Washington (CNN) - Newt Gingrich will officially end his bid for the Republican presidential nomination and formally express his support for Mitt Romney next week, two sources close to Gingrich tell CNN.
While details are still being worked out, Gingrich is likely to hold his final campaign event Tuesday in Washington, DC where he will make the announcement surrounded by his family and supporters.
It is not surprising that Gingrich is suspending his campaign for the White House as he has all but acknowledged it is winding down and Romney is the presumptive GOP nominee.
"When he says he is transitioning, what he means is that he is trying to determine as a citizen how he will pro-actively help Mitt Romney become president and the Republican Party win back the Senate and help (House Speaker) John Boehner keep his majority in the House," said one of the sources, who spoke on the condition of anonymity.
It appears that Gingrich's focus will be much broader than the presidential campaign, as the former speaker, who made his name and career in the House, plans to be actively involved in helping the GOP take back control of both sides of Capitol Hill.
"It is not enough to beat Barack Obama, we also have to help the Republican Party keep the majority in the House and win back the majority in the Senate," the source said.
The decision to hold the event next week was due to logistical reasons, the sources said.
oh say it's not so? The March To Tampa is over? What a clown.
Pity. I have been so looking forward to those seven three-hour debates with the President that Gingrich promised.
Love it – they drag it out to get more campaign dollars flowing into the debt ridden fiasco.
There goes the last Conservative. Knew that America couldn't support the cause, Millions of Republicants are now abandoning the ship. They cannot conceive of voting for Socialist Robmey.
So long, Newtie! It's been a hoot! The time for you to exit gracefully was months ago, but instead you just had to keep trying to massage that big ol' ego! Sad to say, you're a buffoon who doesn't know when the world is laughing at you, not with you.

I guess this goes to show just how truthful Republican politicians really are. They're not.
His so-called candidacy was a joke from the beginning. He has more baggage than Delta Airlines. His motivation (cynic that I am) was to sell more of his book(s). What is hysterical is that some people actually voted for him.
That's what happens with all those Republicant's that GOD told to run...
What's the $2 a gallon secret??????????????????????????????????????????
To the moon Alice!
How is this news? It was already over. It was ended for him. His prolonged denial of reality and late decision to acknowledge and accept it is simply typical GOP/Teatroll behavior.
One FREAK less. My goodness, where is it that the GOP looks for its candidates??? Palin, Bachman, the 999 guy, and now this old hipocrit. One doesn't know wether to laugh at them or to weep for our country. How low can the GOP get to have even considered these people? Pathetic.
So long moon base
I would have voted for him... Anyone has to be better than the 'America bashing and destruction' we have in the White House now. At least vote for an American. White, Black, whatever, I don't care just vote for someone with business sense and some pride in our country. A true leader is what we need, not a dishonest, slick speaker.
This means him and his wife have another week of being escorted around the country and taxpayers expense... selling her children book.
Nobody cares. Nobody ever did.
And "The Brain of Newt" woddels off to the dust bin of obscurity, never to be heard from again ... at least until his next marriage! ;-)~
YAY! It's long over-due.
"Romney will be ending his bid in November.. "
I tend to doubt that. There are a lot of states with GOP/Teatroll governors and legislatures and administrations where it should be fully expected taht there will be vote-count shenanigans followed by Mittens filing lawsuits. At the very least, the GOP/Teatrolls will use it as an excuse of "uncertainty" for refusing to do anything whatsoever in Congress during the lame duck.
Thank goodness. It's time. Now if Ron Paul would just fold his cards...
What a shock!!! Not that he ever had a chance anyway, he was just one of the many floated in the GOP's desperate, flailing search for Anyone But Romney.
Man, the GOP convention is going to be so sad. They all know they're going to lose and everyone's already positioning themselves for 2016 (evidenced by the fact that NObody wants to be the co-loser – um, VP – on Romney's ticket). But they have to pretend they have a shot anyway.
It baffles me that so many here still support Obama. This loser had hurt the image of our nation bowing to foreign leaders, spent way more money than we had on pet projects which further sank us in debt and lets his personal opinions cloud his judgement on matters of no relevance to the White House. I hope Obama loses in Nov!
You mean to tell me that this old ignorant foolish man was still running, what a crazy old detached man he is. One victory from religious nuts in South Carolina and he thought that he had a chance, what a joke.
He's been out of it for a long time. Need to get on with the business of fixing the values of this country. Obama and his progressive, government-first approach must be replaced. Obama has been wasting tax dollars on his campaign and golf outings for the past 2 years. He cares more about winning reelecton than leading the country.
