "slut" and "prostitute," Limbaugh has said if taxpayers are going to pay for women to have sex, then they should post videos of their activities so everyone can watch.

His comments have sparked a firestorm in the last two days, with Democrats seizing on it as an opportunity to keep the political story alive.

President Barack Obama called Fluke on Friday to offer his support.

"That wasn't on my schedule for the day," Fluke joked, referring to Obama's call. "But I was happy to add that to the schedule."

The law student told CNN she thinks Limbaugh was "confused" about her testimony.

"For starters, I didn't say that I should be paid for anything. What we were talking about is private insurance covering a medical need. It has nothing to do with the government paying for anything or taxpayers or anything like that," she said.

While Fluke attends a Jesuit university that does not cover contraception as part of its health insurance plans, the school's president defended Fluke on Friday.

Religiously-affiliated institutions, like Georgetown, oppose providing contraception.

While some Republicans argue abstinence as the best form of birth control, Fluke said legislation needs to be realistic.

"We're talking about national legislation. Legislation has to reflect reality, not ideology and I don't think that we can actually expect that American women are going to stop engaging in healthy sexual behaviors," Fluke said.

But the law student said women are not going to be "silenced" about the issue.

"They're going to speak up for health care needs and what this means to them and I'm certainly not going to be silenced," she said.

This poor excuse for a human being must be mentally ill. No one in their right mind can really think that way. WHY is he allowed to continue to carry on the way he does? He needs to be committed, and recieve help for his obvious mental health issues. Is this who represents AMERICA? Glad I am Canadian. We actually passed a law to keep Fox News, and the Rush Limbaugh types off our airways.

My personal opinion: Anyone who is opposed to birth control is a ridiculous dinosaur.

BUT guess what? My opinion doesn't matter. Separation of church and state means, "SEPARATION OF CHURCH AND STATE!".

You want free birth control? DON'T GO TO A CATHOLIC SCHOOL!

Anyone posting comments to this story that think it's about taxpayers paying for contraception needs to have their head examined. The debate has never been about taxpayers footing the bill. It's about insurance companies offering it reproductive health coverage universally and not omitting coverage for businesses/organizations that oppose it. Contraception and birth control is a health care issue and nothing further. Anything more than that is ideology which doesn't belong in health care.

There is a reason why Rush is a college dropout and this young lady is a law student in Georgetown... Then again, some people in this country idolize idiots and insult hard working, studying, educated professionals... Gotta love those moronic "patriots"....

I thought we left this old stuff back in the 70s. What happened? Women are still being treated like second class citizens. What is wrong with people today? Folks, we're all in this big boat of life together. Let's start working together and not be at odds with each other. We're living in the modern age now. Geez. Rush Limbaugh and his ilk are very old news.

I don't think tax payers should have to pay women's "extra"curricular activities! IF THEY WANT TO PLAY, THEY SHOULD PAY! Take responsibility for your actions and choices! Others shouldn't have to pay for their fun. Get a job and pay for your own birth control pills!

Many women these days fit the description of a sl u t. So what? If the name fits wear it proudly. But don't complain if you exhibit that behavior and then you get tagged with the name.

Rush Limbaugh is hardly of the "face" of Republicans. He is simply a Republican who is possibly ill-informed, and doesn't think before he speaks. My father used to say "Always make sure your brain is engaged before putting your mouth into gear". Try it sometime, Rush.

Is this an interesting intrigue and conspiracy?

Could it be that Limbaugh is a secret Democrat? Many would accuse him of that, but alas, he is just another vile and hateful Republican mouthpiece.

But it seems that every time he opens that vile mouth of his he does more damage to the Republican party than any Democrat could.

So let us all chant !

"Rush for president" of the country of "Vile". – May the Republicans all move there and worship him as their "Oracle".

Just get them off our shores and out of government office.

I don't care if Ms. Fluke wants to sleep with every man in the DC area. It's her business, and I don't judge. Where I have a problem – like most other people that are siding with Rush on this one – is that we, the tax payers, shouldn't have to PAY for it. I've heard the arguments about birth control pills regulating hormones and such...okay, fair enough. But that's not what it is predominately used for, and this isn't the only type of birth control we are expected to cover. This is not about an actual medical condition being covered or not; it's about asking tax payers to foot the bill for a choice someone doesn't have to make. Personal insults against Limbuagh and others that disagree with Ms. Fluke cheapen your argument and make you just as petty and hateful as you claim Limbaugh to be.

    March 2, 2012 11:22 pm at 11:22 pm |
  22. Really?

Oh the irony of someone calling Limbaugh mean and hateful for using hyperbole and then turning around and saying his future death should be a holiday.

Since when did insulting someone during controversial argument become worse than wishing for someone's death?

The thing that will be the most unsettling when Limbaugh passes away will be the way the extreme left acts. It's up to the rest of us to remember that they do not represent the majority of the left while also remembering that having different political parties and freedom of speech are things that make this country great.

Also, if men can get viagra covered by insurance to get hard, women should have contraception covered, especially because it is used for other health related illness, unlike viagra! i think fluke should sue, that is defamation of charactor, not free speech! and big boycotts should be carried out! social abuse & defamation of women should no longer be accepted in society!
