Romney calls billionaire football team owners friends

(CNN) – They're wealthy - not millionaires, but billionaires. They're football fans - so much so, that they own teams. And they're the subjects of yet another misstep which Mitt Romney may wish he didn't make.

Romney has spent recent days working to relate to southern voters, talking up grits, saying "y'all," visiting the Daytona 500 – and on Monday, he campaigned with comedian Jeff Foxworthy, known for his "redneck" jokes. But he stumbled back into the rich and out-of-touch narrative on Monday, when he volunteered in a radio interview that he is friends with at least two billionaire football team owners.

Campaigns spar over delegate math

Atlanta (CNN) - In the increasingly bitter war over who has the edge in the fight for the GOP presidential nomination, the Mitt Romney and Rick Santorum campaigns on Sunday and Monday publicized so-called "internal" memos detailing each candidate's path to victory.

In a lengthy memo intended to counter Romney's claim to be the inevitable Republican nominee, Santorum's campaign called Romney's arithmetic a "defensive smokescreen" put up to "distract from the major problems Romney faces" in state and local delegate conventions.

Reid pushes to break filibusters of 17 judges

Washington (CNN) - Frustrated by what he calls Republican "obstructionism" of President Obama's judicial picks, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid said Monday he would force votes this week to break GOP filibusters of 17 district court nominees.

Democrats hope the unusual and high profile series of votes will pressure Republicans to clear the judges. If they don't, Democrats say it will reinforce their contention that Republicans are responsible for the congressional dysfunction and gridlock that surveys show voters abhor.

Gingrich, Perry aides downplay talk of pre-convention ticket

Atlanta (CNN) - Aides to Newt Gingrich and Rick Perry are downplaying a report the Gingrich campaign is contemplating offering the Texas Governor the number two slot on a presidential ticket.

"Of course we think very highly of Gov. Perry and appreciate very much his generous support, but this is not a topic the two principals have discussed," Kevin Kellems, a senior adviser to the Gingrich campaign, told CNN.

Romney: If battle to convention, 'signaling our doom'

(CNN) – Mitt Romney, fending off talk of a contested GOP convention from rivals Newt Gingrich and Rick Santorum, said Monday it would be catastrophic if Republicans continued to battle for the nomination until August.

"If we go to a convention we would be signaling our doom in terms of replacing President Obama," Romney said in an interview on Fox News. "We need to select someone to become our nominee, get that person nominated and get focused on rebounding and getting him out of the White House."

Foxworthy on hunting with Romney: More dangerous than Cheney

Jackson, Mississippi (CNN) - Add a new joke to Jeff Foxworthy's stand-up routine. . . on the subject of Mitt Romney's invitation to go hunting.

Earlier in the day, Foxworthy appeared at Romney's side at a campaign event in Mobile, Alabama, where the blue-collar comedian threw his support behind the former Massachusetts governor.

BLITZER'S BLOG: Romney backers confident in nomination

(CNN) – Romney supporters are increasingly confident their man has the Republican presidential nomination all but wrapped up although they know he still has work to do. Their confidence is underscored by what they want to discuss. Here are some examples:

Perhaps because of all the attention focused on the HBO film “Game Change” and John McCain’s selection of Sarah Palin as his vice presidential running mate, one insider suggested that it’s now already time for Romney to focus on candidates really qualified to be take charge if necessary.

Jindal won't endorse before Louisiana primary

Austin, Texas (CNN) - Mitt Romney has campaigned across Mississippi with Gov. Phil Bryant at his side, but he won't have similar support once the Republican race veers into a neighboring state.

Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal will not endorse a candidate ahead of the state's March 24 primary, a source close to the governor told CNN.
