(CNN) – As political chatter over Mitt Romney's choice for running mate gets louder, the presumptive GOP nominee's wife offered a new glimpse into the highly secretive process: the campaign, she said, is looking at women.
"We've been looking at that," Ann Romney said when asked in a CBS interview whether her husband should select a woman to join him on the GOP ticket. "I'd love that option as well. So, you know, there's a lot of people that Mitt is considering right now.
Ann Romney's comments, which aired Thursday, came during a July 4th interview taped in Wolfeboro, New Hampshire. The Romneys, alongside New Hampshire Sen. Kelly Ayotte, marched in the town's parade.

Ayotte, the Granite State's junior senator, is one of several of female politicians that could be on Romney's vice presidential list. New Mexico Gov. Susana Martinez, South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley, Oklahoma Gov. Mary Fallin, and former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice have all been mentioned in the media as potential running mates for Romney.
Minnesota Rep. Michele Bachmann, who has not been frequently discussed as a potential contender, left it up to the presumptive GOP nominee and his team to make a comment when asked about the process in an interview on CNN Monday.
"Well, that's something for the campaign to answer on," she said on "Piers Morgan Tonight." "That's not for me to make that decision, and that announcement."
Ann Romney said in the interview Wednesday she had a few names on the top of her list of potential running mates.
"I like to think that I have a few that I really like a lot," she said.
Speaking about Democrats aiming to re-elect President Barack Obama, Ann Romney lamented what she saw as a brutal tactic to take her husband down.
"I think early on we heard what their strategy was. It was kill Romney," Romney said.
The candidate's wife continued: "And I feel like that's not really a very good campaign policy. I feel like Mitt's got the answers to turn this country around. He's the one that's gotta bring back hope for this country, which is what they ran on last time."
Oh this is great – the only Republican women available are worse than idiot Sarah Palin. Romney can't/won't choose a man because all available would be better choices for President than him. Republicans have no respect for women so they think they can find a stupid one they can manipulate. Romney and his VP candidates – the next set of Republican dumb and dumber or extreme or extremer Either way Romney can't win. No one, including Romney still knows what he stands for. Just admit it Republicans. You have no viable candidates. Donate your campaign cash to the debt you ran up or to pay back taxpayers for your Wall St bailout.
OMG that would be great...let's seal the deal now...let Bachmann run, what a used up hack she is...or maybe that sot from Arizona Jan Brewer. She would not be available if you have to drag her sundrenched face and voice off the desert...and I am sure BIC, Bimbo In Charge Palin would jump at it...maybe she will finally be able to locate Russia!!
Condi Rice is the clear winner on the list. She has foreign policy experience. Gives some continuity with the Bush presidency. She's a woman and a minority. She's accomplished and very smart. I imagine the job is hers if she wants it.
I wish Ann Romney wouldn't use such inflammatory language. Nobody wants to "kill" Mitt Romney. We can disagree about who we think should be the next President of the United States without resorting to such language.
Interseting comment from Ann Romeny re "kill Romney." What exactly did Mitt do to his opponents in the primaries? He did not win on ideas but with negative campaining. In the end Mitt has no ideas just the mantra "kill Obama." So no matter who he picks he will lose.
And we know how well that worked out for McCain! Pick the best you can get, don't worry about the gender, or race, etc. This is coming from a Democrat...who will vote Democrat, but I had to throw my 2 cents in.
Anne needs to pull a Cheney.
After all, it's her turn.
I wonder if the female VP candidate will get a $150,000 wardrobe like Palin. That alone would make it attactive to woman candidates. The question is will they have to hire a tutor like they did for Palin to inform them on current events.
Won't help Mitt and poor Ann, if you can't take the heat, get out of the kitchen! Your husband and you think that you deserve to be leader of the free world because you are wealthy- no, he and you have no qualifications except for destroying others to get your own. Greed and lack of empathy for others will not get you anywhere,. no matter what poor woman you can coerce into running with you. You are a loser. You offshore jobs and your own money so as not to pay taxes in America. You can't even take care of a dog correctly.
After George Bush, I didn't think the Republicans had a chance in the last election until the Deocrats picked a Black man as their candidate and then I thought the Republicans had it locked until McCain chose a woman as a running mate and I knew they had blown it. With Obama's poor record of getting things done, I can see the republicans have a real shot at regaining the presidency, though I hope not, unless they screw it up again by arbitrarily picking a woman as a running mate. This is not an indictment on the ability of blacks or women to adequately run the country, I just think there are too many people in the U.S. that will not support a party that has a woman or a black candidate running for them.
Ann Romney is over-the-top delusional if she thinks the Obama campaign are using brutal tactics trying to bring down her husband! The fraud, deceit, and outright lies that the republicans have used in this election are unprecedented! She needs to get a grip on reality.
You lose, Ann- just because you are wealthy does not mean you deserve to be leader of the free world. Mitt is not even a patriot – he keeps your money offshore just like he offshores American jobs to enhance your own wealth. Why, you two can't even take care of a dog correctly. Mitt Romney doesn't even live up to his Mormon promises which say that he will tell the truth and always do the best thing , the right thing and I don't mean right-wing.
Obama in a landslide!
If the name sarah Palin comes up i say we all say screw this and leave the country
What a bunch of bull. It's all show and pandering. There is no way he will pick anything but a lily white right wing MALE ideologue who is more boring than he is.
Will she have to be able to ride a jet ski?
The cowardly Mitt sends his wife out to float this red herring to distract from the GOP's anti-woman agenda. Trust me, there will not be a woman picked for the No. 2 spot, much as I'd love to see Sarah rise from the dead, or her evil twin Michele, to completely sink the campaign.
He'll or is it Heil will select Hillary, just to screw with Obama
@Investment Advisor
No one is suggesting that those female politicians are on anyone's short list for VP, nor ever have been, nor ever will be. Their names were not bounced around in 2008, not in 2012, and perhaps not in 2016. Do I have to point out that it is conservative political gurus, professional and amatuer alike, that are bringing up those conservative women as potential running mates?
Ann Romney needs to tone down her rhetoric. Metaphors invoking ‘Killing’ are strictly a Republican tactic.
It is just another gimmick he will never pick a women this is just to show the appearance of it not actually will be done
Apparently Romney is under the impression the second time is the charm.
I would go with Sarah Palin. Sarah has campaign experience and knows which interviews to turn down.
He needs to go talk to McCain, it worked for him. This should be an insult to women everywhere. He is not picking a good VP based on qualities needed but by gender. Hey pick one that is mixed hispanic, black, jewish-christian, who started poor but is now rich, and is a good-looking woman. Election winner! That is the only thing that is important right?
Sorry fletc3her, Condi Rice would make a great Presidential Candidate, but she would never sit in the back of the Romney bus.
Why do you need a Woman for VP when you have Ann who goes around and asks women what they need. It is not Mitt the Myth talking to them, it is the wife.
I hope he picks Hillary!
