On Gingrich, Cain jumps ship for Romney

(CNN) - Once the dynamic duo, Herman Cain has dropped his support for Newt Gingrich, saying on Monday it was time for the GOP presidential candidate to abandon his quest for more delegates.

"To Newt Gingrich I would say, 'Speaker Gingrich, with all due respect, let's get on with this, OK?'" the former White House hopeful said in a radio interview with WMAL in Washington.

He added: "I even endorsed Newt Gingrich at one point because I thought he had a shot. Well, not now. He doesn't have a shot."

He now says he will support the presumptive Republican nominee Mitt Romney.

Cain announced his official support for Gingrich January 28, nearly two months after suspending his campaign. At the time, Gingrich had surged ahead in the GOP horse race after winning the South Carolina primary, but was facing a bitter fight against Romney ahead of Florida's contest.

At an event announcing his endorsement in the Sunshine State, Cain said he was backing Gingrich because the former speaker's policies most closely lined up with his own.

"Speaker Gingrich is not afraid of bold ideas, and I also know that Speaker Gingrich is running for president and going through this sausage grinder. I know what this sausage grinder is all about. I know that he is going through this sausage grinder because he cares about the future of the United States of America," Cain said in January.

Days later, Gingrich came in second place to Romney in Florida, marking a turning point in the former speaker's campaign that took him back down in the polls.

On Monday, Cain said Gingrich has yet to regain ground in the race and expressed he was ready to stand with another one of his former rivals and the all-but-certain Republican nominee.

"With all the criticism that other opponents during the Republican primary have thrown at him, (Romney) is still better than Barack Obama," Cain said. "So I will still support Mitt Romney."

Gingrich, meanwhile, has repeatedly maintained he'll stay in the race until Romney clinches the 1,144 delegates needed to secure the nomination.

  2. The REAL Truth.. (not the imposter)

@WiredweirdinSF – And we still have the unreported (at least in the liberal mainstream media) of Debby Wasserman Schultz shrilly hounding Romeny to release his tax return, but refusing to release her own. Very flagrant democrat liberal hypocrisy, aided and abetted by the liberally biased mainstream media.

OMG!! How many times do you need to post this? At least 6 times I've read it today. Word .. Debbie is NOT running for President, or a party nomination. If you don't like that she hasn't released her tax returns, go tell her. We don't care. We care about potential presidential candidates returns. Capice?

Just stating the obvious at this point. Newt's been out of the race for a while. He needs to start rowing the Romney boat at this point. His sunk long time ago.

When President Obama wins re-election in November, Herman Cain will then come out and endorse him. Seems like he's endorsed everyone on the Republican ticket so far (even himself). I can't imgaine he would pass up an opportunity to get his name in the news again – so it will be President Obama that he endorses next.

Mr. Cain – We don't care who you endorse. We don't care about you, your phony campaign or your endorsements. You are irrelevant and it's about time you wake up and realize it. Take your buddy Newt to realization camp with you. Seems he lives in a wonderland too!
