Clinton, Obama headline Virginia fund-raiser

(CNN) - In an appearance Sunday alongside President Barack Obama at a fund-raiser for Obama's re-election effort, former President Bill Clinton took a shot at the president’s likely Republican presidential rival, Mitt Romney.

The president has “got an opponent who basically wants to do what they did before – on steroids,” Clinton said, according to pool reports. "Which will get you the same consequences you got before, on steroids."

The event took place in Virginia at the home of former Democratic National Committee Chairman Terry McAuliffe.

Chiming in, Obama said in terms of foreign policy he and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, “have spent the last three and a half years cleaning up after other folks' messes.”

The president also poked fun at Romney, mocking the former Massachusetts governor for referring to Russia as the country’s “number one geopolitical foe.”

“I didn’t know we were back in 1975,” Obama said.

More than 500 supporters were set to attend the reception with the two presidents, and 80 were scheduled to attend a dinner at the house. Tickets for the reception started at $1,000 a person and tickets for the dinner were $20,000 a person.

The event was the first of three joint fund-raisers that Obama and Clinton will headline together.

“You guys get two presidents for one, which is a pretty good deal,” Obama told the small Virginia crowd Sunday, while standing on a stage set up underneath a white tent.

Also in attendance were former Virginia governor and current Senate candidate Tim Kaine, as well as Rep. Jim Moran and state Sen. Barbara Favola.

Joking with the crowd, Obama talked about Air Force One as one of the perks of being president, saying Clinton misses the plane.

"I'll miss it, too," Obama added.

Drawing loud cheers, a woman in the audience quickly shouted, "But not yet!"

A spokeswoman for Romney's campaign reacted to the joint appearance but criticizing Obama's economic record, including the unemployment rate and current national debt.

"President Obama may be able to convince his friends to tout the slowest economic recovery since the Great Depression, but the American people deserve better," Andrea Saul said in an email.

"It was the policies of Ronald Regan together with the Fed and DEMS in Congress that started the great recovery that eventually brought down deficits and brought about huge increases in the economy and jobs."

I suggest you study your history a little better. Reagan's policies had next to nothing to do with the economic recovery, and in fact by the end of Reagan's administration both the deficits AND debt had exploded. The national debt TRIPLED under Reagan (200% increase). Paul Volcker, head of the Fed, saved the economy. By skyrocketing interest rates to their highest level ever, it caused a recession in Reagan's first 2 years, but it also got the biggest problem (runaway inflation) under control. Then, in '82 when the Fed cut interest rates by roughly 15% in a single swoop, it caused the biggest investment boom in American history. THAT'S what caused the economy to recover, not "trickle down economics".

The only people Billy Bob Clinton can endorse for something are Jennifer Flowers and Monica Lewinsky.
Clinton screwed them and Obama is screwing America.

Are we better off today than 3.5 years ago?
In January 20, 2009 when Obama was inaugurated.
1-One year recession with the risk of depression
2- The Real GDP was -6.3% in the 4Q2008
    3-700 000 jobs loss a month
4-Interest rate near 0% from the federal ( Federal reserve running almost out of options)
5- Deficit for the federal budget at $1.3T
6-Dow almost 45% value loss (6000 point today at 13000 point)
7-2 wars going on (Spending $13B to $15B a month and Thousands of life loss)
8-Losses of equities for more than $7T on homes (the real stimulus bubble in the last 10 years)
The president Reagan did a great work during the recession in the 80s but it was also, and many will say, helped by the fact that the interest rate was high at 19% . This was another tools again the recession. The action of the Federal Reserve by lowering the borrowing cost from 20% to around 6-9% was a great stimulator of the recovery. In addition, He inherited a small annual deficit of 2.7% of GDP and was able to afford to cut more taxes and to stimulate the economic. Obama administration did not have those tools and advantages.

obama's campain of blame it all on bush won't work this time around. He has wasted trillions and sold out this country, because deep down he hates everything this country stands for. He is just a slightly more politically correct al sharpton/jesse jackson.

"When Clinton forced banks to make loans to people who couldn't pay them back, he started all this."

It also didn't help that Mr. Bush added to Mr. Clinton's housing program by offering an even bigger slice of home ownership to those who couldn't afford to "pay them back" by including a no down payment mortgage clause. Not to mention allowing Wall Street to bundle said mortgages overseas to unsuspecting buyers.

Ron: 'It's known as the Horney and Hopey tour.'

President Clinton lied about a pecadillo. No one died. President Bush lied and hundreds of thousands of innocent civilians are dying in Iraq and Afghanistan. My friend's son died and his sister will never recover from her loss. Ever.

No one will recover from the loss of the 4000 American lives that have been lost. We'll be paying for these wars for the next 6 years. Bush ignored the warnings because he's a fool and the Towers came down. The Pentagon nearly came to destruction. 9/11 happened on HIS WATCH! It's his fault but no one said it. I'm saying it now. So will history.

two of the worst presidents in our history. If only they could have carter with them, they would have the 3 worst ever. Clinton destroyed our economy by demanding the banks make the high risk loans. Remember clinton saying home ownership was a right. Who cares if down the road it destroys the country. blame bush, blame bush will work with the un informed. Obama can't run away from solyndra, sun power ener1 solar trust, new black panther nasa for muslims etc.

Some people on here think Obama is the best thing since sliced bread. I would just like to know what has he done. Because I'm not seeing anything of consequence. Just remember the government is "for the people by the people". Blaming republican's is nice but it goes both ways, democrat's are no better. If the president would actually lead it would be impressive. He better keep that teleprompter clean so he can keep the useless word's flowing to the believer's.

Clinton is an X-factor the GOP can't cancel out.

People like him more than either candidate, and he's got Obama's back. Obama and Clinton have personality and salesmanship the GOP only dream about! Obama certainly doesn't need Clinton's help to beat Romney, but two Presidents are better than one......

    Beat that, Mitt!

Well, if Obama is blaming Bush its because he inherited all bush's mess while Bush is still in the forefront three plus years later, running off his mouth about how his tax breaks for millionaires and billionaires were passed to create jobs and improve the economy! That is, an economy that resulted in an economic crisis! And if Obama continues to blame Bush then its because Bush just endorsed Mitt Romney who has pledged to promote the very same failed and misguided Bush policies that led to our downfall at home and abroad! And by the way, if President Obama has spent trillions of dollars, then it was done so out of NECESSITY to stabilize our broken economy, prevent a catastrophic depression, put Americans back to work and make healthcare affordable for all Americans, subsequently reducing our national deficit by half a trillion dollars over a ten year period!

Clinton left the country with a huge surplus. Bush squandered the surplus like a child on a spending spree and nearly wrecked the economy. Obama has spent the past three years cleaning up the mess Bush left behind. It hasn't been easy.

"Who cares what Bill has to say. Maybe if he had kept his little bird in his pants he could had some type of respect... At least Romeny treats his wife like a 1st Lady. Go hide somewhere Bill with your low class behind doors life."
This says it all on how these partisan Repubs think. Ok, so you dissed President's Clinton's indiscretion but instead of praising President Obama and his love & respect for our First Lady, you go to Romney instead. I swear you people really have a true blind spot when it comes to this President.

Republicans under Bush made a mess of this country... both domestically and in foreign affairs. Obama and Secretary Clinton have restored our credibility around the world and brought it back to where it was under President Clinton.
Unfortunately for Obama, cleaning up the spending mess and disastrous debt problems created by Bush and Cheney is not as easy nor can it be done as fast.

Having President Clinton campaign with President Obama is a good idea because it reminds people that Democrats know what they are doing. Republicans do better than Dems in winning elections... but hands down, Dems know how to run government better than anyone including Mittens.

Clinton was at his best when he had a Republican House/Senate. No way he would have a surplus to his credit if during the whole of his tenure he had a Democratic House/Senate.

Clinton lowered the deficit and left a surplus. Over 24 million jobs created under Clinton. Bush wiped it all out by giving it to the rich in the form of tax breaks. Bush started 2 wars and put them on the National Credit Card and bailed on the check and left Obama to have to clean up his mess. Obama slowed the recession and even managed to turn the economy around while Republicans did everything they could in Congress to stop him. Through it all, Mitt Romney got even richer for it and like a fish you throw in the bottom of your boat, he flip flopped his way into running for President after sending thousands of jobs over seas. He has changed positions on every issue more times than I have changed underwear in my 64 years of life. Of course there is always the fact they claim they could have grown the economy faster than the last guy but we all know it takes time to screw things up and it take time to fix it up. If Republicans manage to scare people into electing Mitt "The Flip Flop" Romney in 2012 then you will deserve every bit of the pain you get.

Let me see if CNN will delete my previous comment once again! For those rightwing clowns who continue to say Obama is dividing the country, then just ask yourself which Party said from day one that they wanted the President and America to fail? And which base said openly and without restraint that a black man shouldn't be allowed to be President of the United States? And which base is driving around America with bumper stickers calling for the assassination of our President? And which base is using fear mongering and threatening to revolt and undermine our democracy if we the people exercise our God given right to re-elect President Obama? Which Party and base is really dividing America? And which base is doing all the derogatory and outrageous name calling and trying to return our country back to the Jim Crow era of the 1950's?

Ever notice how it is Republicans will at least sometimes work both side of the ailse and Democrats always only one side. Now we have Obama who doesn't care and "rulles" by Executive order. It's time to show the dictator in chief what freedom is all about and show him the Highway !

Blah blah the wheel's off your trailer - Well, if Obama is blaming Bush its because he inherited
Obama inherited exactly what he BEGGED to inherit when he asked for the job in 2008. To told the country he was the man to fix the problems. That has clearly proven to NOT be the case. And worse, he has proven he has no new ideas to fix the problems. The country can't afford 8 lost Obama years, even 4 years lost years is too much.
