Boehner explains jabs at Obama as 'help'

Washington (CNN) – House Speaker John Boehner on Sunday described his amped-up rhetoric toward President Barack Obama in recent days as advice.

"The president is getting … some bad advice," Boehner said on CNN's "State of the Union." "Somebody needed to help him out, so I thought I would."

In the past week the top Republican accused Obama of losing courage and decreasing the standing of the presidency.

Boehner reiterated the opinions to CNN Chief Political Correspondent Candy Crowley on Sunday, saying Obama is "diminishing the presidency by picking fake fights, going after straw men every day."

The Ohio Republican said political gimmicks recently employed by the White House include support for the so-called Buffett Rule, a plan to apply a minimum tax rate of 30% on higher income earners; the president's rhetoric surrounding manipulation of the oil markets; and the debate over the extension of low student loan rates.

Looking to the 2012 election, he made the case for Mitt Romney, the presumptive Republican presidential nominee, by pointing to his success in business and pushed back against the suggestion that Romney's privilege would be an obstacle in the November election.

"The American people don't want to vote for a loser. They don't want to vote for someone that hasn't been successful," Boehner said. "I think Mitt Romney has an opportunity to show the American people that they too can succeed."

Boehner also indicated he is optimistic Republicans will hold onto the majority in the House.

He recently said Democrats have a "one in three chance" of regaining control of the lower chamber, after previously saying it was "nearly impossible."

But Boehner said nothing has changed.

"Listen, if the election were held today, I'm very optimistic that we will hold onto the majority," Boehner said. "But my job is to make sure that even under the worst-case scenario, we're able to hold onto our majority."

Boehner is the last person who should give the President advice, he can't do his own job. He has failed miserably and should be voted out when his term ends!

Boehner wanting to help Obama out at all, much less during an election year, is rubbish. Therefore, we know Boehner was lying about his intentions. At best he is disingenuous, at worst he is a liar.

    @ fekt

you had my interest UNTIL you made the ludicrious statement that "Romney was BORN rich and that's an accompishment" and then I figured it was satire. You said Obama NEVER accomplished anything and is a loser, Well at this point who is the POTUS and who is a wannabe? Romney has been running for POTUS for almost 10 years and never won, Barrack Obama, not born rich by the way, won on his first try. All this makes your post totally bogus just like Boehner. TOTAL FAIL!

    Did Boner cry?
What a loser, but a great leader for Republicans.

Oh yeah, Boner wants to "help" his hated sworn enemy. Boner and his congressional Republicans have the worst approval rates of anybody in Washington. If they're going to lie about everything (as they clearly are) they would at least try to make their lies sound a little more plausible. We aren't all as dumb as their Republican base.

You know, this notion that a President is more qualified because they may have been successful in business is such nonsense. FLASH! Governing this country is in NO WAY, SHAPE OR FORM, the same as running a business. Saying so is the big lie the GOP is trying to foist upon us yet again. Public and private are two very different things.

It was pretty clear that the TP would call the shots in this recent Congress. Boehner would look like he was working on a deal with the President and then he would walk out, return and then the same pattern would happen again. Wonder who was pulling Boehner's chains. It wasn't just Norquist but then maybe it was since they all signed a pledge to a lobbyist, of all people.

Boehner, you and your teapublicans in the house are responsible for the U.S. losing its AAA credit rating. If you and the tea people in the house had even compromised 1/2 the time the U.S. would be much better. The American people will not forget the house teapublicans saying "Let America default on its debts"

So successful that while Romney was Govenor of Mass., his job creation in four years left Mass. 47th in job creation in the United States. Kind of scary to think that he is the Republican nonminee! Even though the U.S. was losing over 800,000 jobs per month at the end of GW Bush's term, Obama and his administration have created over 250,000,000 jobs. Yes, still a long way to go, but while the UK, France and Spain, and Germany are heading into a backward spiral, the US is making progress. You don't fix the worst recession since 1929 in a few short years. It will simply take time regardless of who is in the White House. I think President Obama and company have brought the US back a long way since entering the Presidency. We are out of Afganistan, and Iraq, where we have been spending over 100 billion dollars a year. The auto industry has recovered, banks are recovering and everthing seems to be heading in the right direction. I hear that UK went the route the Republican front runner is wanting to use, and I understand that it has caused a double dip recession, the first since 1970.

LOL!! Go cry us a river BOehNER... lol!

They're only fake issues when they are hurting the GOP aren't they? There have been 200+ pieces of legislation passed by far-right wingers across the country since 2010 that detrimentally impact women's health and equality and even one that equated single motherhood to child abuse.

So BoehNER, this one is real... deal with the consequences.

Boehner has his "Ryan List" of tea party talking points that he has been sent to deliever.. We should actually feel sorry for his pathetic leadership, or lack there of. What women care about is their health care options, voter surpression, student loan interest rate, services for our children–are you starting to get it now?

The GOP has just started their losing fight. Catch Obama last night? Stellar performance.

Mr. Boehner is incapacitated by the influence of his tea partiers.

Somebody please helpppppppppppppppppppp Mr. Speaker before his devotees run down America.

Please vote them out so they could go back to get re-trained. Mr Speaker needs you more than ever.

Boehner has survived by crying crocodile tears and crying that the sky is falling down. I guess he fails to recognize that he has been in the 3rd most powerful man position, and he has done nothing to improve peoples lives, and has not purposed any thing to help the economy, but has fought every inititive to grow the economy. He has been at it for about a year and a half... the failures of congress are all his now.

It's like the democrats refuse to see the failures of the Obama administration. People wanted so badly to believe in something they still cling to it when it is so obvious Obama sold them out. The democrats went from wanting to end the wars to backing Obama's every move, even the illegal ones, in the wars. The money the Obama administration printed up for the bailouts has devalued our currency driving inflation. He wants to force health care on us and be in control of the decisions concerning our health. He signed the NDAA and now CISPA. He demands to be respected then disrespects the supreme court. He tells jokes now about the Secret Service prostitution scandal when he should be hanging his head in shame. The Democrats are naive if they think Obama has the support he had in 08 from his own party.

"diminishing the presidency by picking fake fights, going after straw men every day." Fake fights...really? Umm, let's see, wanting the top 1% to pay more taxes, calling out the women-hating repubs who want to take away women's health prevention resources, negating repubs budgets that slash every safety net for the poor and aged (which we will ALL need)....you mean those fights! Fight away, Obama!

We don't need Boehner to try and twist and distort what President Obama said. It was very clear and all very true. Boehner is the worst Speaker of the House in our lifetime, He has no control over the Republicans in the House, has no respect by them, cannot get them to do anything he asks, and has been nothing but a liar and an obstructionist.
Republicans are always going to criticize and lie and slander the President. They have been doing it non-stop since he was elected, so what else is new? Their ads are going to be the nastiest and the most dishonest we have ever seen in a campaign so be ready for a barrage of Republican lies in their TV ads. They are desperate with an embarrassment loser in Romney. You will hear nothing positive from them about what Romney can do because Romney has no clue what he would do and has not uttered a single detail of his solutions to our issues. He is an empty suit ready to do the bidding of the corporations and rich who pay him to say whatever they tell him.
Republicans are destroyers. Just look at the details of the Ryan budget which the Catholic Church has called "immoral" and "opposite of the teaching of Jesus" and how Ryan, who is Catholic. has "abandoned his faith and the church doctrine of charity and helping the poor with his budget".
Republicans are liars, evil, hate the People and serve the corrupt rich and corporate abusers who buy them. President Obama serves no lobby group and is totaly devoted to what is best for the American People – ALL of us. He is a real leader with a proven success record....and all the Republican lies cannot change that. Vote President Obama for a continued recovery of our nation and continued protection from the Republican forces out to destroy every program to help We the People.

He is the biggest two faced politician in Washington. Doesn't he know WE can see through his fakeness. As House Leader his job is pass good laws for our country. He refuses to do it. Congress now has the lowest approval rating in the history of our government. Last summer, he chickened out when the president offered major cuts to reduce the debts of the country–the catch was to bring in revenue from the 1%- the House Leader refused.. He blamed the president. We need to vote OUT this man.......he is NOT a leader. A real leader produces good laws......he doesnot scream. He doesn't place blame on others.
