Fluke on Limbaugh comment: 'I'm not going to be silenced'

(CNN) – The Georgetown law student targeted by Rush Limbaugh for her position on contraceptives said Friday she was "upset and outraged" when she first heard the radio talk show host had called her a "slut."

"I felt probably the way many women do when they are called those types of names," Sandra Fluke told CNN. "Initially hurt and then very quickly upset and outraged because somebody is trying to silence you."

Fluke, who advocated last week in a Democratic hearing for the Obama policy requiring employers provide free contraception coverage, said she was sitting at a computer Wednesday when she read online that Limbaugh had personally attacked her during his radio show.

Calling her a "slut" and "prostitute," Limbaugh has said if taxpayers are going to pay for women to have sex, then they should post videos of their activities so everyone can watch.

His comments have sparked a firestorm in the last two days, with Democrats seizing on it as an opportunity to keep the political story alive.

President Barack Obama called Fluke on Friday to offer his support.

"That wasn't on my schedule for the day," Fluke joked, referring to Obama's call. "But I was happy to add that to the schedule."

The law student told CNN she thinks Limbaugh was "confused" about her testimony.

"For starters, I didn't say that I should be paid for anything. What we were talking about is private insurance covering a medical need. It has nothing to do with the government paying for anything or taxpayers or anything like that," she said.

While Fluke attends a Jesuit university that does not cover contraception as part of its health insurance plans, the school's president defended Fluke on Friday.

Religiously-affiliated institutions, like Georgetown, oppose providing contraception.

While some Republicans argue abstinence as the best form of birth control, Fluke said legislation needs to be realistic.

"We're talking about national legislation. Legislation has to reflect reality, not ideology and I don't think that we can actually expect that American women are going to stop engaging in healthy sexual behaviors," Fluke said.

But the law student said women are not going to be "silenced" about the issue.

"They're going to speak up for health care needs and what this means to them and I'm certainly not going to be silenced," she said.

Why is it that men think birth control is only used as a contraceptive? For many women it cures endometrios and actually helps bring back ovulation after the unknown cause of absent periods.

To Feral C and Cobiahunter, you two guys need to get a life or at least admit you have no facts to back up your rants. Clearly you have no idea what the issues are because if you did you would shut up. You are sad examples of what passes for conservative ideas these days. I pity you and those who know you. Women are the only people qualified to deal with this issue.

Ms. Fluke, those of us who are not 'owned' by some bully like Limbaugh, agree with you. America is too far along in its history for Limbaugh to even be a player in this country. He is seriously a double burger away from a heart attack. He should be making peace with God instead of being a boil on the neck of society. You are a fine young women looking toward her future and using her smarts. Hello malef conservatives – women would not NEED birth control if you men would keep your hands to yourself. Heck you even think a raped woman should be forced to have the baby. We women do not want to go back to living under a man's thumb. We are too smart for that now and deserve to make our own decisions. Yes I am married, but my husband's knuckles do not drag on the ground when he walks. 🙂

This is so unbelievable! The girl is a law student ! She can afford her own birth control! I am not paying for stupid college students who are brats anyway to flunk their way through school sleeping around with every Tom dick and Harry dong who have no morals or scruples to begin with when we have very real issues of starvation and joblessness and DEBT and oh yeah A Nuclear threat and the systematic dismantling of our military. The media democrats need to realize we are so much smarter than you think. We see right through you idiots! The more you push us the more we vote conservative!

Rush Limbaugh is just a troll. He has perfected making remarks like this into an art form. I don't agree with what he says, I don't even think HE agrees with a lot of what he says. However, he realizes like I do, that we live in a country full of bigoted rednecks who love to hear it, and a large percentage of the other half hate what he says, therefore he manipulates this into attention, ratings, and money. Just like a lot of the people that troll on websites such as this don't always believe what they say, Rush is the same. They do it because they know people pay attention to them. I would never want to do what he does for my own source of income, but kudos to him for realizing he can manipulate dumb people into either following him, or denouncing him. It's win-win for him...

These are some shameful and sad days in the United States. At a time when we have severe weather destruction happening across multiple states and people need to be working together, we are still divided by hate and prejudice. People like Rush Limbaugh and many members of the GOP perpetuate this hate with their remarks against The President, African-Americans, Women and Latinos. They say evil things and then they try to make it right by saying that I didn't mean to say that. WHAT DID YOU MEAN EXACTLY!! How can we go to other countries, have wars in order to promote democracy and we have people in Georgia fighting in court to have President Obama removed from the ballot. Or, how various states have introduced new rules in order to keep minorities from getting registered to vote at all. The country commits many hateful acts and then disguise it under the "Religious Right or Evangelical Christian" banner, just stop lying to people. I'm a CHRISTIAN and the remarks and actions I've seen taking place since President Obama has been in office are FAR from what anyone in their right mind would call CHRISTIAN.

Limbaugh is nothing more than a verbally abusive misogynist. Another point, I don't see why phosphodiesterase inhibitors are covered by insurance and many birth control medications are out of pocket. I see a bit of gender preference going on here. One is to achieve a stiff wienie and the other, in many cases, for legit health reasons. Shame on you RL for demonstrating your lack of emotional intelligence.

Ms Fluke apparently has VERY low "standards" for the guys she sleeps with. I mean REALLY – if the guy you are banging is not willing to drop a buck for a freakin' condom, he OBVIOUSLY doesn't give a rip about you, and if you are doing guys that don't think you are worth a buck, then Rush's statement is TRUE!

Interesting that no one complains about private insurance covering Viagra. I bet if threatened to cut that out that insurance coverage, you'd have one hysterical right- wing outcry.
