Romney: Women should be allowed to join Augusta

(CNN) - Mitt Romney on Thursday added his voice to the chorus calling for women to be allowed to join Augusta National Golf Club.

When asked if women should be admitted, the Republican presidential frontrunner responded: "Of course."

"I am not a member of Augusta. I don't know if I would qualify. My golf game is not that good," Romney told reporters after an energy-themed event in Tunkhannock, Pennsylvania. "Certainly if I were a member, if I could run Augusta, which isn't likely to happen, of course I'd have women into Augusta."

Earlier Thursday, White House Press Secretary Jay Carney said President Barack Obama's "personal opinion is women should be admitted."

The private Georgia golf club, which hosts the Masters Tournament that started Thursday, has not allowed women members since it opened in 1933.

The debate landed in the national spotlight recently because IBM, the tournament's sponsor, has a new female CEO, Virginia Rometty, and the club has always extended membership to the company's officers. Rometty has not stated publicly whether she is interested in club membership.

Critics have called on August National to offer Rometty its traditional jacket, while Augusta's chairman has dodged the prickly issue of female membership.

"All issues of membership are now and have historically been subject to the private deliberation of members," Billy Payne said Wednesday.

Although no women are thought to be members, they are allowed to play the course as guests.

- CNN's Peter Hamby and Emanuella Grinberg contributed to this report.

Too little too late Romney. Women are much smarter than you think. You say anything to get a vote. You will never be President Obama so please stop trying and continue being your out of touch with reality self.

Romney and Obama need to stay out of this. Nothing good can come for men & women to share a club except trouble for their spouses. Why do women want to join a men's club when we ourselves don't want men in our clubs? Seriously, these must women looking for a husband. So women can play as guests, why be members? If men have to accept women in their clubs that only means we will have to accept men in our clubs, there goes our privacy, our time to ourselves with no husbands, no kids.

Who the heck cares?!!! Just Obama trying to glom onto anything he can to push his fallacious "war on women" propaganda. While we're at it, let's make women perfectly equal and let them compete with men on the course. No more seperate mens/womens tournaments.

"If I could run Augusta" indeed, Mitt. Goodness but this man's ego is astonishing to behold. Makes you wonder just what type of Bishop he was (or still is?) in his church.

Too little, too late Willard. Women in this country are ON to you and are turning you OFF fast.

This guy is just like a male _rostitute. He'll take it anyway he can to make a buck and won't ask any questions. He's also the only candidate to ever run whose willing to give it to you any way you ask. What a scumbag he is. He should stick to being "unemployed" and building BIGGER mansions and let our president continue cleaning up the mess he inherited.

Carney was answering a question about it. It's not like he just randomly decided to start spewing off-topic talking points. Grow the hell up dude. Seriously. You're just going to give yourself heart problems later in life living in such a cloud of faux outrage.

And for Mittens, as I said in another post, this is just the beginning of what will become several months of Mittens trying desperately to match Obama tit-for-tat. He's already trying to play the "we're not that different" game by projecting all his own faults and foibles and the things he's most criticized for (i.e. flip-floppery and saying whatever he thinks the immediate audience wants to hear) onto Obama. This will be complemented of course by things like this, where he tres to neutralize their stark differences by taking the same position AFTER Obama takes one. As it is, Mittens spent time earlier today criticizing Obama for spending "too much time at Harvard"...despite Mittens having himself spent longer there, sent his children there and donated over $50K to the place.

I guess Romney is moving into the Etch A Sketch phase of his campaign, too late! Women know what you are about and they are not going to support your lies!

Once again, Romney will say anything to get a vote. I don't know how anyone in their right mind could vote for this man. On another note, President Obama has never had a war on women. He's been supporting women since day one.

Just because we women cannot compete with men on the same course that does not make us less equal. There comes a time when men want to compete with men, we women get to watch them and then women can compete with women and men can watch us. Seriously, how pathetic are these women that they think that we women are not equal to men because men want to play among themselves. Either these girls have some serious insecurity problems or they are looking for a husband.

And it continues. Expect the next few months to be repleat with Mittens atking a position that is the same or similar to Obama's AFTER Obama takes his. Mittens is desperate to narrow the gap and neutralize what a really glaring differences in hopes he can gain more independent voters that way, appearing more moderate etc. It will happen in particular with issues like this, where the GOP/Teatrolls have done themselves and their nominee horrible damage pushing their social/domestic policy agenda. Mittens has already been trying this week to close the differences between him and Obama in a far less subtle manner as well, projecting all his own most famous and hotly criticized faults and foibles onto Obama (i.e., that he's a flip flopping panderer and says whatever he thinks the immediate audience wants to hear). Reality is, Mittens is shaking the Etch-A-Sketch and trying to make the icture as blurry as possible...not trying to sketch a whole new one. It's his only hope.

Of course he's going to agree with the President until he gets chastised from the right. Let's not forget that this guy has a gender gap problem. Women just don't like him. Willard is a country club 1%er. Deep down inside, he agrees with Augusta.

Give me a break. Obama has used every opportunity to jump in front of the cameras and microphone to weigh in on every ridiculous local matter he could. Is it any wonder these stupid questions get asked? Like this country has nothing better to discuss. Obama has cheapened the presidency and turned it into a joke. The correct response would have been "we have no comment, next question".

I seem to recall a past issue with Augusta membership 10-15 years ago. I had thought it was about women, and that they had resolved it. But, now I recollect that it was over admitting black members. I think it was the same year that Tiger won the tournament by a record umpteen strokes, and then they "Tiger-Proofed" the course the next year.

Doesn't sound like a woman hater to me. Still, I am sure the DNC is working up a list of other "issues" they can make campaign infomercials about to try and deflect away from the real issue. The Economy. This is where both Obama and the Senate lose.

Obama answered YES to win the female vote. Romney answered YES to win the female vote. Wow, 2 men chasing after the female vote. And obviously they know we women are dumb enough to fall for it like this is the only thing we have on our minds. How about Jobs??????? financial stability??????? kids' education????? putting a meal on the table?????? making ends meat??????? paying bills????? gas prices??????? our elderly parents which we women end up looking after since our male brothers do not get involved??????
