Obama beats back GOP over gas prices

Washington (CNN) - Confronted with recent polling suggesting rising gas prices may already be damaging President Obama's political standing ahead of the summer driving season, the president on Thursday reiterated the case that neither he, nor any other politician, has the power to bring down prices in the short term.

"We are starting to see a lot of politicians talking a lot and not doing much," Obama told an enthusiastic crowd at Prince George's Community College in Largo, Maryland. "We've seen this movie before."

Domestic oil production is up and demand is down, but don't expect any help from the GOP. The republicans' have shown that they are more interested "Probe, baby probe," of women, instead of "Drill, baby drill."

The GOP will user any method they can to make the POTUS look bad, even if it has nothing to do with him. It's really old. I can't wait for this circus to be over...

I was just reminded that the republicans refused our president's offer to cut ten dollars in national spending for every $1 raised of revenue. And the right wingnuts said, "No!" so could blame the president.

For my gallon of gas here are the ones who takes the chunks. The drilling co, the co who takes it out to a tanker, the place that makes it gas, the truck that brings it to the station. The station. But do not forget, OPEC, speculaters from wall st. Then it is the taxes. fed, State, County, city, and special legislation to approve roads taxes, and additives we get in the spring. If my gas is 4.35 then how much of that can the president change? The fed tax, which then would make my gas 4.32. For all you righties out there, on Fox oreilly said on 4/12/08 that the price of gas can not be changed by the president.

"You know better," Obama said Monday. "There's no such thing as a quick fix when it comes to high gas prices. There's no silver bullet. Anybody who tells you otherwise isn't really looking for a solution - they're probably just looking to ride the political wave of the moment."

poor poor Barry...just don't have the ability to do anything of use...and finally admits it. We live on energy and we have the right to hold our president responsible for the price and availability of it.... so go ahead obama shirk your duty and we will see you at the voting booth in November.

When FOX NEWS said it was not the President's fault in 2008 then why is it now the President's fault?

Oh wait, I know. It's all political tripe.

You know, if you love pumping gas so much then maybe you should pay more for it? Obama can't solve your addiction for you, or maybe you do want a bigger government?

The USA consumes 20% of worldwide supply.

    Perhaps therein lies the problem.

I have no doubt that the GOP can bring back $2.50 gas prices. They've done it before. It's called economic collapse.

The reference to a "silver bullet" would mean something that can be done to solve the problem PERMANENTLY. I believe that the President releasing some of the nation's strategic oil reserves would be for the SHORT-TERM not a long-term, nor much less a move that he believes would solve the problem permanently. If the president, any president, were to make use of said oil-reserves I would expect it would be an interim measure put in place to relieve the financial burden placed on the populace while other methods/attempts at remedying the situation permanently were explored.

Let's see – the democrats blamed Bush for high gas prices. Now, while gas prices are double what they were then, the President is not to blame. Ironically, Obama is against drilling in the gulf and against fuel pipelines from Canada. Yet, he says he is doing everything he can for the energy issue? Oh, he did waste $500,000,000 on Solyndra!

To NOvember2012. Did you blame W for $4 gas during his administration? Was the high price his fault or are high prices just this Presidents fault? Please share.

What people always fail to look at is the worldwide price of gas and how it has recently gone up almost everywhere. Many countries can only dream of $5.00 a gallon gas. There are many oil producing countries that pay more than $5.00 a gallon right now and you can't blame one President of one country for the price of gas. The Republican lie machine will blame bad weather on Obama next. Its has been proven 100 times over that more drilling will not do a thing for gas prices, and when you get your gas from the world market you pay what the world market charges, and you can't become independent of the world market. It sucks and everyone hates it but no President is going to change the price of gas.

The government controls the cost of oil so that they can determine how much money the general public has at the end of the week. If it wasn't for them controlling how much extra money we all have then there would be an uprising but nobody can save so we just lay on our backs and get screwed. I love the American way of life.
