(CNN) - Proud American citizen Michele Bachmann now has another country to call home: Switzerland.
The Minnesota congresswoman and former GOP presidential candidate was granted dual citizenship with the European country, her spokeswoman confirmed Tuesday night.

"Congresswoman Bachmann's husband is of Swiss descent so she has been eligible for dual-citizenship since they got married in 1978," Becky Rogness said in a statement. "However, recently some of their children wanted to exercise their eligibility for dual-citizenship so they went through the process as a family."
While her husband has Swiss heritage, Bachmann wrote in her 2011 memoir that her ancestors hail from Norway (her great-great-great grandfather emigrated from the country). Her mother sang Norweigen folk songs to her as a child, she wrote, and she studied the language in college but "never had time really to gain proficiency."
Bachmann, who's running for a fourth term in the House, joins millions of Americans with dual citizenship.
According to the State Department, dual nationals "owe allegiance to both the United States and the foreign country" and "are required to obey the laws of both countries."
But could her new, by-marriage Swiss pride conflict with her own Norwegian roots?
Perhaps she'll stay neutral on that debate.

Personally, I would have granted Michele Bachmann dual citizenship too, however, not in Switzerland, but rather, on Mars or Saturn (the further away the better...LOL).
I was always told that if a US citizen had to give up there citizenship if they wanted that of another country. What happened to that law?
Time for Michele to stay in Switzerland and safeguard Romney's account. By the way Michelle, we do not want to hear you again claiming "we want our country back" unless you mean Switzerland.
Does that make her a Socialist?
"Swiss Miss, instant cuckoo."

Bwahahahahahaha!!! Good one Donkey Party!!
Ahahahahahaha!!! Wasn't it Bachmann who said we should investigate Democratic Congressmen to determine how "American" they are? I'm sure her new dual citizenship will help her with all those Swiss bank accounts she uses to hold the money she steals as a Congresswoman.
Being a Swiss social democrat living in Switzerland I see no reason in being proud of this new fellow citizen. There is nothing in her political believes that she shares with the principles of our proud nation: personal freedom, solidarity, open mind, equal rights for all.
Oh please, Switzerland can have them!
Hopefully she moves there, which would be good for us, but a sad day for the Swiss.
I don't think she ever had time to become proficient in anything besides attention seeking.
She is preparing to flee from prosecution for the crime of being an insane republican.
Wow, if she was actively persuing that during her attempt to become the gop presidential candidate, she would have wasted a lot people's time and money.
I believe this will make her ineligible to run for President or Vice President now. Always look on the bright side!
I doubt that this is possible. You have to live in Switzerland to get the Swiss citizenship. And by the way: we don't want her, we already have enough weirdos of our own...
I believe they're very excepting of gays in Switzerland but less so of bible thumpers.
DMost Americans lack awareness of their own laws. US laws do not prohibit dual citizenship though it looks bad for a member of Congress to be a citizen of 2 countries let alone a Republican. Practicing Catholics coud be seen also as dual citizens since the Vatican is a country and the Pope is a head of state. In fact, the Republicans used that very issue against JFK. Bachman's move is perfectly legal although truth be told Switzerland is a socialist cou ntry and if Bachman was a Democrat the tea party hatemongering hypocrits would be working themselves in a frenzy right now.
Switzerland can keep Crazy Eyes.
Can we revoke her U.S. citizenship and make this a truly celebratory occasion?
Fine! Now go there and stay there you cheezy divisive bigoted woman!
If she is a member of the Intelligence commitee, I imagine that she has to have a TS security clearance. How can she keep that clearance if she has dual citizenship? That's one of the questions that is asked on the clearance request paperwork. I think the DIA would frown on something like this. Yank her clearance and give her a swiss passport.
Wow, all because she is married to him – wonder what the bible says about that one! Oh, I know, they will make something up and claim it is the truth that everyone should follow.
We should all be tolerant of those that love others, and things.
How dumb are the people in her district if they reelect her when she does this????
Just another country she can be considered "crazy" in.
Can you imagine what she and other Republicans would have said if Obama had accepted dual Kenyan citizenship?
Read the article, people who think this is impossible. Her husband has Swiss heritage, therefore him and his family are eligible for dual citizenship. Eligible. I'm sure there was more to the process. And yes, you can be an American and have dual citizenship with another country. But, that means you can never ever be President of the United States. Ever. So now we know Michelle Bachmann will not be in the running for VP, or will she pursue running again in the future. She can keep her Representative position in the house, though.
