BLITZER’S BLOG: Pressure mounting on Obama to free Pollard

(CNN) – The pressure is mounting on President Barack Obama to free Jonathan Jay Pollard, the American convicted of spying for Israel.

Israeli President Shimon Peres says he will ask Obama to give clemency to the former U.S. naval intelligence analyst who pleaded guilty to providing Israel with classified documents in 1987.

two words.....NO WAY. This guy is a traitor to his country and deserves what he got. AIPAC(?), Peres, Bibi or whomever can lobby all they want. He sold us out. Anyone that does this (with an ally or not) is a criminal

US Naval intelligence analyst who spied for Israel? I would say that his compromising our nation's security should warrant a Life Without Parole instead of a simple Life Sentence.

No, the pressure is NOT mounting. The Israelis ask for his release every other day. This is not new. There is no reason to report on it as being "news". Every president since the day he was caught has been asked by every official Israel can throw at them. The only "pressure" being exerted is by this blog trying to create the impression that there IS pressure – perception is reality in politics.

There is no reason to let this guy off easy. There is no backstory that makes what he did "understandable". He wasn't forced. He wasn't righting a wrong. He just spied for Israel. Of course THEY think he should be released – he's a hero to them because he's THEIR SPY. But that is what he is, a spy. He betrayed the US. Unfortunately, some people, for reasons of their own, appear to think spying for Israel "isn't so bad." IT IS! IT'S TREASON! He should rot in jail just like anyone who betrayed his country for the USSR, China, Iran, or whereever.

Don't let anyone pressure you President Obama. This man is a traitor, he deserves to rot in prison. He ought to be thanking whatever god he prays to that he wasn't executed. All traitors should be in prison, including Shrub2, Cheney and Rummy.

    OBAMA 2012!

Being Jewish, I hope Israel exists forever. That said, a traitor is a traitor even if he gives classified info to an ally. I'm sorry but he should spend the rest of his life in jail. Semper Fi

It is sad to see all these above comments. This man spied for a "friendly" country and DID NOT as Joe from CT explained "compromise the national security" of the United States. He gave information on an Iraqi nuclear facility to Israel–a country that would never harm the United States. In fact, if Israel never bombed the Iraqi Nuclear reactors in 1981, who knows what Sadaam could have done to our US Troops in Iraq. I agree, Pollard was a spy-but he has expressed regret and has served his time. The guy is not a danger to the United States and has expressed remorse. He is dying and Obama should grant clemency immedietly.

Pressure is not mounting. Only the rhetoric is mounting for some reason. What's the point in having severe punishments for severe crimes if you commute the sentence? Those two Congressman are just trying to satisfy their campaign donors.

CORRECT. A Republican wouldn't even bother with a trial and sentencing. They would just lock them up, throw away the key, and name the place Guantanamo.
