(CNN) - The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People on Saturday announced its backing of same-sex marriage, more than a week after President Barack Obama also expressed support for the issue.
"The mission of the NAACP has always been to ensure political, social and economic equality of all people," Roslyn M. Brock, chairman of the NAACP's board of directors, said in a statement.

She added: "We have and will oppose efforts to codify discrimination into law."
Following Obama's announcement last week, speculation swirled over whether his decision would spark political backlash among some in the black evangelical community, which has traditionally been against same-sex marriage.
Meanwhile, some prominent African-American religious leaders, including the Rev. Jesse Jackson and the Rev. Joseph Lowery, praised Obama's support for same-sex marriage last week.
The NAACP in the recent past has stood in favor of gay rights issues, notably opposing Proposition 8 in California, the Defense of Marriage Act, and North Carolina's constitutional amendment that bans marriage and domestic partnerships for same-sex couples.
"Civil marriage is a civil right and a matter of civil law. The NAACP's support for marriage equality is deeply rooted in the Fourteenth Amendment of the United States Constitution and equal protection of all people," said the group's president, Benjamin Todd Jealous.

Kudos to the NAACP for this position. Don't forget that there are gay blacks just as much as in any other race, so it's not outside of their pervue to advance the rights of gays Americans, some of whom are black.
The NAACP will support any cause that brings in a few bucks. The organization is no longer capable of fulfilling its stated mission and instead looks for money making opportunities. It is a guarantee that money has exchanged hands with the LGBT organizations.
What the NAACP needs to know is it doesn't matter whether they support this issues or not, Obama has lost many votes as a result of his declaration. The NAACP will lose support also.
It's nice to see NAACP officially controls the media. Between this 'civil right' thing and the Zimmerman/Trayvon case, the media looks kinda ridiculous sometimes.
While I personally applaud the President I think he has yet again thrown many black conservatives under the bus. Obama knows full well that they have no choice but to vote for him, they are in the bag. It's tough situation to put the NAACP in.
Google search "Desmond Hatchett".
Well, OF COURSE they back it now...'Nuff said.
Pathetic political move to support a racist President from one of the most racist organization in the US...

R@cisms at its best!
The NAACP has now lost totally credibility and the Black Clergy have turned their face against GOD.
The NAACP is outdated and needs to shut their political pie-hole.... they have to mouth away about something to stay in the news. What are they going to broaden their spectrum of advancing next?
There's a shocker. The NAACP would back Obama if he said the moon was made of green cheese. Obama is their Santa Clause.
Everyone should have equal rights. Period.
I applaud the NAACP.
As many times as I disagree with a lot of the NAACP's policies (they tend to throw things out of proportion) I have to agree with this one.
Yes. Good move, all around.
Falling right into line.
Does this really surprise anyone? The NAACP is an organization that has proven time after time they have no shame.
Many thanks to the NAACP for continuing to fight bigotry and discrimination. You are clearly on the right side of history.
Once again, the NAACP comes out on the right side of history. God bless the NAACP!
Good for the NAACP!
It's been interesting to watch the "Christian" leaders of the African American community who have openly opposed gay marriage for decades suddenly have an epiphany that contradicts everything they've ever preached in church every Sunday.
This is truly a watershed not only for political pandering by Obama to the LGBT community and the NAACP to Obama, but more so, it's about all the many people who have sold their souls for Obama who will go to church Sunday morning somehow justifying their new beliefs.
So now the NAACP is not only a racist organization, but one with deviant beliefs. Sickening. No wonder the black community is the way that it is. Typical Democrats. NOBAMA 2012.
This group of race-centered people is selling it's soul simply to make a mixed race person look better in hopes of winning another term as president. Payoffs could be big.
Monkey see monkey do
