Fluke on Limbaugh comment: 'I'm not going to be silenced'

(CNN) – The Georgetown law student targeted by Rush Limbaugh for her position on contraceptives said Friday she was "upset and outraged" when she first heard the radio talk show host had called her a "slut."

"I felt probably the way many women do when they are called those types of names," Sandra Fluke told CNN. "Initially hurt and then very quickly upset and outraged because somebody is trying to silence you."

Fluke, who advocated last week in a Democratic hearing for the Obama policy requiring employers provide free contraception coverage, said she was sitting at a computer Wednesday when she read online that Limbaugh had personally attacked her during his radio show.

Calling her a "slut" and "prostitute," Limbaugh has said if taxpayers are going to pay for women to have sex, then they should post videos of their activities so everyone can watch.

His comments have sparked a firestorm in the last two days, with Democrats seizing on it as an opportunity to keep the political story alive.

President Barack Obama called Fluke on Friday to offer his support.

"That wasn't on my schedule for the day," Fluke joked, referring to Obama's call. "But I was happy to add that to the schedule."

The law student told CNN she thinks Limbaugh was "confused" about her testimony.

"For starters, I didn't say that I should be paid for anything. What we were talking about is private insurance covering a medical need. It has nothing to do with the government paying for anything or taxpayers or anything like that," she said.

While Fluke attends a Jesuit university that does not cover contraception as part of its health insurance plans, the school's president defended Fluke on Friday.

Religiously-affiliated institutions, like Georgetown, oppose providing contraception.

While some Republicans argue abstinence as the best form of birth control, Fluke said legislation needs to be realistic.

"We're talking about national legislation. Legislation has to reflect reality, not ideology and I don't think that we can actually expect that American women are going to stop engaging in healthy sexual behaviors," Fluke said.

But the law student said women are not going to be "silenced" about the issue.

"They're going to speak up for health care needs and what this means to them and I'm certainly not going to be silenced," she said.

Ya gotta give to Rush for telling it like it is! This woman can afford to attend a college that cost somewhere around $45,000.00 a year and she can't afford her own birth control. Seems like she sure can con the liberals.

The greatest thing about this country is that a low life such as Limbaugh and those to whom he panders are able to express their opinions no matter how disgusting without having to worry about the government hauling them off and throwing them in a hole.

After everything that the republicans have done over the past 20 years I cannot in good conscience associate with anyone who still considers him or herself a republican. I just can't. They simply are not good people and do not deserve the time of day.

I do believe people exist who would defend such hate-speech; but mostly, I think these comments favoring this filth from RL are people paid by the Kochs and Mit's backers, and possibly whatever second son hopes to bring a bit of pretend-sanity to the GOP convention–ignore them, and OCCUPY!

This bimbo wants all of us to pay for her contraceptives? Well I have a water bill, light bill, and gas bill that she can pay for me. No wonder the rest of the world doesn't have any respect for the United States anymore. The leaders of corrupt African nations are admonishing it's citizens not be like the United States in it's perversion. Even Robert Mugabe has enough sense to look at us and see what is happening to our people and what a ridiculous cesspool we have become over here. The amazing thing is this no-load bimbo makes perfect sense to herself in her deluded mind.

Enough of this socialism!! Hard work is what made this country great. If you want to be lazy and have the government attend to your every need, move somewhere else, please. I'm a registered independent and certainly won't vote for Obama again. Once is enough!

It is sad that his employer has not removed him from his position, so advertisers must do their work for them by pulling their ads. Any sports announcer making comparable racist or other inappropriate comments have lost their jobs. It's amazing that someone can make statements like this about women and remain employed.

There has been a massive movement on the internet nationwide to boycott Rush and get him off the airways. It's past time for this evil gas bag to shut his piehole and get out of America's face. Regardless of what I think of Republicans, they should die of shame to even be affiliated with this person. I can only think the put up with his filty behavior to rake in a few more votes from the ignorant and gullible.

And where are your sources for that information? Or are you just pulling all those accusations out of thin air?

    @Feral Conservative

Exactly how does private insurance coverage have anything to do with the taxpayers? Is medical insurance now a federal tax? When did this happen? Not all contraceptives are free, and Birth Control Pills are used for more than just not getting pregnant you ignorant a**.

Interesting, a President with no accomplishments to campaign on but time to call and support a"student" who is actually is little more than a political operative trying to spin a story in the attempt to effect the upcoming super Tuesday vote. Question: Did the President condemn or offer his support to Sarah Palin's daughter when she was attacked with similar language for doing nothing more than being a child who made a mistake? The "healthcare" that the President has proposed is nothing more than a government supported attack on religious freedom in America-and will in the end only serve to destroy all American's, both men and women's right. Wake up America!

Rush is an idiot and he knows it. He's also a bully hiding behind the insensitivity of many republicans. What's his moral value to the party now. I don't hear love one another on Rush's show, or judge not lest ye be. or as you have done it unto the least of these you have done it unto me, not even the golden rule. What's christian or moral about his show. It's emotional gamesmanship promoting 7th grade values "my team's better than your team. It's that simple, but many listen and never fact check what is said. How sad for our country.
