Gingrich: Santorum ran 'remarkable campaign'

(CNN) - Republican presidential candidate Newt Gingrich wasted no time going after Rick Santorum's backers on Tuesday, following his opponent's decision to end to his White House bid.

"I humbly ask Senator Santorum's supporters to visit Newt.org to review my conservative record and join us as we bring these values to Tampa," Gingrich said in a statement. "We know well that only a conservative can protect life, defend the Constitution, restore jobs and growth and return to a balanced budget."

Gingrich commended Santorum on his presidential run, saying the former Pennsylvania senator "waged a remarkable campaign."

"His success is a testament to his tenacity and the power of conservative principles," Gingrich said.

The former House speaker repeated his promise to stay in the race until the nomination is clinched, even if that means taking it to the national convention in August.

"I am committed to staying in this race all the way to Tampa so that the conservative movement has a real choice," he said.

It will be funny if Ron Paul comes in second in the races ahead. That should send the memo Newt didn't read yet.

News to Newt, if you don't win 5 states you can't even be on the first ballot at a contested convention. Good luck with your pipe dream of this somehow getting past that point (with on Romney on the ballot) to a brokered convention.
