Romney cites 'vast left wing conspiracy'

(CNN) – Speaking to a right wing radio host Tuesday, likely GOP presidential nominee Mitt Romney repurposed a phrase from Hillary Clinton, citing a "vast left wing conspiracy" brewing in the media and liberal advocacy organizations to derail his campaign.

Romney was making an appearance on Breitbart TV and was asked by host Larry O'Connor whether he was ready to take on "the media and these nonprofits groups that are working together."

"There will be an effort by the quote vast left wing conspiracy to work together to put out their message and to attack me," Romney said in response. "They're going to do everything they can to divert from the message people care about, which is a growing economy that creates more jobs and rising incomes. That's what people care about."

Romney's choice of words echoes Clinton's assertion in 1998 that a "vast right wing conspiracy" was behind the sexual harassment charges her husband, former President Bill Clinton, was facing at the time.

"I mean, look at the very people who are involved in this – they have popped up in other settings," Clinton, now the U.S. secretary of state, said on NBC's "Today" in 1998. "This is – the great story here for anybody willing to find it and write about it and explain it is this vast right-wing conspiracy that has been conspiring against my husband since the day he announced for president."

Romney said dealing with journalists, many of whom he said were biased, was a perpetual problem for Republicans.

"Many in the media are inclined to do the president's bidding and I know that's an uphill battle we fight with the media generally," Romney said, before praising O'Connor for offering a conservative voice.

The candidate said he was unfazed by the prospect of doing battle with the left's vast operation.

"Democrats know that given the president's record over the last three years they cannot run on that record," Romney said. "They will make this race about anything but the president's record and the economy."

Oh Mitt who knew you were so funny. Did Santorum have it wrong, Fox been shilling for you all along. Democrats are happy to run on the President record against your job killing days at Bain anytime. Perhaps if you told us some of your ideas to turn the country around, so far all we've heard is you intent to undo President Obama's presidency. So tell us Mitt How are you going to get the party of No to fix the mess they took 8 years to create. How will you fix the economy while giving your fat cat buddy free rein and tax break to ship American jobs overseas. Please check with Ann before you undo the Ledbetter Act, start another war we can't pay for, kill the auto industry,, throw people out of their homes to benefit your real estate buddies, or re-baptize Osama Bin Laden some of us may not want those changes.

Maybe Romney needs Ted Nugent to handle his media. Since Romney is so tight with the NRA, Nugent sits on their Board of Directors, supports Romney, and he now appears to be a domestic terrorist threatening the life of the President of the United States, he's obviously appears committed to the Republican ideology!

Romney has not learned that the media does not work for him. He is not at Bain anymore and the media does not have to kiss his behind to keep their jobs.

@Truth – "You have to be delusional to not admit that most of the MSM is liberal and favoring the Democrats"
Most people in the media are intelligent, and intelligence has a liberal bias. Funny, but the truth (the actual truth) also has a liberal bias. Your elephant dung (to borrow a phrase) is just pure......

Don't know about a "vast left wing conspiracy", but he was defintiely attacked by a "vast ultra right -wing conspiracy".

LOL! I think that attacks from the right will have hurt him more, in the long run.

Can't wait for the debates with President Obama. Romney will be so tongue twisted. He won't be able to remember all that he has flip- flopped on. Also he will have to reveal his policies not just condemn President Obama's ones.

@JohnW – Santorum WAS the nutjob... along with Bachmann, Cain, Perry, Palin, Trump, and Gingrich – a regular three-ring circus.

Mitt – your "vast left wing conspiracy" is going to go right out the window just like Clinton's did. There's no conspiracy – just an inadequate candidate vying for a job he is not qualified to do.

This is going to be interesting. The hard right wing has had a favorite son, or Michelle, at the top of the polls throughout the entire primary season. They have been well fed. Now that everyone has all but dropped out, the duty of feeding the hard right has fallen on Mitt Romney. This is going to be interesting.

Isn't Breitbart TV part of the vast right wing conspiracy? A bit disingenuous to complain about one when you are under the roof of another. I guess conspirators and those who would actively deceive are okay when they are you conspirators and deceivers. Ah, gotta love politics in America – if it isn't ugly, if it isn't a smear tactic, then it just isn't American (oh, and nice thing to teach our kids, too).

Oh seriously – a vast left wing conspiracy against Romney? It's called a political campaign! Get a grip, Mitt – you have a LONG way to go in the political season.

  19. Another Day in the Idiot Mines

Rmoney the Robot is clearly running the "Blame the liberal media" loop that Rove uploaded. Of course, that crazy myth was debunked years ago and even Republicans admitted making up the claim to stir up their base. The fact is, from now until Election Day, every single Sunday morning show will have GOBP cult members outnumbering the other guests by 2 or 3 to 1. Watch and see for yourself. The corporatist media cozies up to the big money every day. It will continue to do so this year.

They have medications for paranoid delusions, you know. Perhaps the Changeling needs some.'s one thing for the wife or surrogate to be making those kinds of comments, but another entirely for it to come out of the mouth of the guy trying to become POTUS. But thanks for he false equivalency anyway, CNN.

  21. The REAL Truth.. (not the imposter)

@The Real Truth and Nothing But the The Real Truth – "The MSM and Hollywood is in the bag for Obama, just like they were in 2008. I mean they can't admit their mistake so they have to double down on failure. Fortunately the vast majority of Americans have been paying attention, especially the 20 million that Obama has kept unemployed."
Seriously rolling in the aisles with this one goober. The only mistake Obama has made was believing that the GOP might actually work with him to get something done over the last 3 yrs. Look how that worked out. No budget. Down-graded debt rating. ACA being reviewed by the bought-and-paid-for SCOTUS. All of this from the party whose 4yr goal was to make the POTUS a one-term president. Icebergs (and the good of the country be darned), full steam ahead GOBP.
Kind of hard for anyone to make progress with that going on don't you think. Oh. Silly me. I forgot. You don't think. You get your spoutrage from Faux Noise.

Romney is just pandering, like he's done since day one. The man has done anything and said everything to get the nomination, but the fact is the ONLY reasons he'll get it are money and organization. That's the sad state of American politics, my friends, and we're culpable because we have allowed it, even feeding the beast. The big news isn't policy or governance, it's sound bites and campaign coffers. And we have allowed it. Don't believe me? Answer these two questions to yourself: 1) What is Romney's position on the home mortgage tax credit? 2) who has raised more, Obama or Romney? I'll throw in a tiebreaker: What femail tennis star recently made headlines for getting a haircut?

Not good that Romney is sounding a lot more like Palin, Bachmann, Santorum, and Cain. Is it mass hysteria or a disease spreading among GOP/Tea Party candidates?

Romney only originality is HIS Romneycare plan which Obama's is similar to. I guess if the Supreme Court strikes down Obamacare, Mitts plan is doomed also. So, people of Massachusetts, be prepared.

Hey Mitt, must be nice to have Ted Nugent out addressing all the parinoid gun owners who think the government is out to take their weapons away....Ain't Gonna Happen!

Relax people, your gonna need your guns to go hunting for food after Mitt is elected (NOT) andyour looking for a way to survive.
