Obama says Romney's 'pretending'

(CNN) - Mitt Romney is "pretending" the health care plan he instituted in Massachusetts is different than the national plan, President Barack Obama said.

In an interview with Public Radio International that aired Thursday, Obama pointed to the similarities between the two plans, without mentioning the Republican frontrunner by name.

"We designed a program that actually previously had support of Republicans, including the person who may end up being the Republican standard bearer and is now pretending like he came up with something different," the president said.

The Massachusetts plan served as a model for the Affordable Care Act, signed two years ago Friday. Romney, the state's former governor, has since said the legislation was the correct course for his state but not meant as a model for a national overhaul. But the plan has proved a focal point of criticism aimed at the GOP frontrunner.

In Thursday's interview, Obama said Republican opposition to the plan, including the Supreme Court challenge, is politically motivated.

He said state governors will have a difficult time explaining resistance to the law to their constituents.

"When people see that in fact it works, it makes sense – as it's, by the way, working in Massachusetts – then I think a whole bunch of folks will say 'Why aren't we trying it as well?'" Obama said.

The Supreme Court is expected to hear oral arguments next week over the individual mandate provision in the law. In their opposition to the legislation, some Republican governors have refused to implement the terms until the Supreme Court rules.

Responding to the president's comments, Romney spokesperson Andrea Saul reaffirmed her candidate's plan to repeal "Obamacare ... on day one."

"Mitt Romney has always believed each state should be able to fashion their own health care reforms and, as president, he would replace Obamacare with free-market reforms that promote competition and lower health care costs," Saul said in an email.

Independent: It looks like an education would be helpful as well. Problem is, as is with all partial debates, Romney DID suggest that the way HIS healthplan could save money is to take it national. Romney supported a national health care plan....before he didn't. Etch away, Mitt.

The SCOTUS can only decide in Pres. Obama's favor. Not doing so would be partisan legislating from the bench. The Commerce Clause gives the government broad powers to regulate the economy in ways that best serve The People. Right now, people not having health insurance places an extra cost burden on the people who do have it. It is the same argument you always make about you paying extra taxes because nearly half of the people pay no taxes.

Besides, there have been countless precedente on this question making you purchase or pay for something.. The question was first resolved when governmetn started charging and collecting taxes. They make you buy vaccines for your kids. They make office building owners purchase sprinklers and alarm systems.

The argument is already moot. The same arguments were made for Romneycare. Guess how that turned out. But, we all know that Republicans are stubborn and like theater and drama. So, off to the SCOTUS

I get tired of hearing how good this health plan is, if it is that good, then why do Congress and the President get the opition to opt out.

Don't become facetious. Forced labor is called slavery. That's already been outlawed. You cannot force a business to hire people that they do not need. But, you can force a business to buy a sprinkler system for their office building.

I guess it's a good thing DAY ONE will never come then. Cry all you want that it's not fair or unconstitutional but I'm tired of paying for everyone who either can't pay or won't pay their hospital bills. If you can't afford to pay for a Doctor then DON'T GO TO ONE.

"So according to Democrats/liberals/progressives/communists the commerce clause gives the federal government the right to force you to do ANYTHING it wants. THIS is why these people need to be removed from office."

The FBI's new standard for rape is "penetration of the body against a person's will". Based on this definition those vaginal probes you wingnuts support (the law here in Texas) is rape of the women forced to endure the procedure. Is that in the Constitution?

hahahaha... Yes, it's a slam dunk for Obama Rudy. I can hardly wait until Obama GETS slam dunked and the whole law gets the boot. And Democrats/liberals/progressives ALWAYS say this when the Constitution is upheld and not twisted to concoct new rights for the federal government where none were granted by the People.

And as I've said, EITHER WAY Obama loses BIG TIME. If it is not ruled unconstitutional, then it will result in the near extinction of the Democrat party. Only lefties from places like San Francisco will be left in office. So I am a bit torn on how I would like to see them rule on this. Have Obama and the Democrats ruled UNCONSTITUTIONAL or have them run into extinction in the 2012 elections? Decisions, decisions....

@Truth, Romney is smarter than Obama in his and your dreams only. I know that you are prejudice because all of your comments are about food stamps as if white people do not use them. You need to grow a pair and quit hiding behind the KKK. Obama is educated and smarter than your flip-flopper. You did not or could not read the article on Romney's life. His college buddies called him the teacher's pet so you know what that means. He sucks up to anyone to get his way. Romney is nothing but a spineless, rich man with no convictions like you. He expects everything to be given to him because of his money. The only reason he is your nominee is because he was the next person in line to get the nomination, definitely not because he is smart. See this is how you republicans roll. You will vote only for the next person who is in line to be crowned king, democrats vote for the one who is ready for the job. We just don't vote to get along. You know as well as everyone else that none of your candidates are even remotely ready to be president of the United States. Looks like you'll need to bring the Zebra on the national stage in August. I am quite sure he will get your vote if he can get the black man out of the white house. You are a sorry excuse for a human being.

All those opposed to ACA should go to washington and demand it to be repealed. And all those for it should go to washington and block them.

So if the federal government can force us to buy health insurance why can't it also force us to buy unemployment insurance? Sounds like a damn good idea right? I mean the federal government can force us to buy insurance for EVERYTHING so that we are covered for all the bad things that might happen. Yes, forced insurance purchase for ALL!!

(gotta go buy some stock in insurance companies!)

Have American voters read President Obama's healthcare bill, I haven't and Republicans know that. When I read the bill then I will voice my opinion, until then I won't depend on Republicans to tell me how bad it is because they haven't read it through and through, they just did a "cherry picking" of what they want Americans to believe about the bill.
