Fluke on Limbaugh comment: 'I'm not going to be silenced'

(CNN) – The Georgetown law student targeted by Rush Limbaugh for her position on contraceptives said Friday she was "upset and outraged" when she first heard the radio talk show host had called her a "slut."

"I felt probably the way many women do when they are called those types of names," Sandra Fluke told CNN. "Initially hurt and then very quickly upset and outraged because somebody is trying to silence you."

Fluke, who advocated last week in a Democratic hearing for the Obama policy requiring employers provide free contraception coverage, said she was sitting at a computer Wednesday when she read online that Limbaugh had personally attacked her during his radio show.

Calling her a "slut" and "prostitute," Limbaugh has said if taxpayers are going to pay for women to have sex, then they should post videos of their activities so everyone can watch.

His comments have sparked a firestorm in the last two days, with Democrats seizing on it as an opportunity to keep the political story alive.

President Barack Obama called Fluke on Friday to offer his support.

"That wasn't on my schedule for the day," Fluke joked, referring to Obama's call. "But I was happy to add that to the schedule."

The law student told CNN she thinks Limbaugh was "confused" about her testimony.

"For starters, I didn't say that I should be paid for anything. What we were talking about is private insurance covering a medical need. It has nothing to do with the government paying for anything or taxpayers or anything like that," she said.

While Fluke attends a Jesuit university that does not cover contraception as part of its health insurance plans, the school's president defended Fluke on Friday.

Religiously-affiliated institutions, like Georgetown, oppose providing contraception.

While some Republicans argue abstinence as the best form of birth control, Fluke said legislation needs to be realistic.

"We're talking about national legislation. Legislation has to reflect reality, not ideology and I don't think that we can actually expect that American women are going to stop engaging in healthy sexual behaviors," Fluke said.

But the law student said women are not going to be "silenced" about the issue.

"They're going to speak up for health care needs and what this means to them and I'm certainly not going to be silenced," she said.

MEANWHILE...Viagra remains covered under many insurance plans. Absolute ridiculousness from the RELIGIOUS conservative right. Stop ruining the good names of conservatives with your fairy tale driven lies. Limbaugh is just after ratings, he knew what he was doing...

Well... Seeing as how Obama feels the need to continually apologize for something someone else said or did, I guess it's about time he start apologizing for Rush too.
Here is what I know. When MY WIFE AND I decided to get married and NOT have children we used the birth control of her choice. I paid for it. Not my insurance. Not my employer. Not your tax dollars. I paid for it. And it is just as available now as it was then. Even more so. So Sandra.... Either forgo a couple of Starbucks coffees and pay for your own pills or better yet... do everyone a favor and just keep your pants on.

I just don't get why it should be mandated that birth control be provided for free to anyone.

Shame on Limbaugh, but he and his stupid comment should be left in the septic tank where it belongs.

On the other hand I shouldn't be expected to provide for your birth control. The only advantage I get out of this is the possibility of preventing the creation of yet another blood sucking moron expecting everything should be given for free. If someone could show me the numbers on how many idiots might be prevented from joining the company of life I might be willing to fork over some of my earned cash to forward the cause.

Oh yeah, one more thing. Even given my prior comment, I do think Rush's comments were out of line. No need to be have an opinion of your own... just go with the popular view Rush... C'mon. Overall I'm thinking his comments were really just a "FLUKE" : )

As much as I can't stand Limbaugh, and his method of trying to get his point across. Why should the American Tax Payer flip the bill for any woman that wants birth control. If she wants birth control, she's welcome to purchase it, why should I be forced to pay for someone else to purchase what they are fully capable of doing on their own?

What this story has done is take focus off of one important aspect. There is no denying that it is the responsable thing for women to take contraceptives, but here's what's being completely ignored; Yes... take all the contraceptives you feel you need, but does your insurence have to pay for them for you? Why can't you pay for your own contraceptives. They're cheap enough.

The purpose of the government is not to impose the will of the 99, it is to protect the freedoms of the 100. Obama has used big government to impose his religious beliefs on everyone. While only some American's religions have been fundamentally violated, all Americans have been deprived of basic freedom. Barack Obama is not okay. I want my freedom back.

Why can't anyone see the issue here? The issue is whether or not the federal government should force religious organizations to offer something (contraceptives in this case) in complete opposition to their fundamental beliefs. Also, should the taxpayers foot the bill?

The answer to both of those questions is a resounding no regardless of what off-the-wall comments Rush Limbaugh said. I've never been fond of him, and frankly don't know why someone with his power would use the words that he did.

So 4x married Limbaugh thinks insurance should pay for Viagra so fat old men can get it on with gold-diggers half their age but women who use birth control are immoral. I hope he keeps threatening and bullying and disgracing himself until he drives every last sponsor away from his program and every last woman away from the Republican party. And Mary Matalin, I hope the Republicans paid you well to defend Rush's obscene attack on a good person because your performance on Anderson 360 tonight cost you any respect you had in most people's eyes.

First it is private insurance she is talking about. Secondly, how many republican men get their viagra covered by insurance. Just another paranoid republican complaining about the liberal big government while trying to govern what they claim to be moral. Like their moral condemnation!
