Romney: Obama should 'suck it up'

(CNN) - Mitt Romney drew new contrasts with President Barack Obama on Wednesday by targeting the president's fondness for golf and vacations with his family.

The presumptive Republican presidential nominee said Obama's golf trips make him "scratch his head."

"I must admit, I scratch my head at the capacity of the president to take four hours off on such a regular basis to go golfing," Romney told WLW Radio in Cincinnati, responding to a question about the president's hobbies. "I would think you could kind of suck it up for four years particularly when the American people are out of work."

When asked about vacations taken by the Obama family, who travel to the president's native Hawaii annually, Romney said his family would not use four or eight years in the White House to "see the world." Instead, the former Massachusetts governor said he would frequent Camp David, the presidential retreat in the Catoctin Mountain Park of Frederick County, Maryland.

"I think one of the great resources that the president enjoys is Camp David," Romney said, after the host referenced a recent trip by Obama's eldest daughter Malia to Mexico. "I would anticipate if I were fortunate enough to become elected president that I'd be spending some time at Camp David, and my family and I would not be jetting around the world and using four years in office to see the world."

Obama has admittedly not used the grounds as much as his predecessors but is scheduled to host the G-8 summit there in May.

"Somebody pointed out that I hadn't had any of my counterparts, who I've worked with now for three years, up to Camp David," Obama told reporters in March. "I think that the weather should be good that time of year."

Team Obama did not immediately respond to a request for comment following Romney's interview.

@stephiphie, not wasting my time looking for the page, most of us get one or two weeks of vacation while congress gets a paid holiday, like most of us, and sat least a whole week not just a day!

It's got to be the hardest job in the world. And even when on vacation, the President is never entirely on vacation. Briefings every day, aides nearby, information flowing. Starting every day early and ending late. I don't begrudge him some time to recharge, and I find it hard to believe that if Mitt wins, he'll only vacation at Camp David. I guess this is the best Mitt can do, since the argument that everything is worse under President Obama doesn't actually stand up to scrutiny.

I didn't like Bush, and the last thing I had any issues with were his vacation time. And he took a lot of it. He's got the most stressful job arguably in the world. If no President took a day off, they'd drop dead. Same reason the rest of us take days off, attend sporting events, go on vacation. To get away. Obama just wants to get away from people like Mitt Romney who say stupid things.

This guy has a car elevator. He lives the life of luxury. He shouldn't be talking.

I'd be careful Mr Romney! Republican Presidents hold the record for the most vacation time vs any Democrat. You might want to research before putting your silver foot in your mouth.

Well bcm – it appears that everything is a non-issue when it pertains to a Democrat – but the same thing is a huge issue when it can be used against a Republican. Where is the screaming about gas prices today? What about unemployment? 8%....that's only the people who have looked for a job in the last four weeks...not the ones who have quit looking. What other non-issues would you like to discuss?

Nice of Mitt Romney to include the Presidential family in his public statements.
Knock another item off the Taboo list.

Romney should first tell his wife to stop saying that "she's not really wealthy" – and then he can talk about golf.

Come November, Romney is going to get beaten like a government mule.

Romney is grasping for anything to make the President look bad. Everybody, especially the President, needs some diversion every once and a while. Next thing you know he will be saying President Obama spends too much time in the bathroom.

  14. The Real Truth and Nothing But the Real Truth

The American people have been watching and listening the last 4 years. Obama has proven himself an empty suit if there ever was one. Americans abhor a failure and don't want divisive class warfare for another 4 years while there are millions unemployed. If Obama had an ounce of honor, he would have simply not run again.

This comment from a man with 5 houses, including one vacation house that he is tearing down and re-building (to the tune of $12 million) in La Jolla, CA. Souns more than a little hypocritical to me.

The president has two small kids, so you are saying that including them , they shouldn't have any vacations. It has been proved time and again that President Obama is well capable of multi tasking. And this is coming from some one as Rich as Romney . I wish Romney will not stoop to this level. It seems so so fake coming from him

Mitt Romney hasn't had a fulltime job in the last 10 years. And with his hundreds of millions sitting overseas and all that knowledge about how to create jobs and how much he loves this country and wants to help, may I ask why he's never personally started a company, put people to work, and gone to work himself every day.

The man has done nothing except prepare for a presidential run for 10 years - I think the pace of the presidency might be more than he could stand.

Condemning Romney because he's rich is just plain envy. The democrats make a big deal about how rich he is, while at the same time ignore how rich more then a few of theirs are. Hypocrites! Romney has done more for the average Joe than your hero Obama, by a long shot. Romney has actually created jobs in the private sector, donated to worthy causes for most of his life (not just when it was politically expedient), and been in public service when he had no motivation to do so other then his desire to do something for others. You people should ask yourselves if you would have been as generous with your own time and money, I'm guessing the answer would be no.

...and red isn't yours. Why the personal attacks? Do you lack facts? Here, have some of my spares.

Mitt Romney really does own vacaction homes so that he take stay at home vacations. His definition of a stay-cation is very different from what most people would think it means.
