Congress faces Saturday deadline on highway bill

Washington (CNN) - Congressional negotiators facing a June 30 deadline before federal money runs out for highway construction projects across the country have the choice of punting a 10th consecutive time with a short-term extension or compromising on a multi-year bill.

Party leaders insist that letting the surface transportation funding bill expire is not an option, and President Barack Obama has called repeatedly for passing the measure to ensure continued funding for the hard-hit construction industry amid sluggish economic recovery.

What reason can Republicans make up to not repair our crumbling highway system originally put into place by Republican President Eisenhower? There are critical infrastucture needs that must be met – either now or when the bridges fall into the river with people on them or school roofs collapse while our children our in them or train tracks that can no longer carry the supplies, food, and products across the nation. It's time for Republicans to act like responsible adults, actual servants of the People from the oath they took, and learn what leadership means. Republicans are hell bent on making sure no jobs are created – not one vote for the Jobs Act and 0 jobs bills introduced by them in 3 years.

This is whats been going on for 3 1/2 long years.I'm so sick of the Republicans and their agenda to STOP anything & everything from passing so they can get the President out of the W/H.Not to mention the blaten Lies that have been flying around this country.I've watched this daily because i'm retired and have the time to do so.I have never in my life see a President of The United States treated so badly and demonized in every way hunamly possible. And I'm an Independent and have issues on both sides of the spectrum. But the display of evilness is unexceptable and inexcuseable at all levels. We would NOT be in this situation if it were not for the obstruction of the GOP, the T-Party,and That Grover Norquest. When election time comes I really hope the people of this country vote for the Presidents re-election and vote out all the people who are responsible for continually makeing people suffer anymore. This is discusting and it needs to STOP and President Obama deserves to be re-elected and finish cleaning up the mess and finish his work protecting us from ever haveing to go thru this ever again. He is a Great President.I admire his determanation and strong will he has shown during these tough years trying to make everyone safe and stableizing the country from a Deep Depression. He has my vote for sure.

  5. Former Republican, now an Independent

This is clearly another republican election year manipulative tactic, just like gas prices. We just travelled through 3 election year "battleground" states and 2 states guaranteed to go red and found gas prices .89 cents per gallon higher in the battleground states. That is pure manipulation by the oil companies and the republican party to try to get candidates elected that are in their pocket.

Problem with our highways contractors they are using substandard materials, and gouging inflating the price everything that they do, and something that should take four months to do, it takes half a year or longer soaking it for all it's worth.

And the reason why they use substandard material it is called job security, if they use high quality material that lasts too long.

And our government just turned a blind eye and let them do it WHY.

And it's the same way with our bridges, if they repair it to good there is no job security, when they finished the job in a year or two it's time for them to start all over again, and then they start gouging soaking it for all it's worth again.

Wake up America and then wake up Congress.

All of the Stimulus money given to Govenors from the taxpayers needs to be returned if they have not yet used them on JOBS!!
There should be a public listing of where those funds went and WHAT they were used for. MEDIA DO YOUR JOB!!

Let Congress travels on the bad high/low way, from/to the WH, to give them a touch feeling. Then, they will come-up with immediate and triple fold funds.

    Seeing is believing.

Get it done and stop dragging your feet. Enough is enough. We should expect our politicians to work for us and to find a way to work together to get funding bills through. Maybe we need to do a little picketing of Congress and to push them to do the job they were sent to Washington to do..

It would be nice to see the GOP stopped being controlled by the teapublicans and be pro-infrastucture because we need it. The better roads, rails and communications we have, the better we can compete against the rest of the world.

WHY not put out the ROAD WORKS to BID from NON-UNION workers – MAYBE we could get WORK, instead of loads of Cones and Signs and little WORK – – I am SICK of seeing roads coned-off with only a lone worker and maybe 5 or so "supervisors" – – let's get SHOVEL READY NOW

Hey, construction workers don't need to feed their famillies and Americans don't need safe roads and bridges to drive on. Isn't that what we as a country voted for when we swept the Tea Party into office? Dirt roads instead of highways, thats the Tea party future for our infastructure. Cross bridges at your own risk. Thats republican individual responsibility. And to think, all of this and it helps stifle the recovery and makes the President look bad. Sabotage the train and then get paid to fix it, thats the Republican plan. it worked in 2010, lets see how it goes in 2012.

Do they really think they can afford to do this short term punt or completely shut down during an election year? Of course they wouldn't think that far ahead. They can't ever think as far as next week.

  17. Obama 2012 - BEND Forward America, take another 4 long years of OBAMA FAILURE

Sure... put another trillion on the China charge card for our grandkids to pay back. It's all Obama and the Democrats know how to do. Nothing but temporary make work jobs that will disappear when government money disappears while ignoring private sector jobs. Obama is a joke and he's out of dumb tricks.
