Romney cites 'vast left wing conspiracy'

(CNN) – Speaking to a right wing radio host Tuesday, likely GOP presidential nominee Mitt Romney repurposed a phrase from Hillary Clinton, citing a "vast left wing conspiracy" brewing in the media and liberal advocacy organizations to derail his campaign.

Romney was making an appearance on Breitbart TV and was asked by host Larry O'Connor whether he was ready to take on "the media and these nonprofits groups that are working together."

"There will be an effort by the quote vast left wing conspiracy to work together to put out their message and to attack me," Romney said in response. "They're going to do everything they can to divert from the message people care about, which is a growing economy that creates more jobs and rising incomes. That's what people care about."

Romney's choice of words echoes Clinton's assertion in 1998 that a "vast right wing conspiracy" was behind the sexual harassment charges her husband, former President Bill Clinton, was facing at the time.

"I mean, look at the very people who are involved in this – they have popped up in other settings," Clinton, now the U.S. secretary of state, said on NBC's "Today" in 1998. "This is – the great story here for anybody willing to find it and write about it and explain it is this vast right-wing conspiracy that has been conspiring against my husband since the day he announced for president."

Romney said dealing with journalists, many of whom he said were biased, was a perpetual problem for Republicans.

"Many in the media are inclined to do the president's bidding and I know that's an uphill battle we fight with the media generally," Romney said, before praising O'Connor for offering a conservative voice.

The candidate said he was unfazed by the prospect of doing battle with the left's vast operation.

"Democrats know that given the president's record over the last three years they cannot run on that record," Romney said. "They will make this race about anything but the president's record and the economy."

you people are all in for a terribly depressing and, from what I'm reading, very shocking November. This President has absolutely zero chance of being re-elected. In fact, Romney, who doesn't impress me at all so I don't consider this welcome news at all, will crush Obama. Things have simply gotten too bad the last four years. Even if its not the fault of President Obama, which is mostly is, that's just the way politics goes in this country. He will be soundly defeated, sorry.

Reading some of these comments...makes me sad... are people THAT ignorant and don't see the quasi-official alliance between the media and the Democrat party? The ONE time the media actually interviewed themselves on who they voted for in 1992, 89% said they voted for Clinton..EIGHT-NINE percent? Do ANY of you lefties not see a PROBLEM with this? Most likely not....Here's another line...back in 1972, Bernie Goldberg tells a story that after the Nixon landslide, news reporters in the CBS news room were lamenting the results... Bernie asked one of them, why they were surprised by the results. And they said..."I don't know of ANYBODY that voted for Nixon!". Once again, for you lefties on this you SEE the problem here? Naaaahhh....ya' don'!

@Mikey: "Obama will win reelection and he will do it by running on his record – not your fake one, but his real one."

I know I've posted this before, but it bears repeating:
The GOP is doing everything they can to suppress the vote, from changing voter registration deadlines to exclude college students, to demanding photo ID where none were required in the past. It is absolutely necessary for every Independent, Democrat and thinking Republican to GET OUT AND VOTE FOR PRESIDENT OBAMA in November 2012.

The responses on this are funny, anyone who cannot see the extreme bias in the main stream media is so far left themselves, they are willing to accept coordinated propaganda by this administration as "free press."

Figure it out folks, or you will find yourselves in serfdom very soon.

There is no vast left wing conspiracy.

99% of media is leftist and needs no conspiracy to do its Obamessiah's bidding.

Fear the wrath of thy Obamessiah.

    Behold his mighty Newport-stained hand.

Obama's propaganda running dogs aren't content to spread lies and shill for the Democrat party, they also want to silence all the voices on the right, such as Rush LImbaugh's.

But free speech is a potent disinfectant for the Obammunist stain on America.

Telling isn't it. The left wingers rail against FOX. Why don't they rail against the rest of the networks? Because the rest are LIBs! When the head of our nation tells a reporter that his job is to scout locations for Manchelle to take her vacations, you know you are whipped.
When BOjr. makes millions off a book that tells the world his daddy was a Kenyan and never became a citizen, we are told he is eligible. Right. Go back to Chicago and see why you and Manchelle were stripped of your law license in 1994.

You libs are a joke, you gave the keys to the house to a man you new nothing about, a community organizer- great vote. but he has great people like yourselves, Bill Ayers, his classy wife Bernardine Dohrn, Rosie O'Donnell, Al Sharpton, Al Franken, Jesse Jackson, Bill Maher who calls women the C word and gives 1 million to Obama, another classy move, it goes on and on. you had a Democratic Senate and Congress for over 2 years and got nothing done but Nancy Pelosi's you have to pass it before you can see it Obamacare, another one of your more inteligent votes. 70% of doctors now say Obamacare will do way more harm then good. you all should be so proud.but you cry about Romney who we know a heck of alot more about. I think

Like with Diane Sawyer's interview where she asked him hard ball questions after talking about singing and vacations with the fraud in chief. No matter how lost in the hoppy changee thing one is the economy is still close to catastrophic, Inflation is wild, they are playing with numbers, unemployment is a nightmare, they are playing with numbers and the deficit is a nuclear disaster. The media won't be able to fool the smarter people again, fool me once shame on you fool me twice shame on me. You can't interview BO about singing and grill MR, American won't stand for that kind of dishonesty by the media again.

Way to go Mitt finally someone has the brass ones to call the media out on their dupicity. What ever happened to trusting the meida would just give us the facts and let us decide what they ment. At least now we know our next administration will be honest with the people. With the resurgance of the conservative movement we will get this country back on track. We need to trade the phony hope and change for A Return to Greatness.

In 7 short years we will spend more on interest only payments on our debt than we do on our entire military budget. The Democratic controlled Senate has not passed a budget in over 3 years. No country in the history of the world has ever recovered from the financial situation we are in and all the masses can do is call names while shoving their heads back in the sand. Romney is a bad guy why? Because he's successful? Because he thinks handing out free rubbers is bad fiscal policy? How does one say "Corporations are bad" and "we need jobs" out of the same mouth? When did the American dream become a sin and a political liability? I'll tell you, when 52% of the population decided they'd rather sit on their collective asses and vote for more free stuff while their neighbor works to provide it for them.

The next election we will be saying "obama's fault" Romney may be the right man for the job since the media tried so hard to push mccain on the voters in 08. Seems the media is trashing Romney because they don't know how to report the truth. Wonder what they would be saying if there were no more elections...just a dictatorship. If you really want to get the truth go to news groups outside the U.S. Got to go...time to pick up the kids, head to the grocery store, try to figure out if I can buy groceries and fill up the car. Thank you Mr. President!

It's only a conspiracy if everyone else doesn't see it. Everyone does see it. Which is why their collective ratings are garbage compared to Fox News. We're sick of being lied to. We're not stupid. The elite media take this country for a bunch of idiots.

there is a vast right wing conspiracy at work as well Mitt. It's called FoxNews and anything Karl Rove and the Koch Brothers are affiliated with. And even though deep down they really don't like you, they are going to hold their noses and support you because they hate Obama even more
