Obama raises a pint

Washington (CNN) – It wouldn’t be St. Patrick’s Day without a pint of Guinness, even for the commander-in-chief.

President Barack Obama’s motorcade made the mile-and-a-half trip to the The Dubliner, a well-known Capitol Hill pub, at around 12:30 p.m. Saturday – early by normal standards, but just on time for most St. Patrick’s Day partiers.

The president enjoyed a Guinness, a classic (if slightly uninspired) choice for the holiday, and spent time shaking hands with other pub-goers, many of whom were wearing green top hats and wigs. At one point he raised his pint to toast the crowd.

The president sported a moss-colored fleece jacket over an open-collared white shirt, enough to avoid pinches from enthusiastic revelers.

Obama’s Irish roots have been well explored in the three years he’s been in office. In May 2011 he visited Moneygall, in central Ireland, to visit the town his great-great-great grandfather emigrated from in the nineteenth century.

The Irish Taoiseach (prime minister), Enda Kenny, will visit Obama in Washington on Tuesday, and attend a belated St. Patrick’s Day lunch at the U.S. Capitol. In the evening the president and first lady Michelle Obama will host St. Patrick’s Day reception at the White House.

Aside from the Guinness run, Obama and his family marked the Irish holiday by dying the water in the South Lawn fountain green.

Obama’s reelection campaign also got into the holiday mood Saturday, offering a special price on green t-shirts proclaiming: ‘I (shamrock) O’Bama.”

This is the future, America elected a gentleman with the ability to reflect the nation we are becoming, not the one in our past. All of the president's current critics harp about going back to something. We cannot go back and thoughtful adults understand this, regardless of their religion, ethnicity or gender.

Why do people criticize Obama's vacation time? He's taken a third of the amount of time off as Bush did in his presidency, and half the amount of time off as Reagan did in his. If Republicans are saying Obama is lazy, then their hero is twice as lazy, and Bush might as well have not been president at all.

II say bottoms up, Mr. President. Haters gonna hate- these are the same people that were silent when Bush was down in Texas on his ranch more than he was in the White House.

There is no need to be embarrased for being Irish, unless YOU have done something wrong.

I love a President that can have a beer,Romney is not allowed to drink and Santorum thinks if you take a drink you will never get to heaven so it is nice to see a President that is also a real person like many of us. I liked when Bush did it and I like the realness of Obama

Once again, President Obama shows how down-to-Earth he is as a human being, how well he can relate to the regular Joes of America and how comfortable he is with working-class Americans. Mitt Romney could never pull this off even if he doesn't drink; he'd probably say he knows the guy who owns the block the tavern is on. Santorum would proclaim it leads to sexual promiscuity and is sinful. Gingrich would want his beer on the moon. BARACK OBAMA GETS MY VOTE FOR 2012!

I have no problem with the President meeting the folks and having a beer on St. Patrick's Day and, I think, that no one elsde should have a problem with it either. What my problem is that over the last 6 months it looks Washington has stopped "governing". We never hear anything about the President meeting members of Congress or him weighing in on issues that are up for votes in both Houses. He is not only the leader of his Party but he is also our Chief Executive Officer. It seems that he is not only on the other side of the fence from the Republicans, he is also at odds with the likes of Harry Reid, Nancy Pelosi and the rest of the Democratic electeds. We the masses to not begrudge him from campaigning and going on vacation – what we do want is governance and a feeling that he is doing what's best for the Country and not what's best for his campaign and re-election chances. It's getting to the point that we can't tell the difference between campaign and governing mode with him.

Obama could save a baby from a burning building and the GOP would complain that he didn't prevent the fire in the first place.

It doesn't matter what Obama does, the rethugs are trying to destroy our country with negativity and doom and gloom.

You have to admire a man who can get so much accomplished for the country, even with the worst group of Republican obstructionists working against him. And, for Mitch McConnell et al in Congress to publicly state that the number one priority was to remove the President from office begs the question of whether or not these men should be investigated and put under oath to determine if their actions to undermine the country is, indeed, illegal and subversive. They do take an oath of Office to work for, not against, the best interests of the USA.
