Conservative group hits Obama during American energy swing

(CNN) – As President Barack Obama swings through 2012 battleground states Wednesday and Thursday to highlight American-made energy, an opposing conservative group will hit the airwaves slamming what they say is an "untested and naïve" White House energy plan.

Crossroads GPS, a conservative political action group, said Wednesday it would spend $650,000 to run a 30-second ad in New Mexico, Ohio and Nevada to coincide with Obama's energy tour. All three states are considered battlegrounds in November's general election. Obama is also stopping in Oklahoma, a state that votes solidly Republican.

The ad, called "Deflect," lists Obama administration decisions it asserts have contributed to the increase in the cost of energy.

"President Obama's administration restricted oil production in the gulf, limited development of American oil shale, and President Obama personally lobbied to kill a pipeline to bring oil from Canada," the ad states.

It concludes, "The president's playing politics. Tell President Obama bad energy policies mean energy prices we can't afford."

On his tour, Obama plans to announce in Cushing, Oklahoma, that his administration will expedite the permit for the southern half of the Keystone XL pipeline. In January, the Obama administration denied a permit for the 1,700-mile-long Keystone XL oil pipeline, which would stretch from Canada's tar sands development to the U.S. Gulf Coast.

The president of Crossroads GPS said the White House was ignoring important sources of American energy in the pursuit of untested technology.

"Instead of delivering practical solutions to make energy more affordable, President Obama is pursuing restrictive and naïve policies that are hurting families at the pump and in their utility bills," Crossroads GPS president Steven Law said. "There are plenty of supply-boosting solutions Obama could adopt immediately, but he remains obsessed with impractical sideshows like algae and Solyndra business schemes."

Everyone with a working brain knows that oil speculators on Wall Street (in part driven by all this "go to war with Iran" nonsense the GOP is spouting) have a HUGE effect on oil prices. BTW, if these speculators had to actually take possession of the oil they are "buying," and incur those very real costs, they might be less tempted to play the market so recklessly.

And this Keystone pipeline crap? According to the Christian Science Monitor, "oil supplies aren’t being squeezed. Over 80 percent of America’s energy needs are now being satisfied by domestic supplies. In fact, we’re starting to become an energy exporter. Demand for oil isn’t rising in any event. Demand is down in the U.S. compared to last year at this time, and global demand is still moderate given the economic slowdowns in Europe and China. "

This noise about gas prices is just a way to try to keep voters from accepting that all of the GOP's economic, military and foreign policies are PROVEN FAILURES.

No matter how hard these fascists republicans try, they're financiers at ExxonMobil are not going to convince a vast majority of American people that their pipeline is the way to prosperity and lead to "hundreds of thousands" jobs as their false ads suggest.

A nation can survive its fools, and even the ambitious. But it cannot survive treason from within. An enemy at the gates is less formidable, for he is known and carries his banner openly.

But the traitor moves amongst those within the gate freely, his sly whispers rustling through all the alleys, heard in the very halls of government itself.

For the traitor appears not a traitor; he speaks in accents familiar to his victims, and he wears their face and their arguments, he appeals to the baseness that lies deep in the hearts of all men.

He rots the soul of a nation, he works secretly and unknown in the night to undermine the pillars of the city, he infects the body politic so that it can no longer resist. A murderer is less to fear.

Crossroads GPS is run by Karl Rove, who I think was working for Fox so-called "News" back in the summer of 2008 when the average U.S. gasoline price hit a record high of $4.11.

At that time Fox "News" said (talking points made by O'Reilly, among others), that "no President has the power to increase or to lower gas prices" and the only way to reduce our vulnerability to gas price spikes is to use less oil.

BTW, regarding domestic oil production, when GW Bush took office in 2001, the US was producing about 5.8 million barrels a day; this amount steadily declined under Bush to the point that when he left office in 2008, we were down to about 5 million barrels a day.

When President Obama took office, production immediately began to rise, and we're currently back up to about 5.8 million barrels a day again.

But, hey, Crossroads GPS, don't let the FACTS get in the way of you spewing lies!

@Taran: "A nation can survive its fools, and even the ambitious. But it cannot survive treason from within. An enemy at the gates is less formidable, for he is known and carries his banner openly. ..."

Excellent quote – and I'm assuming you are referring to Karl Rove and the GOP. With their Citizens United ruling (brought before the Supreme Court by Chief Justice John Roberts in an unprecedented move, resulting in the overturning of 100 years of legal precedence), the GOP is now being funded by multi-national billionaires and foreign corporations and entities who may not have the best interest of our country at heart.

Because why should an enemy of the US bother with bombing us when they can just buy off Republican politicians and judges and destroy us from within?

Traitors killed Caesar albeit he was a tyrant right in the Roman Forum. Brutus said "he was ambitous." So are you suggesting that just because a leader has sets high goals for the nation, that somehow he/she is working against the interest of the country?

We are going to become a nation of have and have not. You have super packs distorting the facts you have republicans trying to scare people thinking the world is coming an end. You have the likes Paul Ryan and Mitch McConnor is willing to let this country go down then support the President. You have Mitt who would do and say anything just to win. We have Black and White folks starting to hate one another like they did in the sixty. If this continue down this path we are going to be in very sad place. Lets united and stand for all. The President is doing the best job he can with the tools he have, if we don't stand for nothing let stand for country first. And that what President have been saying and stressing!

Consevative morons (or maroons?) like to lie about oil. Prices are set by OPEC and Commodity Traders hording Oil futures. "Financier" Romney and the Conservative Squids know this. However, there are enough true morons among the Conservative zomby followers who will believe whatever FOX tells them. Not much anyone can do about that – except hope they die young by refusing to go to any "socialist" doctors for their healthcare.

For the rest of us the bestg solution is to put restrictions on Oil speculation, and to DEMAND that any oil that flows through the Keystone pipeline is restricted to American use only. Tell the Right wing to put that in their pipe and smoke it!

who was the ones that tried to block the auto mobile gas efficiency from going to 50 miles a gallon; owh the repubs did, who was the ones that are blocking the keystone oil pipeline oil to go to the american consumers; owh the repubs are, who are the ones that are warmungering against iran so that they cut their oil supplies to europe; owh the repubs did, which administration is pushing more oil that decades; and even start exporting oil, owh the dems are. what are these conservative doing by blocking every thing the dems tries to do with green energy so that we can save our earth and give big oil some competition so they can stop raping the american people, just because they know repubs will scream free market if obama tries to prosecute the speculators. lesson you repubs keep trying to destroy our recovery just for politics sake, and you will find out how gullible you think most americans are, hey hint, its not all that it seems.

The GOP and much of the media cherry picked the coverage of the Keystone deal. If they had really checked the facts, the President never cancelled the Keystone pipeline at all. He just did not approve the route that was proposed and there were many good reasons for that. Perhaps the biggest reason was that the REPUBLICAN governor of Nebraska refused to have it go through his state. Funny how the Republicans never mention that. The oil company was told to go back and come up with a better and safer route for the northern section of the pipeline. That just seems like a common sense to me. Allowing the southern part to go on if it does not clash with the environmental concerns and is not refused by the states involved also seems pretty sensible. Why don't people take a deep breath, do some fact checking and make intelligent, truthful comments about the whole situation?
