Obama campaign attacks Rove's 'B.S.'

(CNN) – President Barack Obama's deputy campaign manager used a three-minute web video Thursday to take on the latest ad from the independent group Crossroads GPS, point by point.

"Karl Rove's group Crossroads is spending $25 million from secret donors to tear down the president in a new ad," Stephanie Cutter said to open the spot. "Time to tear this thing apart."

The web video is the official counter from the Obama re-election campaign to the Crossroads commercial that claims the president has broken promises surrounding homeowners facing foreclosures, taxes, health care coverage and cutting the deficit.

On Wednesday, the Rove-backed group said it would spend $8 million to run the ad in ten battleground states between now and the end of May and is expected to spend $25 million to air the spot over the next four weeks.

But Cutter pushed back on the ad's four claims, saying the president's policies have helped 6 million homeowners with their mortgages, led to a drop in middle class taxes, enabled individuals to keep their current health care coverage as part of the federal law and that Obama enacted $1 trillion in spending cuts to help reduce the deficit.

Short clips of Romney are interspersed throughout the video to prove the policies of the presumptive Republican presidential candidate would roll back Obama's progress. Cutter then asks supporters to "call out" Rove.

"So another special interest attack ad, another set of outright distortions and another time when I need to ask you to do what you do best: get the president's back," she said. "Karl Rove is relying on you to do nothing to call out his B.S., and I know you'll prove him wrong."

Crossroads GPS is the sister organization to American Crossroads, which first became active in the 2010 mid-term elections as an independent super PAC supporting GOP causes and candidates. Its founders included Karl Rove, former deputy chief of staff to President George W. Bush and former Republican National Committee chairmen Mike Duncan and Ed Gillespie.

A Wesleyan Media Project study released earlier this month, which used data from Kantar Media/Campaign Media Analysis Group, indicated that Crossroads GPS is the biggest spender on general election ads so far, dishing out $12.6 million to run nearly 17,000 spots in 47 television markets.

- CNN's Paul Steinhauser and Jessica Yellin contributed to this report.

My question is this. How does a guy that has never faced the voters, has been out of the limelight for years, maintain his position as the most powerful man in the Republican Party?

So much money spent to defame, defraud, distract, deride and derail in US politics. It started with Bush Sr. and has gotten progressively worse. We are now a direct reflection of this sick and disgusting political process!

Karl Rove's political strategy that began when he helped George W Bush run for governor of Texas, is to keep repeating things that are not true, and eventually people will believe it.

Karl Rove sits in the middle of a long line of BS slingers in American history. There are very few citizens that choose to do what he does. Most have at least a modicum of decency and civility. He has neither.

Karl Rove is Lee Atwater all over again, for those of you who remember him. On his deathbed he apologized for how ruthless he went after Democratic opponents. All these years later, nothing was learned, except the public has not only allowed it to get worse, but have now joined in and championed the cause.

This is great, but she's right. The Republican lie machine is counting on Democratic apathy in this voting cycle.

I think at every turn Karl Rove's name should be mentioned. His underhanded and deceitful tactics are well known and just hearing his name attached to anything tells people that whatever it is, it's probably at best a distortion or more likely, an outright lie.

    Here come the lies.

Republican economic policy between 2001 and 2009 created the worst financial meltdown since 1929. Republican foreign policy between 2001 and 2009 bungled two wars run "off the books". Under Republican leadership, thousands of Americans died, millions of American lost their jobs, and trillions of dollars were added to our national deficit. Obama stopped the meltdown from becoming a depression, reversed the skyrocketing job losses, safely withdrew our troops from Iraq, and crippled Al Qaeda with surgical strikes by drones and special ops.

All the Republicans can do is lie and smear. Here they come.

Wow its amazing how things always seem to balance out. This strategy of perverting politics with money for ads (no thanks to the clowns in the supreme court) is being counteracted by social media. Without facebook, twitter, youtube etc, it would have been so much harder to disprove the the BS!!! So YAY to social media for not only championing democracy but also for saving it in places like the US!!!!!!

That jokester hitler also invoked that if you tell a lie enough times people will start believing all the BS.
The flip, flopper was governor for a bilip. He has not held any official office that we know of and as part of bain made sure Amsricans lost their jobs.
How can that clown rove think tha this is going to work against the President? While our President was giving orders (against pretty much everyone around him) for the Seals to kill bin laden the sociorobully was looking at architectural plans for his new La Jolla mansion and car elevators!!

This is the prototypical GOP approach,.. if you do not agree with me, I get to insult you. The comment is insulting to your readers and shows how little the "GOP" mind has to offer.

  21. The REAL Truth...

@Russ in Md – That's pinning the tail right where is belongs and I would go as far to say that the Dems are the biggest instigators of this rhetoric.
And this is where the partisanship starts, because BOTH sides view themselves as correct. It's how wars are started. The sad FACT is that despite the claimed intelligence of the American Voter, as a collective we are DUMBER THAN MUD! We choose our candidate based of what is fed to us, based on our viewpoint. We don't check FACT, nor search for and refute the LACK OF TRUTH in candidate advertising. If a company released ads like political groups do... they'd all be in JAIL by now.. false advertsing, etc.

I am in the middle class – family of 4, own a home, dual income, making $120- 150,000 – and my taxes went down from Bush to Obama. Not by a lot, but then I am not expecting more services if I pay less for them.
It amazes me that Rove can get up and claim that Obama did not keep promises.
He should add that any promises Obama did not keep were ones that Rove and republicans fought to be sure never happened: "... folks, blame president Obama because he has not helped you more. And praise us because we did everything we could to stop him from helping you..."
