Obama jabs 'birthers' with Irish certificate

(CNN) - While receiving a formal certificate of Irish heritage at a St. Patrick's Day celebration on Tuesday, President Barack Obama didn't miss a beat in taking a jab at the so-called "birther" movement.

"This will have a special place of honor alongside my birth certificate," he joked, to great laughter.

Ireland's Taoiseach (prime minister) Enda Kenny presented Obama with the certificate at a White House reception in honor of the president's Irish roots.

The document was to serve, Kenny said, as a "permanent reminder" of Obama's trip last year to the Irish town of Moneygall, where the president's great-great-great grandfather emigrated from during the nineteenth century.

Earlier in the day, Obama and Kenny, along with Vice President Joe Biden, joined House Speaker John Boehner for a lunch on Capitol Hill.

At the reception in the East Room Tuesday night, Obama acknowledged the belated holiday festivity.

"Today is not in fact St. Patrick's Day," he joked. "We just wanted to prove that America considers Ireland a dear and steadfast friend every day of the year."

Also making an appearance at the reception was Democratic Gov. Martin O'Malley of Maryland, whose Irish rock band, "O'Malley's March," performed for the guests, many of them dressed in green.

The White House reception marked an extended celebration of St. Patrick's Day for the president. On Saturday, Obama popped into a popular pub in Washington to have a pint of Guinness with other revelers.

Hitler did say "If you tell a lie enough, eventually most people will believe it." Karl Rove proved that line to be true. Face it dannydrums, we have a black man for President. American born and bred. And he'll be President for another 4 years considering the potential competition he's facing.

When I think of what Obama has done in 4 years, I know it was better than what McCain & Palin couldn't even come close to achieving.

    @!Dannydrums –

    1. There was no video. Breitbart lied.

    2. Yes. Breitbart was an overweight man with a bad heart and a drinking problem. He dropped dead after getting into an argument with someone in a bar.

    3. The video never existed.

    4. The President's video is authentic.

    5. The so-called "Photoshopping experts" who have criticized the images they've seen of the birth certificate are not experts and do not know what they are talking about.

    6. The President spent a couple of thousand dollars defending himself again nuisance suits brought by Orly Taitz and her minions. The million dollars in legal fees concerned his presidential campaign in 2008.

    7. No, he hasn't botched his birthday.

    8. You need to stop reading birther sites before you make yourself look even sillier than you already have.

It is nice to see Obama joke about those that believe the fear, uncertainty and doubt that conservatives have been taught to believe over the past few years. He could still lose in the fall, because advertising works. For the republican party, it is about power, more than about what is best for the country. Win at all costs – and if that means feeding the trolls (Birthers, tea-partiers, evangelicers, hawks, etc), that is what they will do. Democrats must shine light on the truth. Then, they will do OK.
