Bloomberg roasts his own hot dog speech

(CNN) - New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg had one question for his staff while reading a speech Tuesday ahead of the Nathan's Famous Hot Dog Eating Contest.

"Who wrote this sh**?" the third-term mayor asked, sparking a wave of laughs in the Coney Island crowd.

His candid query came after Bloomberg began reading his remarks and realized the speech was chock-full of hot dog puns.

"Let me be completely 'frank.' This is one of my favorite traditions," the barely-amused mayor said. "I 'relish' it so much."

Continuing, Bloomberg took a slight pause at each pun to emphasize the respective phrase, somewhat mockingly each time.

He referred to the "dogged" contestants and said only one will be pronounced "wiener."

Following a string of more frankfurter related quips–including a line about the contest being a "dog fight"–Bloomberg went off-script, saying: "Think of how many we got into one sentence. That was really impressive."

The mayor then asked his rather, frank, question.

I'm a democrat but still think Mayor Bloomberg makes all of us here in NYC proud. NYC, the #1 place on the planet-just ask any tourist about that.

I'm surprised "Mayor Nanny" hasn't gone after hot dogs and made anything bigger than 6 inches illegal in NYC.

It shows that the Mayor actually has a sense of humor, although if he is the one who is pushing to limit the size ob big gulps, he has a mental problem. I really believe that New York probably has a few more problems to see to rather than a big gulp drink. Maybe he should outlaw hotdogs, does he really know what those things are made of? YUK.

That's an example of "how to turn a really bad speech into a memorable moment", and he did it with 4 words. Nice save, Mayor.

Tell me that the proceeds from this event are going to fight hunger around the world. Hard to imagine with hundreds of millions starving and malnourished around the world that we have a contest to see how fast people can eat.

we need MORE Republicans like the mayor. In fact if he were to run in 2016 I would have to REALLY give him a strong look.

more in the GOP could take personality lessons from Bloomberg...if he were to make a run at it in 2016 he just might get my vote. Not against voting for a Republican with sense. it's just been lately there have been very few that have any.

Honesty in politics? That's right, the Republicans really need a guy like this instead of the philandering panda they have...There's still time, you know. But August is right around the corner. Better get organised.
