(CNN) - North Carolina's newly approved constitutional amendment banning same-sex marriage has sparked an effort to convince the Democratic Party to move its upcoming national convention somewhere else.
An online petition launched after Tuesday's referendum on Amendment 1 calls on the party to abandon plans to hold its September 3-7 convention in Charlotte. The petition urges Democrats to host their gathering in "a state that upholds values of equality and liberty."

North Carolina, its a sad day for you. The South never learns. They claim to be Christian but bigotry and hate are alive and well.
MOVE THE CONVENTION OUT OF NORTH CAROLINA.
I'm all for this. They want to vote like animals, let them pay the price.
Agree. Why have the convention in STONE AGE NORTH CAROLINA?
Unfortunately, the logistics of moving the convention at this point would be insurmountable. Add to the fact that the convention location was decided well before Amendment 1 was even being considered. As a cradle Democrat, I would have been significantly happier had the convention not be held in one of the Republican Stranglehold states. This is the home state of Jesse Helms, after all. After he left the Democratic Party after the LBJ Civil Rights act of 1965, the rest of the state followed suit.
So my objection to North Carolina is not just due to Amendment 1, but also to their opposition to Labor Unions, their history of both overt and covert segregation, and the anti-intellectualism and fundamentalist evangelicalism that appears to embody many of the elements of that state,
I am all for gay marriage, but if the Democrats had to leave Charlotte or any other city because of what the teatards have done against civil and human rights in the last two years the convention would have to be held outside the US.
Be real people!
might as well ...obama just lost this state anyway...
A little late isn't it? Things like this don't get done over night. I wonder if there are some suggestions that these people are offering.
I agree it should be pulled from NC and I will donate to help pay for any penalties invoked by NC for the withdrawal.
Tell me where and when.
It should be move...why give business to a city r state that is 20 years behind.just like the state to the south of them.and i from that state it a sad day ...north Carolina catch up with the time it a new day thanks j
So now those whom you don't agree with will be punished!!! the hunter has become the hunted! then who is the bully now?
GOP to same-gender activists and Dems: Stay there and glue yourself to Charlotte.
Plan B if they will (according to Psychic Union) go to San Diego, Chicago or Des Monies.
Well that didn't take long. The left just loves to target people, cities, states, ANYTHING that doesn't agree with their far left insanity.
Nope, I think the Dems should stick with their plans and not let NC bully them. It will also be an opportunity to demonstrate in a very real way the big tent that the Democratic Party truly is.
No, just be certain that very little of the economic impact benefits the mouth breathing opposition supporters
Wish it was that easy to get the gays to move somewhere else. marriage is an agreement with God. God doesnt approve of the gay lifestyle. God destroyed the cities of sodom and gammorha for a reason. where do you think the word sodomy came from?
What do gay people not understand about marriage is a sacred agreement betweem man woman and God?
NC is totally uneducated, racial. Grow up, India, china are growing–U GROW TOO!!!
As a NC resident, I think keeping the convention in NC helps to shine a light on a host of right-wing issues that plague NC.
