Sununu: 'I'm apologizing for using those words'

(CNN) – Mitt Romney's national campaign co-chair John Sununu apologized Tuesday afternoon for questioning President Barack Obama patriotism earlier in the day.

Appearing on CNN's "The Situation Room with Wolf Blitzer," Sununu said he regrets using those words.

"I'm apologizing for using those words," said Sununu. "I did say those words that were there and, frankly, I made a mistake."

Sununu harshly criticized Obama's leadership in a conference call with reporters and saying he wished "this president would learn how to be an American."

The conference call came on the heals of the Obama campaign's continued attacks on presumptive GOP nominee Mitt Romney's business record and reluctance to release more tax returns.

Too late fatman, they are already being used in a campaign ad against Romney. Thanks, John!

In other words, Sununu realized that he had stepped in some hot dog poo with those words, now he wants to apologize. If you did not mean them, you should not have said them in the first place. As a politician who has been around for a while–obviously too long, he should know better. People who are campaigning, whether for themselves or others, really need to pay attention to what they are saying. This whole un-American thing that the Republicans seems to be on really reflects poorly on them and should be a big turn-off to any self-respecting person who knows that this type of behavior is wrong.

kudos for apologizing, Gov Sununu. It'd be nice if 1) we cold elevate the discourse a bit in this country and 2) if I wasn't so cynical that I believed you meant to imply our president wasn't American and then apologize once the was damage done.

Typical republican. Spew hateful comments and then retract them. And the neocons say the liberals are the ones spreading hate. They invented hate. Why else are all white supremists registered republicans?

Apology not accepted, in this case, because Sununu, Rush Limbaugh, and Romney himself all have made thinly-veiled, race-baiting statements within the last 24 hrs. They are designed to do 2 things rally and solidify Romney's doubters, bigots; and change the subject from Bain; but nobody's fooled by this, and smart people won't take the bait.

  11. Obama 2012 - MOVE Forward America, NOT another round of DUBYA's FAILURES

I guess all publicity is good, even if it's bad.
Didn't take Sununu too long to apologize for his massive gaffe earlier today. These Teapugs need to be voted out, and the SCOTUS revoke Citizens United, so we can take our country back from the highest bidder !!

Stop listening to Rush Limbaugh, Mr. Sununu, he's a radio personality and a drug addict and you should know better than to quote anything a drug addict says.

  15. Is Obama a Socialist or a Communist? The American People Have the Right to Know

But which one is he? A communist American or a socialist American? The American people want to know what his true political leanings are, not what his nationality is. Obama is hiding his true political character from the American people. So does he embrace the socialist leanings of his father?

Tactics of a desperate campaign try to get the uglyness out of people and prey on their fears. This guy is a clown but it's nice to know Mitts already throwing hail Mary's through his cronies

So, Sununu can say anything as long as he apologizes? It is because he eats babies for breakfast. Oh, sorry if some people got the wrong impression of J.S. from my comment.

Republicans lie, then offer fake apologies. Perhaps they should just keep quite until they decide to join the grown-ups.

I guess most understand what is going on here. Challenging Obama’s Patriotism is ongoing and an inference that he is not one of us to excite the base.

It seems like it will never end..

I saw Wolfe's interview, and what is not mentioned here is the Fox news interview Mr. Blitzer played of
Sununu's words. I don't go near Fox and would not have known, but he said Obama doesn't understand
America "because he spent his early years in Hawaii smoking something and a few years in Indonesia".
He offered Wolfe no apology for those words either, in fact, he ignored his question. If he thinks his lame
excuse for his "learn how to be an American" is an apology, he is sadly mistaken.
I hope Romney is proud of his "senior adviser" Sununu. This hateful person is speaking for the campaign,
but MItt is too weak to 'man up' and denounce this talk.
Romney is the one who needs to apologize, and he needs to grow up, take responsibility for his
own tax filings, and quit relying on all of these old re-treads like McCain and Sununu to speak for him.
Instead he whines and complains, criticizes and offers nothing. He's like a kid that sticks his tongue out at somebody, then runs and hides. Nope, he is definitely not ready for the White House.
