Miriam Adelson gets a refund

Washington (CNN) - It is not your typical refund.

Miriam Adelson, the wife of Nevada casino mogul and major GOP donor Sheldon Adelson, got a $5 million refund for one of her contributions to Winning Our Future, the super PAC that almost single-handedly kept Newt Gingrich's campaign alive by running millions of dollars in ads on his behalf.

Sheldon and Miriam Adelson donated a combined $20 million to the super PAC.

A day after Newt Gingrich suspended his campaign on May 1, Winning Our Future sent the $5 million refund to Mrs. Adelson.

That news was contained in the group's May disclosure report to the Federal Election Commission, which was filed Wednesday.

Once it was clear Gingrich was not going to win the nomination, the leaders of Winning Our Future met to decide what to do with its remaining money. They decided "the only right thing to do was to give the money back,” its senior adviser Rick Tyler told CNN.

Mrs. Adelson contributed a total of $12.5 million to the group, while her husband gave $7.5 million. Miriam Adelson’s last contribution to Winning Our Future was on March 21.

Sheldon Adelson is one of the wealthiest men in America. His fortune is estimated by Forbes Magazine at just under $25 billion.

Miriam Adelson is accomplished in her own right: She is an active Republican donor, a medical doctor, a fierce defender of her native Israel and involved along with her husband in a variety of business and philanthropic causes

Both Adelsons gave their first donations to the super PAC backing Mitt Romney, Restore Our Future, earlier this month when they contributed a total of $10 million, according to two sources with knowledge of the contribution.

Meanwhile the refund mostly depleted Winning Our Future of its cash. The group’s FEC report indicated the organization has $512,417 cash on hand as of the end of May. In total the super PAC raised $22,496,949 (89% of which came from the Adelsons). The group spent $21,832,864.

A representative of the Adelsons had no comment on the refund.

Romney's Restore Our Future....Who is he talking about? The policies he is touting are the very same as GWBush. That's when "our" future as the middle class went in the toilet. I think the "Our" are those corporate people's futures.

Thanks to the right wing activist supreme court lackie/judges that conjured up the "Citizens United" ruling these are the kind of people that can and will help decide for the rest of us who will be the leader of the free world next November.

I don't get it, what's wrong with getting your money back because it wasn't used by the campaign? When I read the headline I thought it was a tax refund. Was this an attempt to get people angry at Republicans because if so than we're going to have to also get mad a the very rich, wealthy Democrats. Seriously, to poison people to help Obama win because Obama's job performance is not good is pretty sad.

It must be weird to be so rich that you can be a puppet master!!!
    Dance Mitt, dance!!

Hope the Supreme Court realizes what it's done and takes steps to correct it. And so it continues, the chasm between rich and poor grows wider . . .

What self-respecting, sane, decent, intelligent Jewish person gives money to the right wing? There aren't enough Yiddish words beginning with "schl" to describe this horrible man.

I hope that she does some good with the money. To me that, that would be giving it to a food pantry or job training center. That is the thing to do with that money.

"a fierce defender of her native Israel" means basically she will spill US blood and treasure to protect her homeland. People like Miriam are despcable – I have more respect for illegals who want to give their lives to America than this malcontent.

Cut them off at the source. Do not patronize the Venetian or the Palazzo casinos in Las Vegas. Don't waste your money getting fleeced at his casinos. You're a rube if you do. He does not care about average middle class Americans and his primary loyalty is to another country. He only supports the candidates that will wage war on his behalf.

That is just wrong.. they give millions and millions away to republican advertising... I'd like to know how many of their staff at the casinos make just over minimum wage?

Funny how "republican donor" was listed first ahead of "medical doctor" in the CNN list of accomplishments. i guess she nust have spent her 12 years in med school aspiring to be a republican donor. And the Lefty Loon Haters will still defend CNN as not being biased. LMFAO!

This is sick.....with the debt and the people of this country in such need, children going to bed at night starving in this Great and Powerfuf Country and these billionaires and millionaires are giving away millions of dollars to buy the election. If they are such good loving Americans and want to get America out of debt think how much all the money raised and given to these campaigns both republican and democrats could have contributed this money to the debt or organizations that could really make a difference for the poor or people suffering.....the Supreme Count should be ashamed of themselves for allowing these kind of donations to the SuperPacs........just goes to show you the rich and powerful are the ones running this country......does our votes really count.....kiss the middle class good bye.
