(CNN) - Mitt Romney senior adviser Ed Gillespie said Sunday on CNN’s "State of the Union" the GOP candidate “retroactively” retired from Bain Capital after the 2002 Salt Lake City Olympics began.
"You know, there may have been thought at the time that he could be part time," Gillespie told CNN Chief Political Correspondent Candy Crowley. "It was not part time. The Olympics was in a shambles. There was corruption. There was - the International Olympic Committee was going to pull the Olympics from the United States of America which would have been a huge embarrassment. Because of Mitt Romney's leadership skills he was called on to do it."
Gillespie continued, "He took a leave of absence and, in fact, Candy, he ended up not going back at all and retired retroactively to February of 1999 as a result."

Romney's wife, Ann, in a November 2000 interview with the Boston Globe, said that Romney had been forced to lessen, but not end entirely, his involvement with Bain Capital due to his work with the 2002 Winter Olympics.
What? The Utah Olympics lost a ton of money.
I'm a bit confused. From this interview I'm to understand that the Olympics were almost pulled under the Bush administration because there was a lot of corruption but candidate Romney flew in to save them. Sounds like it was lacking oversight, like everything under Bush. Then Romney "retroactively retired" from Bain to avoid criticism in the current election campaign. It seems like there's a whole lot of magic going on here.
And here come another one . . . Next! Here's an easy out for you Romney, just show us your papers dating all the way back to that day in question. The next than on the list is did you really save the olympics or did big government front you the money? And after that, why did you, while governor of Mass. allow your staff to purchase and destroy all the state own hard drives? There's more to come but chew on these for a while.
Romney was with Bain until 2002- it's now official. His spokesman said it. you can't say "I retroactively retired".
Romney man is a liar. This nonsense needs to be addressed now. His tax returns for 1999-2002 MUST go public!
So is he retroactively lying to us now, or retroactively falsifying SEC filings? Which is it?
Why is Ed Gillespie speaking for Romney. The press reported that the Olympic committee was having great diffculty and that the games were in jeopardy. No one denies that nor the fact that Mr. Romney did a good job. However, that does not tell the story of his activities at Bain. Retroactive does not cut it.
Very fitting since I plan to vote for Mr. Romney in 2016. Retroactively.
Retroactively retired? WAIT ..... WHAT?!?! Shaking my head....
He won't release his tax returns because they will prove that he was still at Bain Capital, earning a huge salary, even after he said he had left from there. Does anyone in their right mind think that Romney understands how the average American lives? We don't have several mansions! We don't go out on speed boats! We don't have elevators for our cars!
I'd love it if I could just not pay the taxes I owe. And then when (or if) I ever got caught, I could "retroactively" agree to pay what I owe. #Sarcasm
