Americans view Romney's campaign more unfavorably than Obama's

(CNN) – After weeks of scathing back-and-forth between President Barack Obama and his Republican challenger Mitt Romney, a plurality of the American public views the incumbent Democrat as running a more favorable campaign, according to a poll released Wednesday.

The Washington Post/ABC News poll indicated 46% of Americans viewed Obama's campaign favorably, compared to only 38% who viewed Romney's. On the flip side, 45% viewed Obama's effort as unfavorably and 49% said they had an unfavorable impression of Romney's campaign.

Perhaps more surprising: nearly one-in-four self-identified Republicans viewed Romney's campaign unfavorably, compared to 18% of Democrats who felt the same about Obama's effort.

Similarly, 31% of conservative Republicans said they felt strongly favorable toward Romney's campaign, compared to 51% of liberal Democrats who felt the same about Obama's campaign.

The poll comes as attacks have turned increasingly negative between Romney, who clinched the GOP nomination in May, and Obama. Democrats have seized upon reports that Romney remained CEO of Bain Capital after 1999, the year he has repeatedly said he left the privatge equity company to head the Salt Lake City Olympics. At the heart of the debate are companies that were acquired by Bain and then outsourced jobs to counties with low labor costs.

Democrats, as well as some Republicans, have also hit Romney for not release more of his personal income tax returns. Romney, who has released his return from 2010 and an estimate of 2011 (Romney says he'll release the 2011 returns when they are complete), says he's disclosed more than enough.

Romney's team, meanwhile, has been under pressure from some Republicans to ramp up their hits on Obama. An ad released over the weekend criticized the president for his negative attacks, saying they fly in the face of his 2008 campaign promise of "hope and change." Romney's team also launched an attack blasting Obama for funneling federal funds to companies whose owners had contributed to his campaign coffers.

The ABC News/Washington Post poll was taken by telephone from 1,015 adults between July 11-15. The sampling error was plus or minus 3.5 percentage points.

Well THAT'S never happened before eh Flip? Are you serious? I'd love to be a fly on the wall if, G#d forbid Flip wins when Addelson, the Koch Brothers and the others pay a visit to the oval office to collect their rewards for buying Flippy's election

Robmey started this. President Obama is only fighting back. Robmey decimated Gingrich and Santorum in the primaries and he never let up on bashing President Obama. Unfortunately this is politics.

    OBAMA 2012!

  4. Greg are a liar and have something to hide. You will not release your tax returns, had nothing to do with Bain after 1999, but your name is on SEC records in 2002, retroactively retired, said you did not attend meetings at Bain after 1999 but did attend meetings for Lifelike a Bain company, profitted 500k from Damon Labs a Bain holding found to have committed Medicare Fraud and while you were Governor partnered with a firm that outsourced Mass Goverment jobs to India, just like you had a company doing your lawn work that had illegals working for you.

I wish this was all not true, but it is and anyone with half a brain can get the picture. You are not what we need running this country.

Facts are Facts......release your taxes like your dad did.

Otherwise, its more of the same. Covering up your dirty are a greedy dude!

Obama has Romney in a box and is hitting nails into the box. It's gotten to the point that the whole conservative media machine is starting to throw the kitchen sink calling the president un-american etc. Romney has boxed himself in by saying he'll not be releasing more tax returns. People are begining to ask if he has something to hide. Some say that it may be offshore accts etc. I think it's more likely some years may show he didn't pay taxes on the millions in income that he's earned. I applaud Romney for having been a successful businessman, what I want to know is have he kept his obligations to the country that has made him incredibly wealthy. Has he paid all of his taxes to the country that has made his wealthy? The Republicans should be ashamed for having fallen for Romney's supposed businessman veneer. What an embarrassment.

    Sadly, Mitt lies constantly.

Romney's arrogant refusal to disclose his tax returns shows what kind of Bain president he was & would be....unfavorable

This shows the effect of having a liberally biased media that does not do straight reporting on the most corrupt and incompetent regime in our history. First the liberal democrats dumb down America using their willing cohorts the NEA and then the product of that dumbing down gets control of the media. The democrat liberal plan for corrupting this country is working.

It has become very hard to have a positive campaign. That is really a shame. If it didn't take so much money to run a campaign, we could have more honest people running for office.

  10. Republicans - "The Not Intended to Be Factually Accurate" Party

Mitt Romney is not trustworthy. He is car salesman slimy.

He is a "do as I say, not as I do" type of guy that thinks he is smarter and better than everyone else. He wants to make decisions behind closed doors after he is elected – – like the Wisconsin governor did. He thinks his wife his prettier than everyone elses. He thinks his kids are above serving their country while he would send other`s kids to DIE in party`s NEEDLESS wars [He still favors wars in Iraq & Afghanistan . . . and can`t wait to start one with Iran]. Mitt Romney is convinced that the rest of us are ENVIOUS of him. Those are HIS WORDS.

America do not elect this shell of a man to the highest office in the land. The world will laugh at us if we trade an Obama for a Romney. They will call us fools and they`d be right.

Romney has demonstrated that he just CAN NOT be trusted.

"Democrats have seized upon reports that Romney remained CEO of Bain Capital after 1999, the year he has repeatedly said he left the privatge equity company to head the Salt Lake City Olympics."
An assertion that contradicts Romney's own testimony before the Mass. Election Board as he tried to assert his residency status in Mass. so that he could run for Governer. He testified that he attended board meetings, etc. His signature appears on nearly 150 major contracts and SEC filings. Then, he apparently retired retroactively.

Romney's campaign smacks of desperation. The only thing Romney hasn't called Obama is awhite man. i think it shows a real lack of character. Thie GOP win at any cost just doesn't sit well. Between the union busting, the credit debacle they caused , the re districting and voter suppression...honestly, it seems like they've lost their ability to see what America is anymore. It's about win, win, win, no matter who else loses.

What a meaningful poll. Just like all polls before it, every American reads the question as "Do you like Romney or Obama more?" We are fully divided, and it wouldn't matter if the question was about the candidates' hair, smile, athletic ability, or favorite color. We are all entrenched, American against American, just the way Obama dreamed it to be.

For the record, the real question is not even a close one. Obama's campaign has been called out by his own supporters as egregiously misleading and inappropriate, while Romney's has just been flat out weak. Say what you will about weak politics, but Obama has been by far the least American.

I was going to vote for Romney but not any more. He has shown not to be transparent with his tax returnes and therefore i worry what he would hide in the Whitehouse. This is not going to go away it will only get worse for Romney. The average return for a canadate is 8 to 10 years. How can he be trusted on any issue ?
