Obama calls Sandra Fluke, Limbaugh kisses it off

(CNN) – President Barack Obama called Sandra Fluke Friday to offer his support to the law student who has come under attack following her testimony to a House panel in support of access to contraceptives.

"The president was expressing his support for her and his disappointment in the kind of attacks that have been leveled at her and to her and his appreciation for her willingness to stand tall and express her opinion," White House Press Secretary Jay Carney said at the White House press briefing.

He said the president feels the personal attacks are "inappropriate."

"The fact that our political discourse has become debased in many ways is bad enough," Carney said. "It is worse when it is directed at a private citizen who was simply expressing her views on a matter of public policy."

Fluke was targeted by conservative radio host Rush Limbaugh on Wednesday, when he called her a "slut" and "prostitute" and again on Friday.

The conservative firebrand also responded to Obama's call with a kissing sound.

"Obama just called Sandra Fluke to make sure that she was alright, aw," Limbaugh said Friday. "That is so compassionate. What a great guy. The president called her to make sure she's OK."

Lawmakers on both sides of the aisle have weighed in on the issue. House Democrats rallied Thursday in response to Limbaugh's comments by sending a letter to House Speaker John Boehner urging him to condemn the statements, which to date has 80 signatures. Boehner on Friday called Limbaugh's remarks "inappropriate."

Several companies - including LegalZoom, Sleep Number, and Sleep Train Mattress - said in online postings that they were withdrawing advertisements from Limbaugh's program.

First trash talk, then trash TV, now trash politics. The Tea/Republicans are taking America to new lows of civility and tolerance. In a word they are un-American.

Rush is racing to fill the void left by the late lamented blogger, Breitbum. No need to specify which "void" that is.

Why is it fair for working families to pay $3,000 year for a law student to get screwed for 12 months. I guess you could argue that we are paying for her to get screwed and then after she passes the law exaime she will be able to spend her life screwing the tax payers of America in court................Wait a minute we are getting screwed both ways............That's CHANGE I guess. How it's working out for you ?

People see through your bias, CNN. That's why we don't trust you."

I don't think the attacks on Breibart were right either, but he was a public person who made a career of attacking people. This woman was an ordinary citizen. Big difference.

As a law student, Ms. Fluke readily knows that free speech protects Mr. Limbaugh's right to say what he thinks. The fact that she doesn't like it, is frankly irrelevant.

Rush Limbaugh is a big fat idiot....oh wait....there's already a book that goes into that. Negative attention is still attention, and this is what spoiled kids crave.

Did Obama also call the widow of Andrew Breitbart to talk to her about the nauseating things said about her husband not minutes after news of his death by liberal media reporters and bloggers?

@MalcmXcrement, (interesting name), so are you attempting to defend Limbaugh's statement? Go on a different blog and condemm the statements made by Rolling Stone about Breibart, but don't justify what Limbaugh said with liberal bias crap.

Political talk show entertainers like LImbaugh is one of the reasons for the lack of civility in political discourse.

There is quite a difference between what happened to "Joe" and what was this person was called. Guess we know what you think of women. As far as Mr. Breibart goes, there were many from the left who had many good things to say about him. Bottom line is you can't fixt stupid and there sure is a lot of that going around.

From what I can tell only the ignorant listen to him anyway. You will not change that but a campaign against the advertisers will work as Glenn Beck can attest to. May I suggest a boycott of those products that do in fact advertise on his program? I have no idea who they are as I would not waste my time listening.

The Daily Kos (Google it) has listed Limbaugh's sponsors as: Pro Flowers, Domino's Pizza, Lending Tree, Life Quotes, e-Harmony, OnStar, Hotwire, CARBONITE, Select Comfort, The Neptune Society of Northern California, Oreck Corporation, Mid-West Life Insurance Co. Tennessee, AutoZone Inc., Mission Pharmacal (Citrical), LegalZoom, Blue-Emu, Citrix Online (GoToMyPC), and American Forces Network. One sponsor, SleepTrain, has already dropped him.

I'm appalled but not particularly amazed by Limbaugh's comments. Being not only a total narcissist, but a sociopath, he has no regard for anyone's feelings as long as he gets to say what he wants. He also has no regard for the truth, since what he was condemning her for was not what she said. He just kind of made up what he wanted her to have said so that he could go off on a rant. Like Joe McCarthy, he has 'no decency and no shame', only an ego to be fed. But, I'm not surprised, since he has long ago revealed what he true values are: deceit, divorce, drug addiction, and draft dodging.

Rush Limbaugh is (by his own admission) a drug-addicted wacko. Why anyone listens to him these days (let alone believing his woozy rants) is beyond me. That the GOP and its teabagging followers give him any credence whatever is a good part of the reason President Obama is likely to win by a Landslide in the coming Election. The GOP seems dead-set to shoot itself in the foot... Boehner's half-hearted response to Limbaugh doesn't make him look any better.

Hey.....It's my right to be a freeloader if I choose to be. And don't offend me by calling me what I am. There should be more laws that require you to pay for what I want. It's my right!!!!!!

Currently, two advertisers have pulled their spots from Rush's show! Good on them! Now, hopefully the rest of his sponsors will do the same. Time to Flush Rush!
