Bachmann a Swiss citizen?
(CNN) - Proud American citizen Michele Bachmann now has another country to call home: Switzerland.
The Minnesota congresswoman and former GOP presidential candidate was granted dual citizenship with the European country, her spokeswoman confirmed Tuesday night.

"Congresswoman Bachmann's husband is of Swiss descent so she has been eligible for dual-citizenship since they got married in 1978," Becky Rogness said in a statement. "However, recently some of their children wanted to exercise their eligibility for dual-citizenship so they went through the process as a family."
While her husband has Swiss heritage, Bachmann wrote in her 2011 memoir that her ancestors hail from Norway (her great-great-great grandfather emigrated from the country). Her mother sang Norweigen folk songs to her as a child, she wrote, and she studied the language in college but "never had time really to gain proficiency."
Bachmann, who's running for a fourth term in the House, joins millions of Americans with dual citizenship.
According to the State Department, dual nationals "owe allegiance to both the United States and the foreign country" and "are required to obey the laws of both countries."
But could her new, by-marriage Swiss pride conflict with her own Norwegian roots?
Perhaps she'll stay neutral on that debate.

One of the 1%, obviously. I knew she couldn't relate with the average citizen.
People with dual citizenship should not be allowed to run for office. There allegiance has been compromised. How can they pledge allegiance to the United States of America where their allegiance is also to another country? What about conflict of interest situations involving the other country?
I am of Swiss descent- my mother came to this country as a post-war bride in 1948- and I speak for the entire Swiss nation when I say "Huh?"
i'm not sure if swiss people like should be proud now. the mostly weird ideologies of the tea party movement don't sewm to fit in the swiss view of the world.

I wonder if Swiss officials can refuse to divulge infomation of swiss bank accounts for swiss citizens? I doubt this dummy has 10 bucks at the local bank in the Walmart, but I'm wondering if Romney can "buy" some privacy by becoming a Swiss citizen?

Atleast now she will realise that after all Western Europe is not some communist place, as she paints all the time.
When you are sworn in as a new citizen of the United States you pledge to give up citizenship in any other country. If you don't, you dont become a U.S. Citizen.
I suggest we deport her. The country (the U.S., sorry Switzerland) would be much better off.
This person has been elected to serve in our government. She badly wants to be president, and is likely pushing hard for a VP spot. Ok, let's slap "We the People" in the face one more time and watch them take it without a word.
Come on Republicans, you should be outraged at this. Not only do I want to see her birth certificate, I want to see her release from the asylum, and ANY PROOF that there is something between this persons ears besides air.
I am totally embarrassed that she is even considered a part of the political discussion in this country. No wonder the world is laughing at us. Look at the people who they think (with good evidence) that we are listening to.

As a Democrat, and proud to be an American, I don't "owe allegiance" to any other country. This has to be the worst political move I've ever seen. If a well known Democrat was to do this, the right would be falling off their chairs shouting "TRAITOR." But all I hear is crickets.
I honestly can't believe we have a member of Congress who owes allegiance to another country. Again, if a Democrat did this, there would be immediate calls for impeachment. I say that Republicans should rally together and explore the impeachment of Bachmann. What an insult to America from one of our representatives.

"Recently Granted". So that means she had applied before seeking the Office Of The Presidency (it takes a good year or so for facilitated naturalisation while resident overseas) and that she never disclosed it while on the campaign. That is just plain wrong. If you want to be President, you should be a US Citizen only. However, the Constitution does allow a dual citizen to be President if they are a naturally born US citizen – something I disagree with. What I would like o know is what are her "close ties to Switzerland"? She has to have them in lieu of not actually living there for at least 5 years.
PLEASE just pack up and go. It would be a gift to America, a true teaching moment of addition by subtraction. Do it for the children!!
